          ❝ thanks, monkey, ❞ dan smiles softly as he kneels down in front of his daughter, his fingers gently taking hold of her chin in a display of affection. ❝ how about we get some chocolate cake, hm? just don’t tell mommy, okay? ❞ he offers up a wink before embracing the little one with a never-ending smile. ❝ you’re my favourite kid -- you know that, right? ❞ he then jokes, ruffling her hair.

          dan immediately reacts, scooping his daughter out of the air so that he can tug her into a hug. ❝ hey, monkey, ❞ he grins then places a kiss to the side of her head. ❝ — it’s father’s day? no way, i completely forgot! ❞ he didn’t. he just likes to big up the occasions that trixie is excited about. seeing her happy makes him extremely happy, and well... he gets a card, so that’s always great. taking it from her, he opens it carefully and reads the message inside, his heart swelling ten times bigger as he does. ❝ i love it -- i love you, kiddo, ❞ he says while hugging her again. ❝ it is? that’s awesome, i could eat a horse i’m that hungry. ❞

          for a moment, dan isn’t sure what to say. he’s had his own fair share of battling demons - metaphorical, of course - and he’s fairly certain he failed to keep them at bay. not after everything. ❝ honestly, man? i dunno. i’m not the best guy to ask about this. ❞ his own marriage crashed and burned due to the consequences of his own choices, he almost destroyed a case, and half the time he doesn’t even know which direction to walk in without feeling he’s going to mess up somehow. ❝ i guess you just have to look at what you have and question whether or not you’re willing to risk losing it. ❞ he didn’t think it through, and he lost because of it. it’s a thing that will haunt him for the rest of his days.

          ❝ beatrice, ❞ dan gives his daughter a look as arms fold across his chest. this -- this has to be maze’s influence and, quite honestly, he doesn’t like the direction that this could take. ❝ remember that talk we had when you were little? remember how your mom and i sat you down and talked about the dangers of this kind of stuff? that still applies to now. no knife collections in the house, okay? or anywhere, as a matter of fact. ❞

          ❝ if you don’t want someone to play games with you don’t act like the world is one big freakin’ game, then, ❞ dan points out, not even bothering to look in lucifer’s general direction. he’s attempting to focus and his companion for the day is not helping one bit. the sooner this statement is taken the sooner dan can pawn lucifer off to someone else... in theory. the damn bastard has a way of sticking around where his presence isn’t exactly required. ❝ i’m capable of a lot of things -- not that i need to prove that to you. ❞

          ❝ --- that doesn’t surprise me, ❞ dan responds, offhandedly. he's firmly annoyed with lucifer’s constant desire to be at the forefront and origin point of every decision ever made, yet he doesn’t voice it. it would fall upon self involved ears if he did. ❝ can we get back to the case now? or do you want to monologue how this is your fault, too? ❞
