Jem smiled at Kat and faced forward as she put her hand on the gate. Closing her eyes, she pushed open the large steel gate covered in spring flowers and vines. Memories, mortal and immortal, of spring were not as fond as those of other seasons, especially the more recent memories.
The gate swung open and released a strong and pleasant smell of spring flowers, the pollen causing Jem to sneeze. âI was allergic to pollen as a mortal,â Jem said âapparently it never left.â
Kat jumped at the sound of Jemâs sneeze, instantly digging into her sweater pocket to fish out a small packet of tissues she carries onhand. Kat doesnât normally have allergies, but it never hurt to be prepared. âHere you go, Miss Jem!â she offered the packet to her. âI havenât opened that one yet, so it should be safe for you to use - No boogers or germs!â
However, when Kat followed Jem further into the Spring Gardens, a sudden rush of sadness and dark feelings emerged inside her chest. She couldnât point it out for sure, but it made her feel somewhat sad, like she forgot something important.
âThank you,â Jem whispered, taking the tissue âthis usually doesnât bother me, but with all the Spring spirits here, well, they like to make known theyâre here.â
Seeing Katâs reaction, Jem stopped after the gate. âAre you alright? You look spooked.â Jem asked concerned, a Spring spirit should feel at home in their part of the Garden. âMemories flooding back? Scents tend to do that.â
