cw for non-explicit mentions of inc*st, CSA, and childhood trauma
so excited to see the full game whenever that is. ghosttundra has truly encapsulated the ~girl games~ experience of playing silly flash games and listening to pop music with your codependent elementary/middle school bff who just told u about her older male relative she’s scared to be around.
lacey games, like amanda the adventurer (explored later this chapter) touches on the theme that a lot of the times things that are deemed inappropriate for kids, happens to kids. preventing kids from learning about dangerous adults doesn’t prevent them from being hurt by them. and pretending like nothing happened or could happen makes it even worse.
do you feel safe? (lacey games and amanda the adventurer)
cw for non-explicit mentions of inc*st, CSA, and childhood trauma
spoiler alert for discussion of details
im very lucky that i discovered lacey games and started following ghosttundra about a month before the lacey’s flashgames demo was announced and dropped a couple weeks later. i downloaded it from itchio and played it day 1 and rolled credits the next day. i think it was a phenomenal experience that maintains the tone and vibe of the original videos (the disturbing rabbithole of lacey games, etc) while adding more fun elements like having multipe windows open including grace (and briefly rocio(spoilers)) as a narrator.
b. chapter 1: do you feel safe? lacey games & amanda the adventurer
c. chapter 2: i saw the tv glow, we’re all going to the world’s fair and queerness / identity forming
d. chapter 3: object permanence, skinamarink, and childhood fears
introduction - i
from a time when physical media could appear or disappear (skinamarink, ben drowned) because your brain lacked object permanence & you lacked agency over your surroundings.
now, looking back, it’s hard to figure out if it was exactly how you remembered (i saw the tv glow, welcome home) because memories, too, are ephemeral and can be twisted by human trauma (channel zero s1, lacey games) or a sinister pwr beyond our control ^or comprehension (amanda the adventurer 1&2) (not in a lovecraftian way!!). when the screen showed you one thing and your imagination filled in the rest (skinamarink, we’re all going to the world’s fair).]
introduction - ii
everything’s fuzzy, except the emotions – which are more concrete. that dream/imagination/memory/creative horrible terrifying beautiful location that feels otherworldly, but also your own. where everything is big and scary, but also full of possibility.
introduction - iii
analog horror has been widespread in the indie horror space for several years now, so it was exciting to be able to see it getting wider distribution in 2024 with i saw the tv glow. which then lead me to director jane shoenbrun’s previous work we’re all going to the world’s fair.
especially as people of my generation in the late gen x / millennial / early gen z range are coming to an age where they’re contributing to the ~media zeitgeist~ our childhood terrors are, too.
in the following pages are scraps and musings about nostalgia and analog horror. the cross-section between the types of media we consumed growing up, whether it was creepy, cute, educational, etc. and our nostalgia and fears surrounding it organized by chapter topics. enjoy.

lacey games addresses the questions, “what if things that are inappropriate for kids, happens to kids?” “what if the scary fucked up stuff happened while you were surrounded by toys and games that are supposed to bring you joy?”
how can these exist in a brain, body, world?
in lacey’s diner, her trauma starts to break through when she fails at a task. when she looks in the mirror. and when she is trying to hold herself together.
everything’s fuzzy, except the emotions – which are more concrete. that dream/imagination/memory/creative horrible terrifying beautiful location that feels otherworldly, but also your own. where everything is big and scary, but also full of possibility.

both lacey and amanda use their imaginations to escape from the danger of their realities, even though the darkness starts to seep into both worlds.
lacey's world is much more grounded in reality (to an extent), whereas amanda the adventurer's ^world is based in pied piper legends and occult practices.
