The christian family in these memes (which are absolutely all over facebook these days) genuinely do always look miserable. Who the fuck is relating to these stock mormon farm cultists. That is a couple who made love only once in pitch darkness with bags on their heads then celebrated the pregnancy with a feast of uncooked potatoes and warm tapwater. The baby seems intrigued though. Maybe only by the bottle of pills??
I think this might be one of the most incredible, unsettling and symbolic photos of today’s America I’ve ever seen. I can’t stop looking at it. It’s perfect.

Professor Vann had to admire his students for their tenacity. It had been many years since someone broke into his personal quarters in quest of some artifact or tome that would grant them insight on an upcoming exam, so for them to pull out this trick after such a dry spell was almost entertaining enough for him to let them succeed. Unfortunately they were going to get themselves killed if he didn't step in and his colleagues wouldn't be particularly happy with him if he let that happen.
The students, a trio too far along in their schooling to still be called "young adults" had broken into his rooms while he was away attending to his classes. The small charm on his door alerting him to their plot as much as the rumors the walls had passed on to him when he was having tea with them earlier.
He let them enter and rummage as he strode from his class to his room, not particularly rushing as catching them red handed with a specific item would make doling punishments easier. When he did come to his own door he knocked on it twice before entering to find it unsurprisingly empty of wayward students.
"Oh where, oh where did I leave my glasses?" He spoke, acting as though it was to himself. He was old enough to get away with it most of the time. "Truly you'd think after needing them for two centuries I'd have stopped losing them so often..."
He heard a frightened voice squeak from under his bed as he stepped too close. A short "sh" coming from beside it. Two found, only the third to go.
"Hmm..." an absent minded knock against his wardrobe resulted in the final student jolting so hard the whole thing shook. "If only I had three bright and wonderful young women to help me find them... Perhaps them showing an old man a little compassion by assisting him in such a way would result in fewer hours spent doing clerical chores after their dear professor finds them lurking about in his private rooms."
"No, no no. Hold the line!" One of the two under the bed hissed while the second clamored from beneath it. She dusted off her blouse and open robe, her eyes downcast with mock shame.
"I tried to tell them this was a bad idea." Ms. Amanda Ripley, a teachers pet to the highest degree, stated. "Also your glasses are on your head, sir."
"Ah, would you look at that!" he flipped them down onto the bridge of his nose. "Now would Ms. Yusupova and Ms. Antuma like to come out as well?"
There was a groan from the cupboard as Leila Yusupova, the leader of their little cohort, stepped out. Tahel Antuma, the mousiest, crawled from under the bed. All three women hung their heads and did their best to look remorseful despite that clearly not being the case.
"Ms.Yusupova, Is there anything you'd like to place in my hand before I look your way? Perhaps I simply forgot I had picked it up." Professor Vann didn't want to be harsher than the situation required. It may have been many years but he still certainly remembered being young and stupid from anxiety over his grades like they were.
He was expecting one of his notebooks of arcane wisdom to be placed in his outstretched hand, not a picture frame.
"What were you three even looking for anyways?" he expected it would be one of the many he had of himself and the dean of their school, or perhaps one from when he was young enough for his hair to still have color. He wasn't expecting to see a picture he'd kept hidden away for decades when he brought it forward to look at it. "This... couldn't be what you were seeking."
"It wasn't..." Yusupova said with a sigh. "You mentioned knowing a method to summon a stronger familiar. We have our summoning next week and well... You and the rest of the staff are always going on and on about pushing ourselves and taking every bit of the power that we can earn. Why shouldn't we get the strongest familiar's we can?"
"Your conviction is admirable, but did you not listen when I told you summoning a familiar stronger than what would come to you naturally is a grave danger?"
"The Dean says you summoned your familiar when you were nine- What nine year old could support Any familiar?"
"When was the last time you saw my familiar?"
"It's the bird in that instant painting, isn't it? You had to be thirty and it was still fine. Clearly a wizard can grow to make themself good enough for any familiar-"
"Ms. Yusupova, this was made only weeks before my poor little Rook was killed," the image was so small that Rook was only a black blur on his shoulder. He stared at his own smile, not being able to bring himself to look at the other men in the photograph.
"What?" she paused, apprehension in her gaze. She clearly understood that it was a great loss to lose a familiar of over twenty years, but not how it could make a wizard like him so insistent that his students push themselves in every aspect of their craft besides this one.
"Yes... I suppose it's a good thing the story has faded from the rumor mill. It was such a dreadful time."
"Professor..." Ripley spoke up, her brain had whirred away until it came up with the obvious solution to her and her friends current conundrum; getting the geezer to talk about some old story until he forgot to punish them for breaking into his rooms. "What happened? It seems like something my classmate might need to hear."
"Hmph. Yes, it probably is. Do you see this man here? The one in our old uniform. That was my dearest friend in the entire world. We met here in our very first class and we were absolutely inseparable. That other fellow beside him was his familiar."
"Wait- That's a human!" Ripley's faux-interest suddenly became real. "Familiars are supposed to only be Animals. I've heard of some taking human form under exceptional circumstances- to save their summoner or something, but I didn't know they could just, be human."
Professor Vann laughed. "Yes, that is true of all but the most powerful. A familiar's shape is not easily changed and they are all molded after animals. But the very most powerful, the ones who could rival most of your teachers in power, may choose to take other forms. Lavi was something astounding.
"Never before or since had I seen a familiar as powerful as him... He is why I forbid my students trying to summon familiars they are not strong enough for. Anta, my friend, was skin and bones. He slept near constantly and had to work so hard to keep enough magic flowing through him and into Lavi that he had burns in his every vein. He couldn't keep up with Lavi even when Lavi did everything he could to take up as little magic as possible... Hell, I think half the reason Lavi spent so much time as a human was so he could take care of Anta better."
"There had to have been a way to keep him sustained." Yusupova stared at the picture like she was seeing a prize she had never known she needed before. "You kept Rook fed beyond your means, didn't you?"
"There were many. And Anta pursued every last one. I and the Dean helped where we could, the three of us were a triad like you girls are, and eventually it all balanced out. It was precarious, and I never envied the work it took."
"So, then what happened? It sounds like things were fine after he adjusted" Yusupova scowled.
"Lavi was incredibly powerful. Anta could feed him, but often he couldn't control him or the effects he had on Anta's magic. I know it was an accident. I knew it then too.
"We had been out in the maze training. It was just a game of capture the flag, Rook and I were winning, Anta gave Lavi a spell to cast to knock Rook out of the sky. Nothing that should've done real damage but... but it did. Anta had fed too powerful of a spell into Lavi and Rook paid for it with his life."
There was silence from the women as the weight of century old grief settled back over the room.
"I'm so sorry," Antuma said, she laid her hand on his sleeve. Her condolences as genuine as she always was.
"How was Anta punished?" Ripley asked, her tone less sure than her words. "That- Rook would have been old enough that his death would have been classed as murder, right?"
"It would have been... We are not bound by any law but our own. You know that. No council nor king, only the wider community's will. The punishment for your actions are others' reactions to them.
"I... could not express to you the rage I felt when I held my little Rook's body. All that pain and grief boiled into something dangerous, something Anta knew was coming for him. I was not a powerful enough caster to have a chance against him and Lavi. He knew that, but he also knew I wasn't thinking straight. I wanted death, and I didn't care whose it was.
"He was my best friend. He'd known Rook for years and loved him almost as much as I did. He was grieving too, and wracked with his own guilt...
"He dispelled Lavi, and I ... No one ever attempted to punish me for what I did."
"You killed him," Ripley was looking at him like he was a stranger again.
"And I have regretted it every single day," he sets the frame back where it belongs tucked away behind a box of things he has not touched in a century and straightens himself up with a sigh. He unfortunately still had a job to do so he looked to his students and said, "A familiar is a grave responsibility. We let them chose us because when you take a familiar stronger than yourself you are wielding a power you definitionally can not control. If you want a more powerful familiar, become a more powerful wizard."
He got a chorus of nods, some more accepting and eager than others, before he escorted them from his room with a wave. They were good students and would make for phenomenal wizards, however like all others in their field ambition was a venomous snake they wore around their shoulders with pride.
It was only later he realized Ms. Ripley's plan to get them out of trouble had worked perfectly.
ive heard the argument that transitioning is a "voluntary surgery" and so its not necessary. while its true that medical transition is an elective surgery (all elective surgery means is that youre not going to die immediately if you dont have it now, as opposed to emergency surgery), most surgeries are elective. still, ive seen people argue, "would you let someone cut off a limb if they didn't want it?" and id say, yes. ive seen it done before
ive worked in hospitals for a long time, and years ago i saw a patient very frequently. he came in once every month or so, inpatient. one day he told me what he kept coming in for. he had a knee replacement, but it kept rejecting. so the hospital would take it out, keep him, and then put it back in. he told me that he was fighting to just have it amputated. he said he was in his 70s and he just didnt have enough time anymore to spend it all in the hospital. he said that he felt he could live a better and more fulfilling life for the years he had left if they just took the leg off. he could get a prosthetic and just not have to go to the hospital all the time. he said that the doctors were fighting him on it but that was what he wanted. i said that i understood, and that i hoped he could get that amputation
anyway, some time passed, and i saw him again. i asked whats up, he was beaming and said, "i got it done! they took the leg off!" i was like, "hell yeah man, how are you feeling?" and he said "well it hurts right now but im not gonna have to come here all the time anymore." he left the hospital some time later, and i never saw him again, which is all you can hope for when you work in a hospital
he also had an elective surgery, a "voluntary" surgery. he chose to have an amputation because he was suffering with the limb intact. and thats really what we're doing too. yes, transition surgeries are elective, but that doesnt mean that theyre not necessary to improve the quality of our lives
idk. i told my dad about this years ago, and my dad said he couldnt understand choosing that. but i could. and i hope hes still out of the hospital. i hope he never goes back
I know litcrit isn't for everyone And That's Fine but god it makes me so frustrated when someone responds to a piece of analysis with "I don't like that and it makes me uncomfortable so therefore it's laughably wrong and you're crazyyyyy for saying it." the classic example of this is how straight people often respond to basic queer readings ("lmao they're literally just friends you're clearly a virgin loser who's never had normal friends before"), but I'm also thinking about how fan people on tumblr sometimes respond to analyses that imply unpleasant things about characters they like or vice versa ("that scene doesn't mean anything it was improv it was a mistake they kept it in by accident it's obviously irrelevant it's distasteful to acknowledge you're actually the weird one for bringing up something so fucked up"). in my ap lit class in high school we had a substitute come in on the day we were supposed to discuss seamus heaney's "blackberry-picking" and he got absolutely scandalized at a bunch of seventeen-year-olds telling him that this poem about picking blackberries had a lot of uneasy sexual subtext, he told us we had twisted dirty minds, then when our regular teacher came back the next day she said "yeah that's exactly what the poem's about."
I'm not exaggerating the "that's wrong and you're crazy" btw, I have been called specifically "delusional" for textually-supported litcrit a remarkable number of times. some people would genuinely rather try to gaslight me than sit with an interpretation of a piece of fiction that disagrees with them.

shoutout to everyone in small fandoms who takes a character with one minute of screentime and decides to build an entire universe around them. to the oc creators, the rarepair shippers, the canon-divergence enthusiasts and the people who can’t stop asking “but what if?” and then proceed to spend 50k words answering their own question.
i genuinely think your joy is contagious. fandoms grow because people see someone having fun and think, “wait, i want to play too.” <3
If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.
1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.
2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.
3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.
4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.
5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.
Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.
Reblog to save for later. Your WIP will thank you.
I have a confession to make... I thought the idea of wireless headphones like air pods were so so stupid when they first came out. But having owned wireless headphone pods with a case I have to admit that I do enjoy them quite a lot. But we should still eat the spleen of every person who lobbied to phase out the headphone jack in electronics

Nichts gegen Peter Bob shipping, valid und you go girls, aber ☝️☝️☝️☝️ consider polycule. Oder zumindest Gleichberechtigung. Bob "Du hast echt schöne Augen, Justus. Wie 'n Reh..." Andrews und Justus *küsst vor Freude Peter* Jonas und vermutlich einige andere Instanzen die ich gerade nicht im Kopf habe, weil ich eigentlich nicht so into ddf shipping bin actually. Ich bestreite nicht dass Nummer Zwei und Drei nicht ein bisserl gay miteinander sind. Ich adde. Sie sind ALLE ein bisserl gay miteinander und ich finde das sollte gleichermaßen gewürdigt werden
