Wicker Patio Furniture For Barbie: Loveseat, Chair, Table

Where do these wicker chairs come from? Like, almost everyone has had doll furniture like this as part of their collection, yet I don’t know if anyone has bought them brand-new. It’s always second-hand, hand-me-downs. They’re more like a hand-crafted thing than something packaged for a store.

My sister played with her set in the 1980s, but her half-sister might’ve played with them in the 1970s. I’ve been sent thrifted chairs like these, too. I might’ve seen a few painted white, but they are almost always that natural wicker.

Does anyone know the origin?

I don’t know for sure, but I kinda suspect it’s one of those companies that makes furniture for teddy bears.

That said, every time I see all set of those wicker chairs I am overcome with vague feelings of guilt from ruining my mom’s set of those doll chairs when I was a kid, mainly from playing too roughly with them combined with my general clumsiness. That set was from the 1960’s.

I have this same set wow! I got it in a trade from a friend but mine was stained with a dark varnish and I’ve painted it with white chalk paint to counteract it

I've had two of these, from my grandmother hoarding all the family barbies from the 60s and 70s. There was also at least one of the peacock chairs from the same material

Latest goodwill outlet doll haul. I'm excited about the Moana doll, though her joints are a little stiff I grabbed about half the Frozen furniture, leaving the icicle themed stuff. I'm really excited about that side Chair, it looks just like a chair I'd find in a real house. The dented steel barrel is a cool prop I'll probably paint and use The Chelsea doll is the only I've seen that's articulated lime that. Her limbs are loose as fuck though. Plus a 50s baby doll and some random odds and ends

(tangential advice: save that cut-off neck plug–it might just be the right size to put on some other doll’s neck peg to bulk it up enough to fit some other head. boiling-to-soften might be required. yes, i have saved several off-cut cut-neck Ken neck knobs, although I honestly can’t remember if i’ve used them–but, if i need ‘em, they’ll be there…)

Sorry for the delay getting this out, I got sick and it put me a little behind.

Here is the tutorial for converting the unarticulated Fashionistas to articulated ones.

For these photos I used a movie Wonder Woman doll’s forearms and calves. I find those work best proportionally with the slim Kens.

For curvy Barbies, the movie Wonder Woman dolls as well as the DC Super Hero Girls dolls both work well. The method for converting the curvy girls is the same as what I explain here.

Just be sure to take your time and be patient and the joins will look nice.

The rotary tool I use is Wen brand, I got it along with the extender and extra accessories off Amazon for about $35 USD. I have had it for about a year and it was well worth the investment.

Also, be sure to wear protective gear when creating small dust particles. I use a respirator, but any face mask should do. I also wear glasses to protect my eyes, you just can’t be too careful!

If you ever find yourself in the plumbing department, you might consider picking up some thread seal tape (a tip I got from the old action figure forums)–it’s very good for wrapping pegs that are a bit small, and you can have better control over the thickness of the wrapped peg, because the thread seal tape is so thin that you can build it up if needed. It also usually has PTFE (Teflon) in it, so it will move smoothly when inserted ^_^

Question #1: Any tips on low-tech alternatives to the rotary tool? I’d probably use a traditional gouge to hollow the parts out, and I’m sure it would work more or less, but if someone has tried it and has any tips I’d love to hear them.

Question #2: I’ve seen plumbers/teflon tape in several colors, but does anyone know if there’s a transparent version?

For vinyl carving alternatives an etching tool set for carving out wool and limo is pretty useful to getting concave shapes that a regular set of blades can’t do.
