to understand darla, you must get the bigger picture. born to abigail henderson and abigail alone … abigail was a daughter of 3, herself a short-lived actress, having moved to los angeles from new york city at age 17 to peruse a career in entertainment. the singular movie she was in was big for the time and people were certain she was going to be someone big - it didn’t happen. roles were hard to come by that weren’t the cutesy sidekick or best friend, and abigail’s agent wanted more for her than that. most of her younger years were spent attempting to break out (yes, due to lack of talent actually - no money will make that happen) to get into the mainstream, but she was just that girl that was casted aside, as much things in hollywood go. the stars in her eyes slowly dimmed and by the time she was 20, abigail’s career had fizzled out - not even background roles or non speaking parts were being offered, and she was all but dropped from her agent despite her mother's protests.

falling pregnant at 26, alone and scared, abigail did the one thing that she knew : pushed darla into acting. if she couldn’t have a blossoming career, the reason for her failures would carry on her dreams whether they liked it or not. her father was never informed of her existence, at least formally, though i’m sure by now he has something of an idea. darla has never met her father, as it felt very … forbidden to speak about him or ask questions (though, for all intents and purposes, it goes a little like this: abigail meets a man on her walk of shame back home to new york, and they hit it off. a short lived love affair with a wealthy man -- or so she thought ... -- who eventually would return to the united states, abigail in tow) .  anytime she dared, it was shut down. she knows very little about him from the small discoveries over the years.

since she was small, her mother wanted to have more for her daughter. by the time she was 6 months old, darla already had been in commercials + television roles. because she was such an easy baby, it wasn’t hard to work with her. she got her start a - la mary kate + ashley , as the youngest sibling of a sitcom. was mostly there to look cute, but as she got older, it became something she had actual part in. in ended when she was only 6, but by then, abigail was used to the checks continuing to come in - so the search was on for the next best thing. the search never stopped, actually. it became her life goal to make darla a fucking star.

being her manager, darla’s mother is known in the industry for being very … off. mom was definitely stage mom. never knew when to ask her daughter what she wanted, and darla never learned to speak up for herself. this is a trait that’s stuck with her ever since, the meek girl never speaking up when she’s uncomfortable, too afraid to loose everything she has and to be at the end of her mother’s wrath once more. everything was about abigail , never about darla. she doesn’t know anything about herself beyond what her mother has told her - or forced her to believe.  her career grew over time. she never had major success , such as a lead role, but she definitely has had notable roles in different movies and television shows. never achieved mary kate & ashley duo-star, although that’s what her mother wanted.

NEGLECT TW    /    by the time darla was 10, her mom was going out and using darla’s money to party - to experience the ‘teenage’ years in hollywood she never got but always wanted. oftentimes, she’d find a ‘sit in’ babysitter so she didn’t have to spend hours on set with her daughter, instead fully exploring the dark side of what hollywood had to offer. her career continued on, and so did the fact that darla hated everything that was going on. she didn’t want to act, but she had no other choice.

 fast forward eight years later and darla’s mom is nowhere to be seen — darla cuts her off the minute the clock strikes twelve, and severs all contact. she’d been speaking to adult co -stars about the situation, and they all agreed that’s what best. it’s still the hardest thing she’s ever done, but enough was enough — despite the law stating portions of every check earned needed to go into a trust for when she became an adult, abigail spent it all. it’s gone -— darla knows better than to try and fight for it back. what would abigail do? she doesn’t have it, she blew it.

darla  is  contractually  obligated  to  a  few  more  movies,  and  after  that,  she  quits  for  good  and  sets  her  sights  on  a  new  horizon:  trying  to  be normal  - reconnect with her cousins and other family who isn't solely after her for dollar signs. fallen  behind  in  their  connection  as  children,  she  reaches  out  and  expects  the  worst  ----  though  pleasantly  surprised  when  they want to reconnect.  she  stays  there  for  a  week,  then  returns  home  to  los  angeles  lonelier  than  she'd  ever  been.  so?  she  moves  to  town.  it  takes  a  while,  but  she's  working on building these connections, got  a  part  time  job  and  hopefully  is  on  her  way  to  making  real  friends.

darla has not spoken to her mother since she 18th birthday, and while she hasn’t exactly made peace with the chaos abigail instilled in her life, if she never saw her again it’d be too soon. she’s in therapy, but there’s layers upon layers to unpack and darla truly hasn’t even begun to scratch the surface.

fashion sense? unknown. if she feels comfortable in it that day, she’ll wear it. dresses one day and sweats the next. doesn’t care about the weather — she’ll wear whatever she wants, rain or shine. 

dramatic in the sitcom kind of way that’s very over the top, but she means it’s. has a fear of spiders and bugs and gross things so much so that she’ll lose her damn mind if one of them is within her vicinity. 

her favorite color is pink! definitely leans into the girly girl look, and tends to act like a princess lowkey. it’s a whole thing. though she’s not bratty — she tends to instead focus on trying to weaponize her quick wit, which, depending on the scenario .. goes really good or really bad. it’s a coin flip. 

still very naive .. she was sheltered, but in the ostracizing kind of shelter, not something to be protected from, but shut out. she’s learning, though! tends to try to see the best in people and not realize how evil or decicing some may be. 

has never had her first kiss that wasn’t on camera or on a set. she’s had crushes, but she’s never had a relationship. she’s never done anything explicit. she’s not shy, nor prudish, but she’s anxious about it --— darla doesn’t quite know how to interact in romantic senses in the way that wasn’t written into a script. new territory unfounded.

despite her hardships, darla is soft as a cupcake. she tends to think of the world in daisies and roses, but gets pricked by the thorns. sees the good in most things, but if you cross her, she becomes skittish -- much like a feral cat. doesn't bite the hand that feeds, but the moment it flinches, she retreats. uses her friends to double check people's vibes when she's unsure, and trusts those around her to keep her safe. an unspoken rule that she'd do the same.
