OA has developed a pretty solid relationship with Maggie's couch, as he's been spending more nights there than in his own bed, and it fits his six-foot-five frame so comfortably that he wonders if Maggie had him in mind when she bought it.
It's strategically positioned, as Maggie's bedroom is the next room over and OA could respond in an instant if he had to. He's worried about his partner and all that she's been through, and he's just glad she's letting him sleep on the couch in case she needs him.
OA, keep an eye on her, Isobel had said.
And as the self-imposed protector of Maggie Bell, he intends to do that all night long.

Send me a pairing and a prompt and Iâll write a 5-sentence fic.
Hi everyone! Is the 5-sentence fic still a Tumblr ask game? Iâm loving everyoneâs new Zibell content and would really love to get back into writing fic for them. I know there are some new Zibell shippers out there, so if youâd like to send me a shippy prompt, Iâll see if I can inspire my Zibell muse again!
Feels like forever since I've seen Maggie and OA smile together!! And are they leaving the office together? There has to be a fic in there somewhere, right? đ

In scrolling through all the new Zibell goodness on my dashboard, I realized that I wrote my last Maggie/OA ficlet over four years ago. How did that even happen? It's a silly AU ficlet that has nothing to do with the show, but I'm re-posting if you'd like to read.

Clip-clop, clip-clop, clip-clop.
The rhythm of the hoofbeats keeps steady time with the lively music coming from the saloon.  Itâs the most popular gathering place in town, and as the rider dismounts at the entrance and ties his horse to the hitching post, he can tell thereâs already a pretty good crowd inside.
He makes sure to take an extra moment to straighten the classic Stetson on his head and secure the shiny sheriffâs star on his shirt â and then he swings open the wooden doors to the saloon with enough force to bang them loudly against the wall, startling the other guests inside.
Much of the laughter and conversation ceases as the other customers set down their drinks and their attention is instantly drawn to the newcomer. Even the small band on stage is slightly stunned â there are a few musicians on the piano, guitar, and fiddle â and they just barely manage to finish their number. The guitar player quickly strums a few final chords and then he hands off his guitar and makes his way over to the entrance.
âEvening, Sheriff,â he says. âYou, uhâŚyou almost took my doors off their hinges.â
âWhat can I say? I like to make a big entrance,â the sheriff replies. He has a bit of a cocky lilt to his voice, and he gives a wink thatâs well-practiced and clearly never fails to get him what he wants.
âSheriff Nestor Vertiz,â he says, extending his hand for a courteous shake.
âJubal Valentine,â the other man introduces himself, firmly grasping Nestorâs hand.  âWelcome to Castilleâs.â
âHeard this is the best place in town,â Nestor comments as he surveys the room, but his tone is a bit harsh, as if heâs challenging Jubal to prove it.
âWell, you heard right,â Jubal replies, never one to back down from that kind of challenge.  âItâs been in the Castille family for generations.  Their daughter Isobel owns it now, and I just keep the place running.â
âMr. and Mrs.?â Nestor guesses.
Jubal laughs good-naturedly.  âDonât go spreading those rumors around town, Sheriff. Itâs just a business arrangement.â
âUnderstood,â Nestor says with a knowing smile.  âIn fact, Iâve got a little business arrangement to take care of myself tonight.â
âWell, we always keep your glass full,â Jubal assures him.  âHey, Tiff?â He calls out to the woman tending the bar. âTiff, take good care of Sheriff Vertiz hereâŚa full mug on the house, okay?â
The woman behind the counter nods, and Jubal gives Nestor a friendly clap on the shoulder as he motions towards an open seat at the bar.
âEvening, Sheriff,â Tiffany says kindly, taking a large mug and filling it with frothy, coppery beer.
âBetter make that two," Nestor tells her. âIâve got a friend meeting me here tonight.â
Tiffany nods agreeably and reaches for another mug.
âMake it a shot of tequila, Tiff.  The extra strong stuff.â
The voice belongs to another customer, and Tiffany can tell that heâs come directly from the office, as heâs dressed in a formal three-piece suit and matching fedora. When he approaches the bar, she gives him a welcoming smile and Nestor doesnât miss the manâs easy familiarity with the bar menu â and with the bartender.
âEvening, Mr. Scola,â Tiffany says. âYou sure you can handle tequila tonight?â
âTiff, I told you to call me Stuart,â the man grumbles as he lays his hat on the counter. âAnd Iâm gonna need the strongest tequila youâve got. The sheriff and I have business to discuss tonight.â
âIâll make it two shots then.â Tiffany hides her smile because she knows him just a little too well. âComing right up, Mr.âoh, um, Stuart.â
âStuart Scola,â Nestor says, rising to his feet to shake the other manâs hand. âThanks for meeting me here tonight.  I thought a drink might make the townâs, uh, problemâŚa little easier to swallow.â
âNot sure anythingâs gonna make that much money easy to swallow, Vertiz,â Scola replies coldly. âYou want me to fund your little witch hunt, you better guarantee me some results.â
âNot a problem,â Nestor assures him. âI always get results.â
Scola doesnât look convinced. Â His mouth sets in a tight line, even as Tiffany slides the drinks over the counter and he takes a shot and swallows slowly, letting the tequila burn his throat on the way down.
âLook, Scola,â Nestor says, and he takes a large swig of his own drink. âIâve chased a lot of outlaws in my time, and all it takes is a hefty sum of money to lure them out of hiding. Youâre the wealthiest man in town. You offer this guy something he canât resist, and I guarantee you that Iâll be there to put him behind bars.â
Scola shakes his head. âNah, this oneâs different, Vertiz. Sheâs too smart for that.â
âShe?â Nestor repeats in surprise.
âHeâs talking about Miss Maggie.â Tiffany canât help but chime in on the conversation. Sheâs been running a clean cloth over the counter, pretending to wipe up spilled liquor, but of course sheâs really eavesdropping on the latest plan to catch their townâs craftiest thief.
âAnd she just keeps on getting smarter,â Scola continues. âLast week she ran off a herd of twenty horses from Lady Trenholmâs ranch in the hills, and at the same time, twenty gold bars were stolen out of the bank downtown. Itâs like she was in two places at once and no one knows how she managed to do it.â
Nestor shrugs, as if the answer is completely obvious. âSounds like Miss Maggie has got herself a partner.â
Scola snorts at the idea. âNot so sure about that, Vertiz. Miss Maggie has always worked alone.â
Tiffany agrees. âIf Miss Maggie ever took on a partner, heâd have to be just as smart as she is.  Heâd have to be able to handle himself under fire.  You know, a real sharpshooter.  And heâd have to be someone she can trust.â
âNo other explanation for being in two places at once,â Nestor insists. Then he gives Scola a pointed look.  âBut if there are two of them, then my price increases.â
âIf there are two of them, any chance of you arresting Miss Maggie decreases,â Scola counters.
He shares a sideways glance with Tiffany, and they both seem to know what the other is thinking.
âMiss Maggie doesnât trust just anyone to have her back,â Tiffany finally says. âIf she has a partner, heâs not gonna let you anywhere near her. Sheâs damn good at her job, Sheriff.â
But Nestorâs confidence â or maybe cockiness â still isnât swayed.
âWell, lucky for her, Iâm damn good at mine.â
Nestorâs voice lowers determinedly and his eyebrows waggle at the prospect of a good hunt.  âAnd since Iâm the new sheriff in townâŚwell, the two of you just put Miss Maggie and her partner at the top of my most wanted list.â
Thank you @sgtbradfords and to everyone else for posting more Zibell content!! I've been out of the fandom for a while but all the gifs are making me want to watch again. Feel like it's been a while since Maggie and OA have shared some meaningful looks when one of them isn't in danger!!

Gosh, I don't know if I've ever seen him as anyone other than Hook. I should probably fix that immediately. Can anyone recommend some of his other work that I should watch?
I'm trying to put my random ficlets in an AO3 link, but I'm also adding this to Tumblr because this is such a good Smee gif @colinoeyebrows ! I loved Hook and Smee scenes on the show and thought that Smee needed a little ficlet of his own.
âHope, wait up!â
âOh, Mr. Smee, you might want to pick up the pace!â
Smee chuckles in spite of himself as the little girl excitedly runs ahead of him. Sheâs trying to imitate the way her father would give the same command, but her natural high pitch and the giggles that follow sound nothing like her father. But just to humor her â and just in case her father ever finds out â Smee does indeed amble a little faster.
They make their way down the main street of Storybrooke, and Hope tosses her little head, black waves of hair flying around her shoulders, her blue eyes alight with awe, and sheâs practically bouncing on her toes. Her excitement is contagious, and Smee feels like heâs a little boy again, filled with anticipation as they approach the newest shop in Storybrooke.
Soniaâs Sweets is printed in bold lettering across a huge grand opening sign adorned with bunches of bright, colorful balloons. Thereâs already a fairly large crowd gathered around the front door, and Smee and Hope wave to the dwarves as all seven of them chatter loudly while munching on some freshly baked cookies.
As the crowd disperses enough to allow them through, Smee grabs hold of the front door and sweeps his arm in a silly mock bow. âAfter you, milady,â he says.
âThank you, Mr. Smee,â Hope replies politely as she bounds through the door with a grin on her face.
The delicious aroma of all kinds of sweet treats is nearly overwhelming. There are more customers waiting in line, and when Smee and Hope take their place at the end, Hope canât resist pressing a small hand against the display glass and peering at the large selection of caramel apples covered in candy and sprinkles.
âHi, what can I get for you?â
The woman behind the counter gives them a friendly smile, and Smeeâs breath catches as her soft, gentle brown eyes make contact with his. Sheâs very pretty, with long brown hair that matches her eyes, and Smee notes her light blue apron and the name Sonia printed on her name tag.
Suddenly, his knees feel a bit weak.
Smee has flirted with his share of women over the years â after all, heâs a pirate â but it was never anything serious, as they usually spent more time swooning over his captain. But now that his captain is happily married to his true love, Smee wonders if he might find his own chance at love.
âThereâs so much stuff here!â Hope exclaims.
Sonia laughs and bends down a little to meet Hopeâs awestruck gaze. âWeâre very well-stocked,â she says assuredly. âAll kinds of candied apples, freshly made fudge, cakes and cupcakes, and lots of different cookies.â As she speaks, Sonia points out the various treats located around the store, and Hopeâs eyes grow larger at each one. âAnd we even have a full selection of frozen desserts over there.â
Hopeâs jaw drops and she hurries to the far side of the counter to get a better look.
âYour daughter is adorable,â Sonia tells Smee, watching Hope with amusement.
âOh, sheâsheâs not my daughter,â Smee explains quickly. âHer parents are just away for the weekend. Her father replaced one of the masts on his ship last week, so they sailed down the coast to make sure itâll hold up to the north winds this winter, but I think it was more so the two of them could have some time to themselves. You know, they both have such a hard time getting away from StorybrookeâŚâ
Smee realizes that heâs babbling a little bit, but heâs never been the most eloquent speaker in front of a pretty woman. âAnd since David is on call at the sheriffâs station this weekend, they thought it would be a good time, and Iâm just, uh, wellâŚâ
âThe babysitter?â
Smee frowns, as itâs not the cutthroat pirate image he tries hard for, but he finally gives a sheepish nod. âYeah, thatâs what I would call it.â
Heâs surprised but delighted when Sonia hides a shy smile behind her hand, and he wonders if sheâs not as turned off by meeting the babysitter as he would have thought.
âMr. Smee!â Hope interrupts excitedly. âCan we get some frozen yogurt?â
Frozen yogurt.
Well, Smee is completely smitten now.
âJust donât tell your parents.â Smee speaks in a mock stern voice, as if heâs sharing a secret with the little girl, but the delighted grin on his face gives away his own excitement. âTwo waffle cones with two scoops of chocolate, please,â he says eagerly.
âExcellent choice,â Sonia concurs with a lighthearted laugh as she reaches for two waffle cones. âI love chocolate.â
So does Smee, and because heâs so enraptured by this beautiful woman, he fidgets nervously and tugs his red hat further down around his ears because he doesnât know what else to do with his hands.
âI like your hat, Mr. Smee,â Sonia says shyly.
âOh, uhâŚWilliam. My name is William.â Smee feels the tips of his ears growing warm enough to match the color of his hat. âAnd my grandmother made it for me when I was a boy. Itâs always brought me good fortune.â
âLike maybe an extra scoop of frozen yogurt on the house?â she asks with a wink.
The modern frozen yogurt machine will forever be a marvel to Smee, and the fact that Sonia is so adept at using it to fill waffle cones with thick swirls of chocolate frozen yogurt means that he simply canât take his eyes off her.
Hope takes her cone eagerly and politely thanks Sonia with a big smile, and Soniaâs appreciative smile in return makes Smeeâs heart skip a beat.
And when she hands him his own cone â complete with an extra scoop of chocolatey goodness â Smee wonders if she brushes her fingers against his on purpose.
âThanks for stopping by, Mr. SmeeâŚWilliam,â she corrects herself quickly. âI hope Iâll see you again soon.â
The frozen yogurt is creamy and delightful, and Smee doesnât think heâs ever tasted anything quite so good. Hope is happily devouring her own cone, and Smee is able to sneak a quick glance over his shoulder as they head out the door. Sonia is already preparing an order for the next customer, still wearing that smile that makes Smeeâs heart thud inside his chest, and he wonders if Hope can hear the soft, lovesick sigh that escapes his lips.
And thatâs when he decides to ask Hook and Emma to go sailing again next weekend â just so he can take Hope for frozen yogurt again.
Merry Christmas! This is my gift to @4getfulimaginator here on AO3 and over on Tumblr for the Captain Swan Secret Santa 2025. I hope you donât mind but I took many liberties from the film to create this Captain Swan story!
Thank you to @cssecretsanta2020 on Tumblr for organizing and running my favorite event of the year again! I canât wait until I have some downtime to read all of the wonderful CS fics that will be coming out in the next few days from this event! âItâs a boy, Emma.â
The doctorâs voice barely even registers in Emmaâs mind because sheâs still trembling, the blood still pounding in her ears, her hair messily matted with sweat as she tries to catch her breath from the physical strain of the birth and the emotional struggle of the entire pregnancy.
From the moment the prison infirmary had allowed her a pregnancy test, sheâs wrestled with her doubts about having this baby.  Itâs not that sheâs afraid of doing it alone. After all, sheâs been alone for her entire life and gotten used to it.
But if this kid is going to have his best chance, itâs not going to be with her.
She had kept the pregnancy to herself until she no longer could because it was easier to avoid the cruel whispers from the other women when theyâre gathered in the cafeteria for assigned meal times.
~*~
âShe looks like sheâs about to pop at any moment.â
âYeah, I heard she got herself knocked up by some deadbeat whoâs letting her do the time for his crimes.â
âOr maybe sheâs been secretly banging one of the guards.â
âOr maybe I just need to punch you in the face,â Emma snaps, giving the rude loudmouth a hard shove.
âWhat the hell, Swan?â the other woman growls, returning the shove.
âWatch it, ladies.â Â The guards call out a warning from across the cafeteria.
They both exchange angry glares but have enough sense to walk away, and Emma barely makes it a few steps when she suddenly clutches her stomach with a gasp.
âSwan?â
The guards rush to make sure sheâs all right, but she thinks it's more to make sure she doesnât pass out on the floor rather than any actual concern for her condition.
Itâs a sharp but short contraction, and the pain fades quickly, but it only affirms the remaining doubts in her mind.
~*~
âEmma, just so you know, you can change your mind.â
No, she canât. Sheâs eighteen years old. Incarcerated and alone. She canât be a mother.
Sheâs already signed away that title anyway. They did the paperwork long before her labor even started, and she doesnât know why the doctor keeps insisting that thereâs another choice.
The baby is crying, and Emma refuses to look at him, instead gripping the side of the hospital bed until her knuckles are white, trying hard to calm her breathing and blink back tears.
The doctor cradles the little boy in his arms, and his face falls a bit when Emma shakes her head, adamant that she doesnât want to hold him.  He leans over to whisper something in the nurseâs ear, quietly handing the little boy over and giving a subtle nod towards the door.
They both step out of the roomâŚand then her baby is gone.
The room is dark and instantly feels cold and empty, the familiar pang of loneliness stabbing her in the gut. Emma tries a couple of deep breaths, but she canât hold back the emotion any longer, and with no one else around to see, she finally lets herself break down into strangled sobs.
~*~o~*~
âItâs a girl, Emma.â
The doctor has a gentle manner and a friendly smile as he places the little pink bundle into Emmaâs arms, and Emmaâs heart feels like itâs going to burst. Her eyes glisten with happy tears as she wraps both arms around her baby, and then she sneaks a glance at her husband.
Killian hasnât moved from her side since the labor began, and now he brushes sweaty tendrils of long hair behind his wifeâs ear.
âYouâre amazing, love,â he whispers, pressing a kiss against the side of her head.
âCongratulations, Dad,â Emma tells him.
Sheâs exhausted and her voice is a little hoarse, as the birth has taken its toll, but her heart is filled with joy. Itâs a bright Christmas morning, with sunlight sparkling on fresh snow, and while her first pregnancy eventually gave her Henry and all the love that came along with him, sheâll always be haunted by the darkness of that night.
Sometimes she still has to remind herself that sheâs not alone anymore.
Thereâs one thing I want you to be certain ofâŚthat I will always, always be by your side.
It wasnât so long ago that Killian had made that promise to her, and he fulfills it every day as a husband and now a father.  And this time, rather than trying to bear the pain by squeezing the cold plastic bars on the hospital bed, her hand had been encased in his warm, reassuring grip the entire time.
Itâs a little while later when two figures appear in the doorway, and it takes both Emma and Killian longer than usual to notice them because they canât tear their eyes away from their little girl.
âMom, Dad,â Emma finally acknowledges softly, and the baby squirms a little against her chest.
âOh, Emma, Killian,â Snow breathes.  âSheâs precious.â
âAre you sure youâre not upset about having another grandchild at your age?â Emma isnât so tired that she canât still be a little bit cheeky.
âOf course not,â David huffs. âIn fact, we always wanted a granddaughter whoâs half-princess and half-pirate.â
That deadpan tone of his makes it clear that itâs a little bit of a dig, but he and Killian have come to an understanding over the years, and Emma thinks that perhaps Prince Charming is fonder of his son-in-law than he likes to admit.
With the reassuring presence of her husband and her parents nearby, Emma leans back against the pillows and closes her eyes to rest, letting the baby do the same, and Killian squeezes his wifeâs hand, bringing it to his lips for a soft kiss.
The cozy warmth filling the room feels like Christmas magic, and Emma is surrounded by all the love and family that she had ever wished for. And with the newest member sleeping soundly in her arms, Emma no longer has any doubts that sheâs found her happy ending.
The baby gives a yawn and reaches out her own tiny hand to her parents. She hasnât entirely awoken yet, so Emma canât be sure, but she thinks her eyes might be as blue as her fatherâs.
Killian runs his fingers through his daughterâs wispy black hair, cradling her head in wonder, and Emma drops a kiss on the little girlâs forehead.

Just a small moment for Chapter 4 but heavy on the CS Christmas fluff. đĽ°

@cssecretsanta2020
âSwan, you should have woken me.â
Killian is still half-asleep as he makes his way down the stairs because the clanging of pots and pans and his wife bustling around the kitchen has drawn him out of bed earlier than expected.
Emma huffs a little as she flips the food on the skillet.  âKillian, Iâm fine. Itâs just pancakesâŚIâm pretty sure even a pregnant woman can make pancakes.â
âWell, something smells delicious,â he murmurs, stepping close enough so that his chest presses warmly against her back and so that he can bury his face in her hair and inhale deeply.  His hand and hook wrap around her waist, and he rubs his fingers in a small circle, wondering if the little one can sense his intentions.
It definitely has the intended effect on his wife.
Emma puts down the spatula and spins around in his arms, her mouth meeting his in a steamy kiss. Her hands run sensually along the scruff of his jaw, and Killian responds instantly to her, as he always does, deepening the kiss as her arms wrap around his neck, and sheâs well aware of what sheâs doing to him as she uses the extra weight of her belly to push him up against the counter.
His hook deftly slides between them to release the tie on her robe, his fingers sneaking inside to stroke bare skin, and hers skim over his shoulders and down his chest, quickly coaxing the next button on his shirt to come undone.
Theyâre so lost in each other that they donât notice tiny shimmers flashing like fireflies in the kitchen, rapidly multiplying and growing larger and brighter untilâ
âAwww, Mom!â
Emma and Killian break apart in surprise, scrambling to straighten their clothes at the sound of Henryâs loud groan.
âNext time Iâm opening a portal outside the house,â Henry grumbles as the lights vanish behind him. âAnd Iâll knock before I walk in onâŚââhe gestures to his mother and his stepfather in disgustââany more of this.â
âHenry!â  Emmaâs face lights up, and once her robe is fully tied again, she hurries over to wrap her son in a hug.  âIâm so glad youâre here, kid!â
âMe, too, Mom.â
As Emma and Henry embrace, Killian makes his way over and gives Henry a friendly clap on the shoulder.  âItâs good to see you, lad," he says. "Glad you made it back to this realm in time for Christmas.â
âWell, thereâs no place like home for the holidays, right?â Henry says. âAnd with the baby due any day now, I thought maybe I should get here sooner rather than later.â  A trace of a grin starts to break out on his face. âAnd I might have a Christmas present that needed special delivery.â
Emmaâs eyes brighten.  âWhat kind of present?â
Henry hums secretively, as if heâs considering making them wait until Christmas, but as his stepfather would say, they have to take advantage of the quiet moments in Storybrooke.
He reaches into his bag and pulls out a familiar brown leather-bound book wrapped in a big red bow.
Once Upon a Time.
âThought you might want the baby to know where she comes from,â he explains. âAnd the story of how her parents fell in love.â
Merry Christmas, @dazzlingstarlight! I was your Secret Santa this year. This seasonâand this story totally got away from me, so itâs going to have to have multiple chapters (probably 5 or less). I hope you donât mind future installments of your story coming after Christmas. I wonât have much time to write before the new year, but one of my big New Yearâs resolutions for 2026 is to finish my WIPs, so you shouldnât have too long to wait.
Word Count: 1909
Genre: Modern Auâenemies to lovers/fake dating
Summary: Based on an Audible original book, "10 Things I Hate About Christmas", as well as various bits and pieces from Hallmark Christmas movies, when Emma Swan mistakenly sends her boss, Regina Mills, the NSFW gag Christmas gift meant for her best friend, Ruby, sheâs convinced sheâs about to be firedâor worse. Luckily Reginaâs nephew, Killian Jones, has a plan to help her take back her gift before Reginaâs any the wiser. All Emma has to do is come back home with Killian to Storybrooke and pretend to be his girlfriend. The problem? Emma canât stand Killian. Can she pretend to be in love with him for three days in his quirky hometown? What happens when she sees a different side of him and realizes maybe she doesnât hate him after all?

âExcuse me,â came a voice behind her, âwhat do you think youâre doing?â
Emma Swan froze, one hand on the knob of her boss, Regina Millsâ office door, the other holding a hair pin an inch from the lock.
Oh no, oh no!, OH NO!!! This couldnât be happening to her. She was so getting fired!
Emma slowly turned around, thinking hard for an excuse, any excuse, she could give Sidney Glass, Miss Millsâ personal assistant, for why she was currently trying to break into her bossâs office.
This was all Killian Jonesâ fault, and if she went down, sheâd be taking him down with her.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Emma Swan liked her job; she really did. Sheâd been hired a year ago at the Mills Ad Agency under the direction of the world-famous Regina Mills. Companies far and wide came to Boston to meet with the advertising mogul to secure her services. On average, after a Regina Mills campaign, a company saw a 100% jump in profit.
This was the big leagues. Emma had finally made it.
True, sheâd yet to be put on any significant account, but that would come. In time, one of the big wigs would notice her hard work and dedication and give her the chance to prove herself.
Emma gathered up her briefcase, stepped out of her office and locked the door. The agency always closed from Christmas to New Yearâs, so she had only a week left of work before she was off for the year.
Good thing too! Christmas had snuck up on her this year. So much to do to get ready. Todayâs objective: get to the post office before it closed in order to mail a couple of Christmas gifts.Â
She was just turning away from her office, when she heard voicesâRegina Mills herself, and her nephew and second in command, Killian Jones.
Just the sound of that British accent made her blood boil. The man was a menace! As if it wasnât bad enough that he was an obvious nepo-hire, he seemed to have designated himself as her personal babysitter. Every time Emma turned around, Killian was there. Stopping at the water cooler near her desk fifteen times a day (seriously, invest in a water bottle!), humming along to her favorite music, sitting near her in the break room. He was always around.
It didnât help that he was hot as all hell. The fact that her heart rate picked up every time her eyes met his was utterly infuriating. Oh she knew men like him. Too sexy for his own good, and knowing it, he flirted with anything in a skirt  Well, anything but her that was. With her, he did nothing butâŚhover.
âI think Iâll put the new hire, Emma Swan, on the Nottingham account,â Regina said. âWhat do you think?â
There was a moment of silence, before Killian responded. âIâŚdonât think thatâs a good idea,â he said finally.
âReally?â Regina asked, a hint of surprise in her voice. âSheâs been doing good work. Seems like itâs time to give her a little more responsibility.â
âNo,â Killian said firmly. âSheâs not right for the Nottingham account. Big account like thatâŚno. We need someone else on it.â
As she listened to the conversation continue, and then move to other topics, Emmaâs fury grew, blossomed, nearly erupted. She wasnât right for the Nottingham account? She wasnât ready? The son of a bitch was actually actively sabotaging her now? Â
She was going to kill him. She was going to drive a stake of holly through his cold already-dead heart. Where the hell did he get off screwing her over like this?Â
She had to get out of here; had to leave before she did something stupid like stomp into her bossâs office and punched Killian Jones in the face. Repeatedly.
As she stormed to her car and then drove to the post office, her anger grew. A stake of holly through the heart wasnât good enough for him. She was fairly certain she wasnât a violent enough person to think of a torture worthy of his betrayal.
She made it to the post office five minutes before closing time and just barely was able to slap labels on her two packagesâone for her best friend Ruby Lucas and the other for her bossâand toss them in the mail chute before a voice came over the loud speaker. âThe post office is now closed. Please return at nine a.m. tomorrow morning for any future postal needs.â
But as frustrating as overhearing her bossâs nephew sabotaging her was, what happened five days later was worse. So very, very much worse.
âHey, Emma, you ready for the Naughty Christmas exchange?â came Rubyâs voice over facetime on the Saturday night before Christmas.
It was a tradition theyâd started when they were roommates during their freshman year of college. Every year, they got each other the most over the top, ridiculous, not-safe-for-work Christmas gift they could find, and they always did their exchange the weekend before Christmas. It was something only Ruby could have dreamed up, but Emma had to admit, it was fun.
After Emma opened her giftâlaughing over the thong her friend bought herâcomplete with Captain Hookâs face stamped across the front, suggestive leer on his face, it was time for Ruby to open hers.
Emma watched, grinning as Ruby pulled the paper from the box with abandonâŚ.but her grin faded and then slowly turned to dawning horror, when her friend held the unwrapped box before the camera.
Instead of the sour apple flavored edible underwear with âtaste my forbidden fruitâ across the butt, Ruby held up an expensive, tasteful box of chocolates.
The chocolates she had intended to give to her boss for Christmas.
Somehow, between the rage at Killian and the hustle and bustle and hurry as she tried to make it in under the wire at the post office, sheâd switched her two packages.
And if Ruby got the chocolates, that meant sheâd sent Regina MillsâŚ.oh no! This couldnât be happening!
Sheâd sent her boss a pair of edible underwear for Christmas. She was sooooo getting fired.
And so she found herself at the office dark and early Monday morning, a good two hours before anyone else normally arrived, desperately trying to break into her bossâs office and retrieve her mistaken gift
âExcuse me, what do you think youâre doing?â
Emma spun around to face Reginaâs oily, sycophantic secretary, mind racing for an excuse that sounded plausible. âI uhâŚI wanted toâŚ.you see I think I forgot to sign the card I put on my gift for Regina. I wanted to check and make sure.â
Sidney frowned at her for another moment, before saying something that chilled her to the marrow of her bones. âYou wonât find her gifts there. Miss Mills has all of her work gifts forwarded to her home in Storybrooke. Itâs her tradition to open them at her annual Christmas Eve party.â
At her Christmas Eve party?
Emma suddenly had visions of a swanky room packed with elegant people watching as Regina Mills opened her gift. Her stomach dropped to her toes. Regina wouldnât just fire her when she opened the gift in front of all her friends and family, sheâd kill her. Conjure a fireball in her hand and incinerate her.
This morning couldnât get any worse.
âWhat seems to be the problem?â the bane of her existence asked in his smooth (sexy) accent. The universe hated her. That was all there was to it. It despised her.
âNothing,â Emma stammered, turning tail and nearly running in the opposite direction. âNothing to concern yourself with.â
âWait!â he called after her, jogging to keep up, finally reaching her and stopping her with a hand to her arm. âItâs not nothing. Love, you look like youâve seen a ghost. What happened?â
Emma groaned. She knew that tone in his voice. He wouldnât give up without an answer. Well, might as well get the whole sordid thing out there. It wasnât like she could keep it from him anyway. In a couple days the whole fiasco would be the talk of the office grapevine.
âYour aunt is going to kill me,â she said simply. âYou see, there was a mix up at the post office last weekâŚâ Â
She went on to lay it all out for him.Â
âAnd so, you see, if she opens that gift at her party, in front of everyoneâŚâ
He nodded, his eyes dancing as he valiantly tried to subdue his smile at the ridiculous situation sheâd gotten herself into. âI see your dilemma.â
âIntercepting the gift here was my last hope,â Emma said, defeat heavy in her voice. âAnd nowâŚ.well, now Iâm just screwed.â
For a moment, Killian was silent as he scratched at a spot behind his ear. When he finally spoke, it was the very last thing Emma expected to hear. âAs it happens, I may be able to help you.â
âReally? How?â
âI attend my auntâs party every year,â he said. âPerhaps I can intercept your gift before it reaches her.â
Emmaâs eyes widened. He was offering to help her? What happened to constantly looking over her shoulder? Sabotaging her? âYou would do that for me? Whatâs the catch?â
There was that ear scratch again. This time it was accompanied by a blushâan actual blushâthat went all the way to his pointy ears. âIâŚ.uhâŚI need you to come home with me for Christmas, go to Reginaâs party as my plus one.â
Emmaâs jaw dropped. âYouâŚyou need me to what?â
He wouldnât look at her now. âI may have implied to my family that I have a new girlfriend, and they may have gotten the impression I was bringing her home for Christmas this year.â
âAnd you want me to pretend to be that girlfriend?â
âIt would be a win-win,â Killian said. âYou take back your gift before Regina opens it, and I get my family off my back. Weâd head to Storybrooke this evening and then return on the 26th. At a respectable time after Christmas, we can have a fake break up. What do you say, Swan?â
What did she say? On the one hand, it would give her a chance to save her job (and her life), but on the otherâ3 days with Killian Jones? Pretending to be his girlfriend? This could be the worst Christmas of her life!
But if she didnât, there would be no way to intercept the gift. She did really love her jobâŚ.and, well, Killian was offering to help her. She supposed she could put up with him for three days. It might not even be the end of the world to pretend to be his girlfriend. What did she really have to lose?
âFine,â she said on a sigh. âWhat time do we leave?â
Up next: We get Killianâs perspectiveâwhy heâs really been âhoveringâ around Emma. Why he tried to keep her off the Nottingham account, why he told his family he had a girlfriend. Meanwhile, Emma and Killian travel to Storybrooke and get set up in Killianâs momâsâZelenaâsâhouse. Yes, I know, having Zelena be Killianâs mom is super weird, but the Mills women being sisters and Reginaâs sister being Killianâs mom is necessary to the story. Donât worry! Weâll get plenty of other familiar characters in Storybrookeâincluding a very-much-alive Liam and Elsa.
Thank you so much @whimsicallyenchantedrose !! This is such a fun start to a story. I don't know that Audible book at all, so I can't wait to see everything play out in Captain Swan-style! No problem if it takes a little longer to finish. Merry Christmas!! đđ
