When I posed my question on reddit; As I know video games are transnational and people from all around the world, view and perceive characters differently, based on where they are from. Pertaining to a project I am doing for a class, I was wondering if you guys would give me some insight on the character Mai Shiranui from Fatal Fury 2 and if you view her character as racially bias regarding Asian women? As well as if you view her character to be hyper-sexual and if you think that correlates with her race? I noticed that although the question was there for a couple days no one was commenting on it. As I went to my profile and clicked on the post to make sure that it was actually posted, I saw that the question had been removed. Which made sense because, when I tried to look for it on the main page I could not find it. Being that, Reddit is an American website I think the fact that they removed my post justifies everything Nakamura talked about in his essay. Pertaining to, how cybertypes and the internet are used as platforms to produce images and characters in a way which mirrors false stereotypes of minorities based on the dominant societies “knowledge” of them. My question possibly could have been viewed as threatening towards the desires of “privileged Western men”(Nakamura 2002), as the question implies that the way Mai is portrayed is racially bias, sexualizes her ethnicity and creates a hyper-sexual image of her. This question could have been seen as threatening and potentially could have created some controversy in the comments. The second picture showcases other posts about Mai, and from the pictures of these postings, it is easily seen that the pictures of her are sexualized and hyper-sexual. It is almost as if, only showcasing her in a sexual light is the only way your post will not be taken down.
