people believe that rivals to lovers is a way more common and preferred trope in the sports romance genre than it actually is, when the truth is that teammates are far more popular than rivals when it comes to sports rpf. true player to player rivalries at the pro level like sid/ovi are pretty hard to come by, like it's very much a once in a generation type deal (if that). rivalries have much more to do with the division and the teams histories with each other, and i think it's hard to be endeared to any single guy on a team that you hate especially to the point of shipping him with your favorite guy on your favorite team, so rival yaoi has a severe lack of material. players also just don't publicly hang out with members of other teams that much anyway, unless they had connections prior to being drafted like playing collegiate at the same time.

therefore, darrow/sevro would easily be the most popular yaoi for their team and potentially one of the most popular for their generation of players. they have ALL the sauce. they are extremely close and seemingly inseparable best friends who are not afraid to be affectionate and emotional with each other. darrow is the generational talent but also a big sweetheart and sevro is a pokemon that he sends out to fight people. they have a massive size difference. it would be like throwing steak to the fujowolves. (it may mean nothing to any of you but they are very much like willm*ck which is a popular yaoi on MY team that i just really dont like. i tried to get it and i just don't)

as someone who heavily lurks online sports fandom i've really thought so much about what it would be like for the AU and i'm honestly kinda bummed i can't expand upon it in the fic itself much more than i already have. and the state of the rpf and devro being popular is one of my favorite aspects of it as it makes dassius that much funnier. darrow has SERIOUS gay allegations and a dedicated faction of rpfers who really believe that he might not only be gay (or bi etc) but also be banging another hockey player. and they are RIGHT. it's just that they got who he's banging wrong. and it happens to be a guy that they hope tears his ACL every time he plays boston.

i think there might be a small chance that dassius gains a niche following (mainly with what i've said before about people who became endeared to him before he was drafted to the NHL, but hate new york) but the reason dassius can get away with being not nearly as careful as they think they are about their situationship is because the people who would be looking into stuff like cassius wearing darrow's t-shirt in public are not focused on cassius and darrow at all and instead are focused on proving that darrow is boning sevro on the off season. cassius fans wouldn't make the connection that darrow is also a fan of the band on that shirt he's wearing that season a lot, and if darrow fans saw photos of him wearing it they would be too busy getting angry that cassius is a poser about darrow's favorite band to notice that darrow hasn't worn that shirt in months despite wearing it all the time prior to that. they are being distracted by FAKE NEWS YAOI.
