if all of this were to work out

After all the waiting, life will finally soften.

What you asked for, will be granted.

And perhaps, in finally receiving it all, you will become complacent.

And maybe worst of all, ungrateful.

And maybe comfort will arrive so quietly that you will begin to mistake it for entitlement.

You will wake up inside answered prayers and call them ordinary.

What once felt impossible

slowly becomes expected.

You will forget the weight of the prayers that once bent your back.

And you lose sight of the nights you pleaded for relief from things nobody else could see.

You become oblivious to how desperately you once wanted the life that now sits quietly in your hands

And that is perhaps the strangest tragedy of the human heart:

not that it suffers,

but that it adapts even to miracles.

So if that day ever comes, or has come

if your hands finally hold what they once trembled asking for,

return, at least for a moment,remembering the distance between the prayer and its answer.
