God, and Dean has SUCH an interesting choice of words for Jody in the next scene.
DEAN: Nice ambush in there.
It read almost.. subtly disapproving, doesn't it?
And Jody GETS. PRICKLY. ABOUT IT.
Because she knows it went badly, she knows it isn't a good look, but she doesn't know WHY it crashed and burned so badly. She's, after all, TRYING. She can't put into words.
JODY: Hey, you crashed my pad first.
DEAN: Well, you know, I thought we were going to be helping you with monsters, not birth control.
JODY: Welcome to my world.
Dean is doing a disciplined thing here. He refused to engage on two accounts. It was inappropriate AND he's saying, "Hey, you blindsided us." When he hears "Welcome to my world," he sees it for what it is: a real cry for help. That was a bad show of parenting, but it's also an expression of overwhelm.
"I love those girls, but I am hanging on by my fingertips."
Then, he listens. Because Jody loves the girls and she's overwhelmed. He knows that. I mean, her kid is holding swords to the throats of innocent civilians! She's worried about teen pregnancy, because that would mean another thing to take care of! She's a full-time working sheriff AND a hunter AND a parent of hunters-in-training, or at least of girls who are entangled in supernatural trauma and the supernatural world!
She opens up about how it's not easy. The guy who got a swords held to his throat is pressing charges, and holding him off is risking her job. It's a fine line of how all those elements overlap.
She ALSO laments that she feels like she's supposed to teach them "mom stuff," and she doesn't know how. It's awkward and uncomfortable, and she really put her foot in it. KEEPS putting her foot in it.
JODY (lamenting): "Yeah, but I'm not Alex's mom. I'm not Claire's mom, I didn't raise them, I don't have that kind of history with them."
Dean starts out saying, Sam and I would have benefited from someone like you, Jody. But what does Dean say to THIS expression from Jody?
DEAN: Well we can talk to Claire. And we'll get her to settle down.
He also says, "I'll get Sam to talk to her, he's better with the whole talky thing anyway," but I think he's doing something a little interesting too. When he hears about Claire's obsession with HUNTING. It's a direct response to this:
JODY: Yeah… she started college, but she hasn't been to classes for weeks. She doesn't have any friends. She spends all her time trolling for cases, and reading lore.
DEAN: Sounds kinda creepy when you put it like that.
JODY: You know I've got nothing against hunting. But if she's hiding in it, because she doesn't have anything else? I'm just - worried about her being so alone.
Add that's... not actually a bad read on Sam and Claire??? And Jody's read of Claire is devastatingly on, even if she puts her foot in it when interacting with her.
re: Sam and Claire: They're WAY more alike than they appear. Especially with regards to obsession and lore. Claire is fiercely independent and lone wolf-ey and even turns onto revenge in a very John-and-Sam way when Kaia is killed. There ARE things about her molten core that resonate with SAM and CAS, despite her personality being Dean-like.
It's a bit like how MARY is very Dean-like in aura and personality, but how she MOVES through the world and her career are so SO Sam in a way that delights Sam tremendously in season 12 "Knew you couldn't stay away. [from hunting]."
