âReally?â Kate couldnât help the confusion that spread across her face. âI mean, I donât think Roman talks about it that much, but Iâm surprised sheâs kept it to herself all this time.â Kate figured half the town would have known about what went down between the two of them, but then again Sawyer could be unpredictable. Especially when she was angry and hurt. âI think he has been for the most part, but from what he told me â She showed up at his house.â She couldnât help but feel a bit defensive over her brother. It wasnât as though he was initially putting himself out there to be knocked down again.
Just as she was about to open her mouth once again, a sudden feeling hit her back. It was hard to explain. It wasnât painful, it didnât burn â but there was pressure. It took her brain a moment to realize what had just happened, but her hand grabbed her back as if it was an involuntary reaction. Her eyes met Shepâs full of confusion, and shock as it all began to process. âUh, I thinkâŠâ She paused for a moment as she brought her hand in front of her to see the blood that smeared all over her hand. âI think Iâve just been shot.â She said seconds before falling into Shepâs arms. As if her brain finally caught up to the trauma that just hit. Kate could feel the red liquid falling down her back, as if a damn had just broke and there was nothing to stop it. The feeling of lightheadedness took over, as she slowly became limp. What the hell just happened?Â
The moment he saw the surprised look on her face, time stopped. Blood coated her fingers as she pulled her hand away from her back and before he could form any words in response, Kate collapsed into him. He slowed her descent as he pulled her in carefully, feeling the sticky warmth of the blood on his own hand as he lowered her to the ground. âKate?â he said, voice stricken with worry. âHey, stay with me, okay? Youâre going to be okay.â
Gaze darting around, he saw a figure in the distance, cast in a haze behind the tears that were already welling in his eyes. Not now, he scolded himself. It wasnât that he had never seen anyone shot in front of him before â it wasnât an uncommon occurrence in his line of work â but to have it happen here of all places, at what was supposed to be a celebration to bring in a new year full of promise and hope for change, thatâs what really shook him to his core. He needed to keep himself together and call for help so she wouldnât lose her life when he could have saved it.
He yanked his radio from inside his suit jacket with a shaky hand. He wasnât officially on duty, but heâd had it on him, just in case; with how the last two major town events had gone down, he had been on alert all night â except now, and Kate had to pay the price. He had no idea who would hear him over the sound of the party upstairs or the fireworks that would be starting any minute now, but he needed to get the call out before âThis is Detective Decker. Shots fired at The Metro. One down. Send an ambulance ASAP.â

Collateral damage wasnât uncommon and sometimes a necessity. Hell, the bike festival proved that. His mission was to kill Shepherd Decker to push an even bigger ripple cascading through the small town, weakening its infrastructure. Then heâd plant some evidence linking the kill to one of the gangs causing an uproar with the townspeople who would sound an alarm for the gangs to leave. That was when Giancarlo would move in to take over Tonopah. Kate McNulty wasnât part of that plan. Well, her dadâs gonna be pissed. Dante placed his societal mask on, frantically moving to âhelpâ Shepherd with Kate.
âDid you just say shots fired?â the ADA asked, pulling out his handkerchief. Dante dropped down to âhelpâ with the woman, careful not to get blood on his suit. âDid she get shot?â Dante kept a bit of a distance from the pair. Eyes darting around in search for any curious party-goers, it was then when he realized everyone was too busy anticipating the New Year; chanting the countdown. Five. Four. Three.Â
Dante slipped his pistol out, silencer still on. âSorry âbout this, Chief. Big guy says you gotta go.â He raised the pistol. âNothing personal.â Two. One. He pulled the trigger.
Dante didnât stick around to see if anyone would find them. Again his pistol was concealed, his mask pulled over his face as he walked toward the celebrating crowd, confetti falling, lights strobing as the music started up.Â
