NBC 33 Baton Rouge - "Berwick Monster" - December 2010
"Okay, you know how we asked you to send in your pics so we can put them on our newcast? We got a few, but one viewer claims he found at a hunting camp in Berwick...last weekend, his friend's family found one of his hunting cams destroyed, but the SIM card was still there along with this crazy image..."
A famous slice of internet horror and the progenitor of a solid decade and counting of pale, long-limbed beasties in pop culture - and progenitor of the "cryptid" known as the pale crawler (oft conflated with the creepypasta creature, the Rake) - this creature first appeared on local news as a mysterious image from a destroyed trailcam.
It was speculated to be Photoshop, and as was often the case in the 2010s, was explained away as viral marketing for the Playstation game Resistance 3, even though they only kinda resemble the monster from the game - who notably have more than two eyes - and nobody stepped forward to claim it. More than likely it was a prank.
But it's a delightful time capsule - from the earnest Facebook feedback segment to the anchor talking about looking at the photo while alone at midnight, it's the local news cryptid segment at peak performance
Media insistence that something could be viral marketing actually went up as studios largely abandoned ARGs and other non-obvious viral marketing after the peak of ILoveBees, Cloverfield, and a lot more very expensive ones that got a tenth of the attention. Hence why they abandoned them. People would explain just about anything by gesturing towards some vaguely related upcoming movie or game
Anyway the peak of this was when many people sincerely believed that Cartoon Network planted a raccoon corpse on a beach to promote a new show
I followed a blog at the time that documented so many of these that were lost to time. Shadow of the Colossus had a full ARG! It was an expensive one involving multiple websites, fake news reports, and Youtube channels! It...kind of got the reception a lot of these did: some of it went viral, but many people weren't clear on what it was promoting. And the campaign itself was forgotten
ARGs dying bc on the corporate end they were run by people loathe to turn them into games or give players any way to interact and on the indie end bc everyone just started doing binary puzzles over plotless spooky videos and in the everything end by people getting less comfortable missing fiction and reality as society started being dominated by people who use the same clue-hunting techniques to declare they've found secret codewords proving they eat babies under Comet Ping Pong
(and then they survive but now people use "ARG" to mean "a webseries with mysteries to solve" instead of a game with interactivity and formal puzzles)
ARG-centric forums and especially Youtube channels went through a version of the Mythbusters problem - where a work entirely about a specific type of content runs out of content to cover, because that genre basically died while they were making it. Mythbusters ran out of existing urban legends to test a couple seasons in, at about the same time popular culture stopped producing new iconic, I heard-it-from-a-friend-of-a-friend "urban legends", with much of the impulse that leads to things like urban legends being invested in open fiction like creepypasta. Thus, they pivot to covering movie stunts and physics puzzles
For ARG coverage, as the Slendersmen dried up, they had two options: one was to pivot to covering more traditional horror media. The other was to stay the course and wait ages between uploads, and often lavish attention on anything half-popular that comes out, doing tens of hours of video no matter if there's much of anything to unpack. But this was an illusion of choice, because either path leads inevitably to making a video about House of Leaves
Another classic hoax of the era was the Mini Cooper transformer
It wasn't promoting Transformers. It was promoting Mini Cooper, by dint of an involved lore-filled ARG about an inventor converting a Mini Cooper into a robot? There were dozens of videos? From comments on coverage of this, it had extensive magazine coverage, some of it kayfabe? They made merch? All that appears to be left of it are a handful of reuploads? It probably didn't help sell a single Mini Cooper? Do sprawling puzzles solved by nerds online not help sell cars?
You can also tell this was a failure as an ad bc I remembered the ARG but not what car it was for; I kept looking up "Volkswagen ARG 2000s" and finding nothing. I really filtered through every European car company I could think of but not Mini

i think the elon musk nazi salute thing will always be this little "2020s in a nutshell" moment for me. the adl taking the time off their busy schedule of noting every instance of someone saying "free palestine" as an antisemitic hatecrime to swoop in and reassure everyone that was definitely not a nazi salute as mr "judeobolshevik shadow elites are transing our children to advance white genocide? interesting. looking into it" would never
This made me laugh out loud

when i saw the bird clip for the first time, my boss at starbucks showed it to me specifically because the top comment on the youtube video at the time was "did he died?" and i still say it 10 years later

not only are most people completely unaware of the devastation of indigenous languages in the americas, most people are completely unaware of the devastation of indigenous languages in europe. never mind occitan, they don't know about basque! it's wild! bleak! existentially horrifying!!!
the last few centuries of french history involved, amongst other things, a concerted effort to establish "french" as a legitimate country and cultural identity, and crucially as a language, which sounds like an absurd statement if you know nothing about the languages of france. french is a language, yes; it exists and existed in the late eighteenth century. but it was limited primarily to the north of france and was certainly not spoken or even understood across the country. other languages within france were banned and french was enforced following the french revolution and even to this day other languages indigenous to france have very little legal protection and are not recognised as official languages.
that's just one country in europe. one. and many people straight up have no idea about any of this!
did you know france has celtic languages? breton is the only celtic language spoken outside of the british isles. did you know france has germanic languages? alsatian, for example, is spoken in the east of france, unsurprisingly in alsace. it's not even the only french germanic language. did you know france has a number of languages and dialects known as langues d'oïl closely related to french? norman and picard, for example, are spoken in the north of france. did you know that france has gallo-romance languages? franco-provençal (which has a number of dialects) is spoken in the east of france, as well as parts of switzerland and italy. did you know that france has a language most closely related to catalan, the langues d'oc? occitan is spoken in the south of france and has a rich literary history. did you know france is home to basque, or rather euskara, a language isolate which predates indo-european languages? romani dialects! corsican! so much more than just french! there are even extinct jewish dialects of occitan! extinct langues d'oïl like angevin! so much linguistic diversity and all anyone talks about is french.

adopting a guardian angel from the shelter but theyre untrained and undersocialized so i have to chain them up in the yard during the day to keep them from tearing up the furniture and they try to smite anybody who comes too close to the house
"yeah, this one came to us a few weeks back after someone found it on their roof with its leg caught in their christmas decorations. decembers our busiest time of year. not for the reason you think; the bright lights just get them confused. some breeds migrate off earth for decades, even centuries, at a time but their memory is nearly as impressive as their lifespan, so they try to return to their old nesting grounds and, well.
we had a principality last year that was estimated at at least six hundred years old, but thats pretty rare. mostly its run-of-the-mill guardians. which is a good thing, dont get me wrong. theyre still considered 'exotics' under the responsible angel ownership act but their care needs are a lot less specialized.
its got all its shots already but youll want to take it to go ahead and get it chipped along with a full physical. what? oh, no, theres no sex, not that we can figure out anyway, but theyll answer to anything you call them. saves you the trouble of having to get it 'fixed' at least, but if you want my advice, you dont want to keep multiples of the same breed in the same house anyway. not as a first time owner anyway. they can get awfully territorial.
lonely? i wouldnt put it that way. these rescues are usually happy enough just to have an entire house to themselves without having to fight for food or shelter. boredom can be an issue though. guardians are a working breed; as the saying goes, if you dont give them a job theyll find one, and that job will be disassembling your furniture and smiting pigeons off your roof. i have some pamphlets here for some local obedience training courses. i strongly recommend you take one.
oh yeah youve got yourself a chatty one here huh? careful what you say around this one, theyre talented mimics. by the way, if youre really worried about socialization you could always try joining a church. or like, a synagogue or something. i dont mean to assume. im not religious myself."
The note inside a bullet.
B-17 bomber is riddled with German anti-aircraft fire but miraculously survives. Later they discover the explosive shells were all inert; sabotaged by Nazi slaves working in armament factories.
Inside one empty shell is a written note: it's all we can do for you now.
The most important part of all this is that these small acts of bravery and noncompliance cannot be known as long as the enemy still stands, and might never be known. Just because it doesn’t seem like anyone is doing anything doesn’t mean it’s true. The best malicious compliance or subtle sabotage is the one that’s never detected, but makes ravages nonetheless.

"there comes a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part. You can't even passively take part. And you've got to throw your bodies upon the wheels and upon the gears. Upon the levers. Upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop!"
~Mario Savio
We're watching clips on cheetahs, and Mr. CBC made a good point that there's a Black South African talking about the cheetahs, and how we never get to see that. And it made me wonder... Yeah, actually. We almost never get to see all the African conservationists and animal caregivers that put in all the work with the big cats and animals in these Savanna documentaries. They're usually just narrated by some British person.
OKAY, SO, bad news on the privacy front, these two dipshit senators are trying to advance the Stop CSAM Act in the must-pass NDAA bill, and they're seemingly doing it right under our noses.
Which, stopping pedos sounds good, but this bill will not do that.
The EFF has more on it, but the long and short is what it will do is basically outlaw encryption as inherently suspect by way of people being potentially liable if anyone could do anything with it, and it carves out Section 230 to do so.
Which, if you don't know, means that websites are gonna massively overcorrect and ban basically anything that could set it off, and if you don't think that's a big deal, remember that the last time that happened was FOSTA-SESTA, which kicked off the censorship wave that fucked over a lot of sites including Tumblr, and also didn't do dick for its stated purpose of stopping sex trafficking.
It's currently in the Senate Judiciary Committee, so if you see any of your state's Senators in the list of members, CALL THEM ASAP, and even if they aren't, call your senators and especially your House reps and tell them you do not want this censorship law rammed into a must-pass bill without public debate.
If you don't know who they are, you can find your senators and house reps here, and CALL THEM ASAP, they snuck this in quickly and under the radar and we don't have a lot of time, and even if you're not in the US please boost this message, not just to Tumblr but to other platforms, a lot of sites you use every day are based in the US so this will affect you too!

Cursed post
It’s finally happened.
After almost a decade on this site, I found another Tumblr user in the wild. I stopped to tie my shoe with rainbow laces this morning outside the silversmith at Colonial Williamsburg, and I heard it.
“I like your shoelaces.”
Oh. Oh no.
I responded the only way I could. “Thanks.” And then I reluctantly added, “I stole them from the president…and if that makes sense to you, I’m very sorry.”
The poor man, in full Colonial dress, stared at me for a long moment. And then burst into laughter. And said, “I haven’t thought about that in YEARS and this has never happened to me before.”
Yeah. Me neither. Not until today.
Tumblr rite of passage. Achievement unlocked.
@victoriansecret I found your friend!!!
