Are they pseudo human or something?

I'm not the author, so I can't tell you a specific answer as to "why" without delving into fan theory/headcanon territory. I'm only following the species guide and original comic, if that helps.

Also, fun fact, but I had a really hard time drawing all of Owner's eight nipples, so much so that I kept thinking it looked like a pizza with too much pepperoni. Inwardly, I thought, "that's enough slices !!"
