Lucas was thankful that she had just taken his comment and let it go. Merlin, he was awful at this. He wasn’t surprised of course. It wasn’t like his family had been all that keen on him spending time with muggles before this. The blond rolled his eyes at her comment. “I didn’t mean to do it alone , or in your apartment.” He said as if she were being utterly ridiculous. “You need to get more imaginative.”

“Oh I apologise, I couldn’t hear you properly over the queue of suitors I have lining up to court me and offering to buy a simple girl a drink.” She exaggerated holding her arm out to the air as if there were an actual queue before mimicking binoculars and searching for the non existant people. “My imagination is perfectly fine thank you very much. I like my own company, it means I don’t have to put up with annoying pests.”

Lucas blinked, remembering the words he had just spoken, but even then it took him a short while to pinpoint exactly what he had said wrong. Merlin. Of course, she wouldn’t know who that was. “Oh – it’s a family thing.” He attempted to explain, a hand coming to the back of his head and giving her a wide smile. Back to the conversation hand, Lucas shrugged. “I suppose there’s that.” He agreed. “Don’t you want to enjoy the night drunk yourself?” He suggested with a small smirk.

“Sure”. She dragged out as Wren stared at him weirdly and let his comment slide rather than pressing him further, it wasn’t like this was the first time she’d noticed his weird behaviour.  “Oh yeah, wait a second while I sit here on my own drinking, or better yet in my apartment staring at wall with just the bottle for company. So much fun. What on earth was I thinking? Why did I not think of doing that sooner?” She rolled her eyes as her tone dripped with sarcasm. 

“Oh Merlin, then I feel even worse for you.” He joked, not even realising his slip up before continuing. “Having to watch everyone making out all night. What a view.”

“I’m sorry what?” Surely she had misheard him? The blonde stared at him as if he had sprouted another head. “I, uh-- no. I mean, why feel sorry if I volunteered? Better tips, everyone getting drunk or in a rush to get home.” Wren gave a one shouldered shrug.

“Laugh all you want, at least I’m not working.” Lucas said from the other side of the bar. 

“Oh, you’re mistaken.” Wren grinned from her place behind the bar as if she held all the secrets in the world. “I chose to work. In fact, I volunteered for this shift.” Her shoulder went up in a one sided shrug. 

“I think it is.” He said, with a very sure smile gracing his lips. Lucas pressed his lips together to hold back the laughter that was attempting to fill the space between them. It shouldn’t have been that funny, but the persona she had adopted for even those few moments was directly opposed to anything he had witnessed from her in their previous conversations. “Actually, it might as well be the weight of the world.” He said, tugging on the bag that was hung on his shoulders. “But really, I could just use your kind smile and a set of ears to listen to all my never-ending problems.” He said, exaggerating but knowing that the blonde would certainly regret adopting this persona should he actually start boring her with his problems. “You look just the type.” 

Wren sucked in her lip, biting down and breathed out through her nose to help contain her annoyance. After composing her self she turned back towards him with another exaggerated smile as she leaned against the back wall, careful not to knock any of the bottles. “No, please, do continue. I want to know everything. Like you said, it’s not like I’ve got anything else better to do with my time.”

“This,” he began, “is pleasant conversation.” He said, raising a brow as a small smirk found its way to his lips. “And that,” he gestured to behind him where there were still no customers, “is plenty of time.” A light chuckle passed through his lips, cut short by her suggestion to call over some Jenn. “No, no – that’s quite alright.” He straightened up. “I don’t think she’d be very happy with you offering up her services. Besides, you’re much more entertaining.”

“Is it though? I don’t think it is..” She disagreed with a shrug of her shoulders as she raised a brow staring at him. Wren glanced behind him biting the inside of her cheek to hold back her retort and instead chose to glare at him as her eyes narrowed. “Fine. What is it that I can do for you Sir? How’s your day going, you look like you’ve got the weight of the world on your shoulders.” You could hear the exaggerated sweetness dripping from her tone as a fake smile pulled at her lips. She pulled her dish cloth of her shoulder and wiped down the already clean bar, as if she was impersonating the bar tender therapist you would see on a film.

Lucas looked behind him to see absolutely zero people in the line. “Yeah, my bad, it’s a really busy shift for you.” With that, he leaned on the counter. “I thought you’d like a little company – entertaining customers has to fall in your job description, right?” 

Wren internally groaned at the sight of him, really hoping that she had seen the last of him, yet clearly that wasn’t the case. “It really is. So much that I really haven’t got time for-- well whatever this is.” She emphasised her point by waving her hand between them. “Nope, my job is to get through the rest of this shift and get the hell out of dodge. If that’s the service you’re after then, I’m sure Jenn will be happy to entertain you.” The blonde acted as if she were about to call her fellow bartender over.
