βWe hope you could make it!β read the invitation.
It arrived three weeks ago in a brightly colored envelope, decorated with hand-drawn stars and crooked smiley faces. In oversized letters, the front of the card declared βCareer Day Heroes!β Inside was a cheerful request from a local elementary school asking if Dr. Rebecca Chambers would come and speak to the students about being a scientist.
She had confirmed her attendance on the spot, with absolutely zero hesitation about squeezing the visit into her already jam-packed calendar.
βYou know, you can always send in a replacement,β Billy pointed out, a mug in his hand. βJust saying.β He lifted his free hand in playful surrender.
βAnd miss out on meeting future scientists? No way,β Rebecca said as she dropped an imposing stack of papers onto the table.
Billy smiled into his coffee. βGot plans for the questions they might throw ya?β He had declined to participate every time she brought up the program, calling it βa disaster waiting to happenβ.
βI do,β she told him curtly, taking a piece of paper from 3 separate piles and clipping them together. βIβm preparing handouts. These should be enough toβ¦ steer their curiosity.β
No matter what Rebecca did to prepare for it, he still thought the whole thing was a horrible idea. Not because he doubted her abilities, but because children were (in his mind) such unpredictable grenades. You couldnβt handle one the same way you handled another. He wanted to be nowhere near the blast radius when they detonated. At random. There was no telling which one would go off first, or why. βGotta love your confidence,β he finally managed, biting into a bagel.
Rebecca looked up from arranging the paper sheets, βI can work with children, Billy.β
βYou say that now.β
βThey are not bioweapons.β
He slowed his chewing and considered her statement carefully. βDebatable.β
She snorted softly before returning her attention to her supplies. Rebecca had taken every opportunity to prepare for this. There were laminated diagrams, colorful plushies of smiling human organs, a cartoon presentation about cells wearing little hard hats and βworking together as a team.β She had even packed dozens of heart-shaped stickers because she thought rewarding participation would instill confidence.
Billy watched all of that in silence. Right now, he looked like a man witnessing a fresh recruit march onto the battlefield armed with nothing but craft supplies.

to be fair... imagine having your 1st day on the job, going through multiple close calls with death, watching your coworkers die, fighting mutant leeches, zombies, a bunch of gigantic atrocities and being forced to team up with a mass murderer on the run, only to realize he's an innocent doomed by the narrative (and worst of all: he's hot).
...sounds like a rough work day if you ask me!
