“Everyone is broken,” he says, his voice in a different place than our bodies. “They just like to pretend they’re not.” I watch as his brown eyes tear at mine. “It’s like a mask that no one is willing to take off.”
Excerpt from a book I will never write #845 (via excerptsofstories)
he was the only one who she would allow to taunt him with minimal repercussions. that hadn’t always been the case, but his constant grinding on her nerves had worn her down over time. if it had been anyone else, their persistent pestering would have resulted in an inevitable act of violence. in sid’s case, it riled her up but in a completely different way. he could be her antagonist and as a result unexpectedly transform it into a way to arouse her. “how’d you assume that one?” noelle teased him with a raised brow. she bit her lip to keep an amused giggle from passing through her lips. “you know that i’m not an easy catch,” she told him, her voice could only be described as savory as noelle glanced at him through hooded lashes. she watched him closely, his words awakening memories that she had tightly been gripping onto for the past few days. they caused a warmth within her that she was unused to but still eagerly accepted. “i had to make the first move because i’m the one with the balls here.” she angled herself carefully, now facing sidney as she balanced herself on her knees and calves. noelle’s movements were deliberate and quick as her head angled to remove the space between them. there was a fire blazing in her eyes while her head tilted and her lips hovered directly over sid’s. sparks of pure electricity crackled between them but she seemed steadfast now. she wouldn’t be making the next move.
the truth behind her words could not have been spoken better, or in a more deliberate way other than directly from the woman in question, herself. sid knew this first hand from nearly a year of compiled experience with said action. catching noelle was like catching wind in a bottle. once you thought you had her, there she went. leaving behind zero trace of her existence, only the reverberating sound following her presence on your life. but he was beginning to feel like that could only be said for a while longer, as her resistance was visibly wavering. noting the intake of plump, pink flesh between her lips left sid reeling with desire. ❛ i’ve got what it take, you see. the only son of a bitch capable of taking what you dish out -- who still wants to end the day knowing you’re gonna be around when i wake up. ❜ he admitted easily, enjoying that there were no boundaries between them anymore. he could say what he wanted, when he wanted. he chuckled heartily at her comment, not daring to deny what she said to be true. instead he kept silent, only throwing her a wayward glance, shrugging his shoulder in acceptance of her playfully harsh blow. feeling her move across the mattress into a kneeling position brought many memories of the night before back to the forefront of his mind. as did the way she leaned in, careful but with purpose as her lips found his for a second time that week. but it was his turn to pursue her actions and he let his body turn, making their arrangement more comfortable as he let the kiss proceed. lips dancing together with ease, sid’s hand moved to rest atop her thigh with a gentle touch.
If he had told her that a few days ago, she would’ve definitely punched him in the face. But right now, she was trying to change things between them. She couldn’t keep dwelling in the past, hating him for something that happened such a long time ago and in another life. They got a second chance, maybe not to fix their relationship but to create a new friendship. “You’re an idiot.” She said simply before swimming closer to him. She dove in before coming out, running a hand through her wet hair. “Fine. It’s not that bad, but it’s still freezing. You should be enjoying it too.” She smirked before pushing him off of the inflatable mattress and into the water.
he should have know it was coming -- the inevitability of his body reuniting with the freezing pond below his inflatable sanctuary was too plain to see. sid could chalk it up to revenge ( one act on a long list she carried around with her for being a knob-head ) but he knew she wasn’t the type. it was all in good fun, but it didn’t help him physically withstand the feeling as he spiraled into the water beside her. but instead of resurfacing right away, he remained beneath the surface. gingerly calculating the distance between the two of them long enough to give her reason to spark interest. after a few more seconds, sid swam forward, encasing her ankle in his hand.
she hadn’t intended for any of the past five minutes of their encounter to occur. noelle had felt nothing more than a blinding fury towards sid for the past week. every time she had saw his familiar figure nearby, she would either cast him a stare seething with detest or make sure to steer clear from the unmanageable haired boy. if she had gotten close enough to him, her hands surely would have wrung themselves around his neck and no one in the runaways wanted to handle the situation. noelle couldn’t even stomach the thought of allowing him to come close enough to meet his gaze…at least that had been the case only moments before he had ventured over to her. the courageous act of pouring his hear out into a jumble of words was considered enough to be a game changer. she only had mere moments to reconsider the prior event from the point of view he had fearlessly spoken to her. “yes, dumbass. you are forgiven,” she spat at him, but this time there was no hint of anger or crimson in her voice. instead, there was a playful light dancing in her eyes as bantered with her dear companion. “we have a whole seven days to catch up. seven days is a fuckin’ long time to be without my sid,” she told him gently, the words hesitantly passing by her lips as she was unsure of how he would choose to interpret them. noelle’s doe eye stared met sid’s eyes and a genuine smile was caused by the simple action of locking eyes with the janko boy. “what the hell? are you saying that…” her mouth fell agape as she processed the words he had just spoke. “you wanted to kiss me?” the soft pink returned to cover the bridge of her nose and cheeks as her mind opened to alternatives she had never thought to consider before.
a breathy sigh was forced from his mouth as his body begun to settle back into a state of relief, accompanied by a collection of other emotions. even in the apocalypse, apologies mattered more to people than could be expressed with words -- you had to be sincere and genuine with the act, otherwise moving forward would be an impossibility. the agenda for the night had not previously included spilling his guts in front of noelle, leaving room for her to either laugh at him of literally gut him. but if you asked him if he regretted it, he would put his foot down in defiance. sid was coming to realize he was significantly worse at maintaining healthy relationships with females than he’d once realized. or maybe it was just... people in general. a screw up, through and through, he was sure the people around him didn’t expect anything less. which could have been why they kept letting him sulk back, tail tucked and sorrow-filled eyes in tow. but what baffled him in this particular instance was that she seemed completely blind-sided at his revelation. sure, he had never outwardly explained his draw to her and how truly important her survival was to him. but the proof was in the pudding. when he would let her pick the music in the bus, knowing good and well that was something he took pride in doing 99% of the time. the way he would let her crawl into his bed on nights when she couldn’t get past the nightmares, forcing her into a state of vulnerability which he aided by cradling her frail form close to his chest until she fell asleep. it was all in the looks his eyes gave her, especially when she wasn’t returning his gaze. the amount of love he carted for this girl was more than he thought he was capable of housing. but she knew now -- or, she knew some. he would have to start being more open about his feeling in the future, the male concluded while shrugging his shoulders at her comment about lost time to be made up for. ❛ i haven’t got any plans for... oh, the rest of my life. what about you ?? ❜ he noted with an air of humor as he glance down at the watch on his wrist theatrically. but his words were spoken in complete seriousness. it was his life, and this is who he wanted to spend the rest of it with. be that a day, a month or years more. with her in company, this miserable existence became just a little brighter. more hopeful. once he’d returned to his own head after processing her actions, sid returned to his knees where he towered over her, looking down to catch her immediate embarrassment. ❛ you know, for a girl -- you’re pretty fuckin’ oblivious. even more so than myself, and that’s saying something. ❜ bringing a nimble hand up to brush her cheek with his thumb, sid held eye contact while his eyes softened to match his voice. saying it without saying it, he thought. it was a step. finding himself filling with the urge to resume contact, he didn’t hesitate to let his hand roam from her cheek to the back of her head -- pulling her to him into a hug with both hands, now. ❛ i never thought i would want to kiss you until it happened. and now... well, i’ve come to realize that it’s what i’ve wanted for a really long time.❜ he mumbled into her hair, nuzzling his nose into the crook of her neck.

I didn’t ask for it
Could she handle being friends with him? No, not right now anyways. But she hoped that with time, she could get over what he did and the feelings she still had for him. Because she didn’t want to lose him, she didn’t want to cut him off her life all over again. They were united once again by destiny, against all odds and that had to meant something. Maybe they weren’t meant to be a couple once again, maybe all they were meant to be was each other’s firsts but it was obvious that they were meant to be together, even if it wasn’t in a romantic way. And she couldn’t ignore that. Riley just needed time, she needed to get used to it. And she needed to get used to having to face him everyday, forgive him for what he did to her because she would never forget it. But she could forgive him, with time. “I can’t blame you for doing what’s right for you. We obviously reacted differently at the break up but the way you reacted to it, it broke me in more ways than one. I was never able to trust someone again, I haven’t had anyone in my life like that, I had no new relationships, no hook ups because I just gave up on it all. I didn’t think it was worth it because I thought I would just have to go through the same pain all over again.” She paused and looked down. “I always blamed myself for it. I wasn’t good enough, you needed someone better than me and that’s why you moved on so quickly. That all I was doing was keeping you tied in this relationship when what you really wanted was other girls.” Riley looked up to him when he placed his hands on her shoulders. She didn’t move away and she didn’t give any signs that she wanted him to move away. Feeling his touch again was comforting, it brought back a familiarity that she had missed. It made her feel normal for once, since the outbreak happened. “I don’t expect us to go back to what we used to be, I don’t want to go back to that. Yes, I still have feelings for you and deep down, I think I will always love you because you were my first. But in this world, how things are and how easily you can just go, I don’t want to have that connection with anyone. I want to be emotionally isolated from everyone, it’s the best way, the only way to survive with your sanity intact.” She let out a sigh and leaned in, resting her head against his shoulder and closing her eyes. She just needed to be close to him one last time, feel what it was like to be in his arms again because it would most likely never happen again. “But like I said, I don’t want to hate you when I die or when you die. I can’t just become your friend out of nowhere, I need time, Sidney. I need time to get used to be around you and see you everyday again without being your girlfriend. But I guess I can promise you that I won’t treat you like shit anymore. Unless you get too annoying, then I’ll kick you.” She pulled away and looked up to him with a small smile on her lips.
for the first time in a long time, he was at a complete loss for what to think or do. were these things supposed to happen amidst an apocalypse? truth be told, sid had been completely blind-sided when he’d received a blast from the past in the form of his ex-lover. here he was, trying to survive ; to live another day. to live as long as he possibly could in order to ( hopefully ) make it to the new world in one piece. how was he supposed to do that and juggle drama from his past life? it seemed cruel and albeit, a little unfair to the unruly-haired male. then again, what he did to her could be deduced as the same in a sense. maybe this was karma coming back around for seconds, as if walking among the dead for the rest of existence wasn’t enough. sid wondered if these things happened for other people, too. if they were lucky enough to have people from their past show up, reawakening old flames which would leave them in the corner trying not to set fire to their newly established life. her side of the story was sound and sid was surprised it had taken him this long to truly grasp why she had taken such a drastic step away from him. her heart had been hurting for so long. this thought caused a pain to erupt within his chest, and he found himself relishing in the feel of her head where it came to rest upon his chest. like old time, yet somehow different. this wasn’t a conversation about reconciliation, necessarily. sid just wanted her to forgive him so that hopefully, somewhere down the line if they didn’t become bested by this world, they could possibly become friends. ❛ you didn’t need to blame yourself for any of it, riley. break-ups happen and people fucking act out on them. i was never in the right mind to be moving on in the first place, but i can’t say that it didn’t help me cope. both with the fact that you were 2,000 miles away and that, in my mind, you were doing the exact same. that killed me. so i handled it. not in the best way imaginable, but i can promise you that it was never because i wanted to make you hate me. but in retrospect, making you hate me seems to have made you into a stronger person and for that, i’m thankful. you need to be strong in this life or you won’t survive. and you need to survive. ❜ he spoke in a gentle tone, stark in contrast to how they’d begun the conversation. his hands proceeded to rub her shoulders a few times in comfort before he relinquished his touch, taking a step back and dropping his hands to his sides. ❛ where i don’t agree with your decision to maintain strong bonds with people, i do see where you’re coming from. it’s hard, knowing that someday they will die. that’s an inevitability now. but i think you’re gonna find yourself poorly mistaken. i know you, you see. you care about people too fiercely. and you’re going to meet people whom you realize you can’t live without. ❜ he felt his troubles seemingly slip from his outer shell, as if her were shedding a skin and staring from scratch. one instance which included a smile from riley, a sight he was sure he’d never see again. ❛ i’d say i’m deserving of a few kicks, but i don’t expect you to give me much forewarning. i’m glad you don’t want to hate me when i die. because when i inevitably do kick the bucket, i’m gonna need you around to tell people just how awesome of a person i was. don’t let ‘em forget me, lady.❜
“five foot six is not tiny, sidney,” she corrected him with a bit of a huff. noelle was touchy about her height, wishing that she could have been granted two more inches. regardless, a smile was still able to grace her lips because of the lightness of the conversation occurring between the two. she made a mental note of the way that he seemed eager to bridge the gap of water between them. she wanted to scrunch her nose at the darkness of the water surrounding her but at least she felt more clean. and her attention was primarily focused on the stares and remarks coming from sid. “it’s all a matter of whether or not you get to experience those talents,” she easily countered, perfectly placing a wink at the end of her comment. noelle’s shoulder nudged him back but she didn’t pull away, leaving their bare arms remain in contact. “i would say that you’re being a pig but i’m pretty okay with it.”
sidney -- usually one to detest the sound of his full name, something told him he could get used to hearing it come out of her mouth. especially when she looked so damn good saying it. worming his way under her skin was one of sid’s favorite pastimes and considering she made it such an easy thing to accomplish, he took the chance to do so as often as possible. one thing he knew for certain was that she hated being called short -- and for a woman of her vernacular, carting around such an intense fire behind her, things could turn lethal fast. which was why he chose not to pursue antagonizing her any longer. ❛ i was under the impression i already was, but if you wanna play hard to get that’s fine. you’ll find i’m a pretty persistent guy.❜ resting his chin atop his own shoulder whilst looking up through his lashes at her, sid relished in their proximity for a moment, taking even breaths in and out. ❛ plus, you’re the one who kissed me the last time we were alone together, if i do recall correctly.❜ he noted as he straightened up, stretching slender arms above his head. ❛ i’m sorry, i’ll stop -- i clearly don’t know where to draw the line between flattering and just plain creepy.❜ he deferred with a shake of his head, wet locks clinging to the sides of his face.
noelle was itching to plunge herself into the water, partly for leisurely purposes and partly for hygienic purposes. it wouldn’t be a proper cleansing but at least the grime would potentially slide off he skin. a whole other reason that she was excited to splash around in pond water was because of the unruly haired man using an inflatable mattress as a flotation device. “being resourceful, janko. if ya don’t sleep on it, you might as well give it some use in a makeshift pool.” there was a beaming grin on her face as she began to wade her way through the water. she had to hand it to him for thinking of this, an innovative idea that many people wouldn’t be able to entertain. noelle actually burst out into a fit of laughter when she caught sid’s reaction to seeing her in the water. she was shameless about her body, knowing very well that her frame was thin and fit. “i’m here to enjoy the water, not you,” she meekly said to her companion, finally making her way to sid and hopping onto the mattress with minimal splashing. “sorry, i know it’s not a bikini but it’s the best i could do.” noelle gave him an exaggerated pose, flaunting her body and her undergarments.
❛ i’ve always liked the way you think, noelle. who would’a ever thought you could shove both beauty and brains into such a tiny female. ❜ the male responded between short, hearty chuckles that fell past his lips with ease. as she drew closer, sid kicked his legs beneath the surface of the water to inch as close as he could and hopefully make her trek a bit shorter. he noted the dried blood that coated her pale skin in patches begin to wash away, the muddy water aiding in cleansing her despite its imperfect state itself. from the way her eyes darted to his, sinking into a knowing expression, he was sure he’d been foiled for gazing so openly. but he couldn’t help it, as anyone else in his current situation. he was a man to his core, and even the most minuscule things were all it took to get him going. ❛ can you not do both ?? you’re a girl of many talents. don’t deny it.❜ he joked partially, sending his shoulder nudge in her direction while managing to keep himself and the float level. ❛ i’m pretty sure i wasn’t complaining. ❜

“is that an inflatable mattress? you’re fuckin brilliant!” noelle called over to sid, taking in the sight of the young man lounging. the pond didn’t have the clearest water but it would suffice for pool in their given situation. noelle couldn’t recall the last time she had taken a leisurely dip and with sidney in the water she had suddenly become eager. “you don’t have to tell me twice. just give me a second to get off these disgusting clothes.” she didn’t think about the fact that she was peeling off her grimy jeans and tattered tank top to leave a pair of underwear and a strappy sports bra as her only garments. she didn’t remain on the shore for long, soon enough she was splashing into the water and making her way over to sid.
boosting the male’s virtually nonexistent ego was always a good way to go -- and as of late, the girl had done more than just simply succeed at the task ; she excelled at it. ❛ the same one from my tent. shame the thing has to sit in there unused for so long. it was too good of an opportunity to pass up.❜ he replied, laying back with his chin up and his eyes closed. that was until he registered her choice of words. back at camp, there were hardly any opportunities to view a scantily clad female ( willingly at least, and he was no pedo ). eyes snapping open and his head darting to the side, he watched her as she stripped of her clothing, knots growing in size within his stomach. ❛ oh, please do. ❜ he muttered mostly to himself, letting his eyes wander up and down her slender frame without the slightest hint of bashfulness. throwing his legs over the side of the float, he eagerly waited for her to join him.

➳ when sidney and noelle first found one another, she didn’t immediately see the appeal in the young man with the unmanageable hair. hell, all noelle could focus on was her franticness at attempting to find her father. something drew her to sidney, a pull that to this day noelle still cannot describe. she will tell you that their friendship began when she was out rummaging for food one night, dusk had began to settle in over the world and she was oblivious to the fact that a walker was determinedly creeping up behind her. she nearly screamed in surprise when sid came out of the soft darkness, hacking at the walker’s head with an impressive looking machete. while it was effective, he succeeded in spraying noelle with zombie guts. then sid promptly introduced him and noelle smacked him upside the head for making such a mess out of herself.
➳ it doesn’t happen often, but on restless night’s noelle is prone to having nightmares. they don’t have any real origin but she believes they spur from her unwillingness to speak about her feelings. the first few times, she woke up crippled with fear and to shake off the terror she would sit outside of her tent and do something to occupy her mind. usually that meant sharpening a knife or rearranging her pathetic amount of belongings. sid slept next to her and after a few times finally woke up and questioned her about her short breathing, bags under eyes, and the weariness on her face. noelle cracked and broke down into tears and quietly mumbled to sidney all night long about her fears. the next morning she told him that she would stab him in the gut if he ever told anyone about the encounter.
➳ sidney and noelle were separated the first time they traveled together due to someone’s stupidity and thoughtless. meaning that their camp was tucked away and they had yet to encounter any walkers. some dumbass was foraging through one of the houses in the area and found firecrackers. they didn’t tell anyone and in their glee overlooked the fact that setting them off would create hell for the entire group. walkers flocked their camp immediately and though most of the group managed to make it out, they scattered in a million different directions. attached to sidney by this point, noelle cried the entire first night and called his name over the single radio they had. first she had lost her father and then she had lost sidney. at that point, she swore to herself that getting attached was no longer a possibility.
