Music video evaluation
The music video is performance in style. The music is upbeat even if the lyrics are not. With the official music video as an example, we made a video that was light hearted. We have achieved this by having the people in the video play music instruments and wear colourful clothing. On top of this, the editing adds a lot to the relaxed emotion. The VHS style helps add to the feel of the music video making it feel both retro and unique. We were graded a high merit.
In the peer review the split screen effect was well received. Also, people said the still camera angle helped the video keep in theme. Although, having more angles would have kept the video from becoming stale.
To improve upon this, as camera man, more angles could have been filmed in order to add variation to the video. This could have been done by moving the camera and filming from different angles or moving the camera mid-shot.
Also, the editing of the audio could have turned out better as it does not flow smoothly. In order to improve this we should have not over thought the editing. All these changes would have improved the music video and made it look more professional.Â
Research - March 7-14
I used Premier Pro to create the above video which was extremely useful in improving my skills for the FMP. As it displays a rainbow of colours within a TV. it is completely psychedelic and unusual. This will help going forward so I can do it with full film. It will create an effect which will sidetrack the view and from them off the trail.
During this product I will make use of Microphone; audition, a variety of cameras; Premier Pro, After Effects. I need these for the following reasons:
Cameras; for filming specific shots.
Microphone; top record the written word to display over the top of the visuals.
Audition; to edit the audio.
Premier Pro; to edit the film.
In the post preproduction I will user the following techniques. I'll speed up the video and the music; this will be done by using Premier Pro and Audition; this is done by altering the speed by x (times) this results in speeded up images.
I will also warp the images like above using premier pro. This is done by setting key framing and making the saturation change at break neck speeds within the key frames. This makes colours appear as the various colours are saturated and brightened in random orders.
Within after Effects I will use masking to crop out parts of an image and make them fill half the screen. Allowing me to do similar within another image but fill the bottom.

University - Unit 11
I have had an interview at University of Essex. This involved hands of use of the cameras in groups to each have a go at filming a scene in their own way. In order to do this I utilized skills which I have gained during this course. for example, I used rule of thirds to line up the frames, and because of my hands experience of cameras I had a understanding how to work things, i.e. Boom Microphones.

UCAS Personal Statement - Unit 11
I am currently studying Film & Television Level 3 at Colchester Institute. I chose to study this course as I have an interest in Film and TV and how content is made. Throughout this course I have learnt a great deal about filming, including framing scenes, lighting and blocking scenes. I have also learnt about editing using the following programmes; Premier Pro, Audacity, Photoshop and After Effects. In addition, I have had hands on experience with cameras (Sony NX 100), audio equipment (Marantz, lapel microphones) and lighting. For instance, my experience with a Sony NX 100 has helped me learn how to focus manually and white balance manually, and my experience with editing has helped me understand how to put images in images, and use special effects.
During the past two years I have created upwards of ten complete projects. This includes narrative and non-narrative pieces. These have given me a chance to learn more about a wide range of film forms, whether it is a documentary or a story.
I would like to continue my education as I feel this would allow me a greater understanding of the industry and it would allow me to improve my skills within this field.
Overall Evaluation
The idea of completing the Stranger Things project was to improve my After Effects skills, and to learn more specific effects e.g. 3D lighting.
I found a YouTube tutorial which I followed to the word.
The effect âUpside Downâ is used in Stranger Things, I have watched clips and read about the making of Stranger things to influence my creation, this meant I knew exactly how well replicated my project is, in comparison to the original.
It was entirely done in After Effects using footage and images from the tutorial. Specifically in After Effects, I had to create a lot of sub sequences; I also learnt how 3D effects work and how they interact with the environment. On top of this I learnt a whole lot more about masking and tracking this is how the walls look different and the lights are more perpetuated, this was done with a 3D effect light aligned with the natural light.
This has greatly improved my skills within After Effects. I think my edit conveys and eerie, uneasy atmosphere which has the desired effect in unsettling the audience. Putting the audience on edge will leave them fearful of what could be at the end of the corridor.
Iâm pleased with how the project turned out as it looks realistic within the Stranger Things canon; in particular I like the lighting I achieved with colour correction which really steeps the nervy environment as something could be lurking in the dark.
Another project where I learnt how to use colour correction was the Wes Anderson edit where I played around with the aforementioned colour correction and aspect ratio, to give a clip a new feeling. This was done by darkening the light in a clip and giving it a more blue hue. This gives a calming feeling.
In order to do this I studied Wes Andersonâs films and how he has a colour scheme throughout a film. Also, I read an interview with the DOP Robert Yeoman which was really useful in understanding how Anderson creates his films, where there is a lot of work in creating sets and costumes, then Yeoman give the shot a warm fuzzy feeling using dark lighting.
This project was extremely useful in giving me grounding in how to colour correct which helped me in achieving the dark Stranger Things âupside downâ effect.
My final project was a Terrence Malick style shot. This was done by pairing some footage shot in the golden hour; the golden hour is a certain time at night shortly after sunrise or before sunset. Terrence Malick himself takes a lot of shots during this time. He also utilizes voiceover a great deal which is why I found an uplifting philosophical speech, on creating and consciousness, given by David Lynch to lay over the top. This gave the shot a dreamy mystique atmosphere.
I have done a lot of research to find the best speech for the project. On top of this, I did a lot of research about Malick and his filming style. This gave me an insight of how auteurs work, as I found an interview with Christian Plummer, where he says why he wonât work with him again, even though he enjoys his work. This gave me understanding on how divisive an auteur can be.
Terrence Malick Evaluation
For the Terrence Malick project, I turned my hand to making something with voice over and footage from the golden hour, which is what Malick specialises in. I achieved this by finding footage from YouTube and I chose David Lynch for the voiceover. I found a speech he gave in consciousness and creativity; this suits the voice over and is philosophical in nature. A challenge I faced when creating this was finding relevant footage, to begin I was search for a philosophical speech in general, and then I thought a suitable candidate from the voiceover is David Lynch. So I set about finding a voiceover this is where if found the speech which ticks all the boxes. The voice over worked well with the found footage, so all that was left for some music which I had used in the past for experimental research and suited perfectly, creating a dreamy mystique atmosphere.

Problem Solving
During my creations in this unit I have encountered problems. This made me use problem solving skills, in the paragraphs writing I will reflect and evaluation on my problem solving incidents.
For example within the Stranger Things project I had to find a follow a tutorial to learn the specific After Effects skills. This vastly improved my After Effects skills, as beforehand I had no comprehension of 3D mask and motion tracking. This means going forward I will be able to implement this in my final project.
Another problem I encountered was the computer. This was because my hard drive does not work with the computer up in S block, this meant id one more planning and short sequences in this session. Although once I had an USB I could work across computers. A problem occurred when my computer crashed. After trial and error I managed to log on again and quickly exported an excerpt of the clip. In future, I will save my project more often this will mean these problems will not occur. If they do I will have a certain stage to export so I can carry on in a new project.
For some of the projects I had to find the footage to edit. This involved lots of trawling round video hosting websites in order to find the perfect clips, mainly YouTube where I found the perfect clip. In the future I will try and find a more efficient way to find footage I canât capture, for instance using a search engine so all the results involve all the video sharing platforms.
Brass Eye Evaluation
I have created an effect similar to the Brass Eye introduction using the BBC logo and Premier Pro. This allowed me to playing around with warping images. this has given me the desired effect of destabilizing the viewer and parodying the average news logo and introduction. this is similar to watch the original Brass Eye intro was doing.
This has been vital in me learning how to edit certain effect with YouTube using after effects. Although, the final product is not perfected, it could be improved via using better images. These images would not have become pixelated when zoomed and remained crystal clear.
