dislike the idea that a âhappy endingâ is base and boring
that an ending that is depressing and angsty and full of darkness automatically makes it âsomething moreâ
My issue with the 'happy ending' is when it comes about not as a result of the actions of the characters, but rather because of some deus ex machina that magically and inexplicably saves the day at the very last minute. The issue with the deus ex machina is that it takes away the characters' agency and essentially makes their actions worthless, because this transcendental force or fate would always have caused the result to be the same. Also, when a majority of movies/tv shows/books have a 'happy ending' you can safely assume that any story that you experience will have a 'happy ending.' So, whenever the characters are in trouble I know that it will be okay for them in the end; characters ever so rarely die off.
This is why I love stories like Game of Thrones. I want the constant fear that my favorite character might be killed, I want to be constantly on the edge of my seat, adrenaline pumping, not knowing how it's going to end. Then, the emotions of relief that they're still alive or the anguish when they die is so much more. Â
