“How much older are we talking, anyway?” Jaskier asked, leaning his cheek on his fist. “Thirty?”
Geralt returned to his drink.
Jaskier raised an eyebrow. “Forty?”
Nothing.
Jaskier smiled. “Fifty?”
Geralt drank.
“Oh, this is interesting. Sixty?”
“Enough.”
“Seventy?”
Geralt finally looked at him.
Jaskier's eyes widened theatrically. “Eighty? Gods, and everything still works at that age? Now that's reassuring.”
Geralt barked out a laugh before he could stop himself.
Jaskier looked enormously pleased.
Geralt met his eyes. “You're only proving my point.”
“What point?”
“You're still a teenager. Only need five minutes talking to you to know.”
Jaskier rolled his eyes fondly, not one ounce of confidence leaving his expression. “And yet I could teach you a thing or two.”
Geralt stared at him. Nothing came to mind.
Jaskier noticed immediately, and the satisfaction on his face grew with every second Geralt failed to answer.
“Oh,” he murmured, leaning a little closer. “I've actually left you speechless.”
Geralt snorted and reached for his ale. “When I was your age, I knew when to stop talking nonsense.”
“And where's the fun in that?”
"Actually getting to twenty."
Jaskier laughed. “Fair point. Getting lectured on safe flirting by an ancient witcher wasn't on my list of things to do today, but I'm rather glad it happened.”
Geralt gave him a look. “Not ancient.”
“Mm, and yet here I am - a grown adult, devastatingly charming, clearly getting along with you rather well- and you're still turning me down.”
“Grown adult's generous.”
“Oh, you're mean. I'm almost offended.” Jaskier's smile turned playful. “Perhaps if I promise to be very mature for the rest of the evening?”

Jaskier shook his head, failing to suppress a smile. "Oh, don't look so pleased with yourself."
"Hard not to when the self-proclaimed best lover on the Continent fantasizes about bedding me."
"Right now, I'm fantasizing about punching you in the face."
Geralt's smile only widened. "Didn't know you were into that sort of thing."
Jaskier stared at him.
Geralt leaned closer, entirely too pleased with himself. "Guess we'll have to explore that later."
"Oh, gods." Jaskier shoved lightly at his shoulder, fighting a laugh. "I've created a monster. I liked you better when you were emotionally constipated."
Geralt caught his wrist before he could pull away and kissed the inside of it, his eyes never leaving Jaskier's. "No, you didn't."

By the time the fire died, neither of them noticed.
At some point, sitting beside each other had become leaning into each other. Leaning had become another kiss, and another after that, until Jaskier had laughed into Geralt's mouth when he nearly lost his balance and pulled Geralt down with him.
Now Jaskier was lying on his back in the grass, his abandoned coat beneath his shoulders, and Geralt was half over him, braced carefully on one elbow while Jaskier's fingers remained tangled in his hair.
It was ridiculous.
Geralt couldn't remember the last time he'd kissed someone simply because he wanted to keep kissing them, without urgency or expectation of where it had to lead. Every time they separated, one of them seemed to find some reason to close the distance again.
Jaskier kissed him slowly, caught Geralt's lower lip for a moment and released it with a smile. "This is absurd."
Geralt kissed the corner of his mouth. "Complaining?"
"Not remotely. I'm simply fairly certain I haven't lain around in the grass making out with someone like this since I was a student."
Geralt smiled against his cheek. "Haven't since I was a teenager."
Jaskier went completely still beneath him.
Geralt lifted his head. "What?"
Jaskier was staring at him. "A teenager?"
"Yeah."
Jaskier raised his eyebrows, chuckling. "You did this as a teenager?"
Geralt frowned. "Why wouldn't I?"
"I don't know. I suppose some part of me assumed you emerged fully formed from Kaer Morhen at approximately thirty-five years old, already scowling and carrying two swords."
Geralt laughed.
Jaskier's eyes widened further. "Wait. With whom?"
Geralt shook his head, smiling. "Doesn't matter."
"It matters enormously."
Geralt leaned down to kiss him again, but Jaskier caught his face between both hands and held him away.
"No, absolutely not. You cannot reveal the existence of adolescent Geralt and then expect me to simply move on. Who was it? Another witcher? Someone from a village? I need details. Was it terribly awkward? Were you brooding even then? Gods, did you actually flirt, or did you just stare intensely at someone until they kissed you?"
Geralt caught one of his wrists, laughing despite himself. "I had a life before you, Jaskier."
Jaskier looked genuinely offended. "No."
Geralt raised an eyebrow. "No?"
"No. I refuse to accept that."
"Jaskier, I met you when I was already-"
"Uh, don't care. As far as I'm concerned, nothing of significance happened before I arrived."
Geralt smiled, bumping their noses together. "That's convenient."
"It's historically accurate."
Geralt shook his head and kissed him.
Jaskier's protest immediately dissolved into a laugh against his mouth.
The sound made Geralt smile too, and for a few moments they were hopeless at kissing because neither could stop laughing properly. Jaskier tried to say something about Geralt's mysterious youthful romances; Geralt silenced him with another kiss, which only made Jaskier laugh harder.
Jaskier writes a ridiculous song about Geralt’s dick purely for his own amusement and, more importantly, because he’s determined to make Geralt laugh. It’s never meant to leave the room.
Somehow, it does.
Before either of them realizes what’s happened, the song has spread across the Continent. Other bards pick it up, completely missing the joke and performing it with the solemn grandeur of an ancient heroic ballad, apparently convinced that all the increasingly outrageous metaphors are about Geralt’s strength, courage and legendary deeds.
Geralt is horrified.
Jaskier is having the time of his life.
And it only gets worse when Geralt walks into a crowded tavern one evening and hears an entire room passionately singing along to a dramatic verse about the *White Wolf’s mighty sword* while Jaskier sits beside him, shaking with barely contained laughter.
He only heard Jaskier shout his name before two hands struck his chest and sent him stumbling sideways. By the time he turned, the blade was already buried beneath Jaskier's ribs.
For one impossible second, they simply stared at each other.
Jaskier looked down at the steel as though he couldn't quite understand what it was doing there, then raised his eyes to Geralt.
The attacker pulled the blade free.
Geralt killed him without remembering the motion.
When he turned back, Jaskier was swaying.
"I'm all right," Jaskier said automatically.
Then blood touched his lips. His knees folded.
Geralt caught him before he hit the ground and lowered him into his lap, tearing open the ruined fabric around the wound.
The sight beneath it made something cold settle inside him.
"No."
He pressed his hand over the wound.
Jaskier cried out, fingers closing around Geralt's wrist.
"Don't stop. Just... keep it there."
Geralt pressed harder. Blood immediately slipped between his fingers.
Too much.
His hands started shaking.
"Geralt."
Geralt stared at the wound.
"Look at me."
He did.
Jaskier was already pale, but his eyes were still clear.
"I'm here. Don't go somewhere else in your head yet."
"It isn't stopping."
"I know."
Jaskier breathed carefully through the pain.
"But I'm still here."
Geralt pulled him closer, keeping pressure on the wound. Jaskier shivered and rested his head against Geralt's shoulder.
"Cold?"
"A little."
Geralt wrapped his coat around him.
Jaskier watched him for a moment.
"You're frightened."
Geralt said nothing.
"I'm frightened too."
That made Geralt look at him.
Jaskier tried to raise a hand, but Geralt had to catch it and bring it the rest of the way to his cheek.
"I'm not giving up."
Geralt leaned into his palm.
"I know."
Jaskier swallowed.
"I don't want to die."
Geralt closed his eyes.
"I don't want to leave you."
Geralt's grip tightened around him.
Then he looked down and saw the pool of blood spreading beneath them.
Jaskier followed his gaze.
Fear flashed across his face.
"Don't."
Geralt looked up.
"Look at me."
Geralt did.
Jaskier's lips had lost almost all their colour.
"Geralt."
Geralt bowed his head.
"Please."
"I'm here."
"Not now."
Geralt's voice broke.
"Please, not now. I haven't,-"
He stopped.
Jaskier watched him, and somehow the faintest warmth returned to his expression.
"Confessed your undying love to me?"
Geralt broke.
A tear slipped down his cheek.
"Not like this."
Jaskier's expression softened.
"Then don't."
Geralt looked at him.
"Tell me later. Tomorrow, alright?"
Jaskier's thumb moved weakly against his cheek.
"Somewhere warm. Without all the blood."
A broken laugh escaped Geralt.
For a moment they simply looked at each other.
Years of roads, arguments, songs and things left unsaid seemed to sit between them.
Geralt's hand moved to the back of Jaskier's neck.
Jaskier's breath caught.
Their foreheads touched.
"Geralt."
Geralt pulled back slightly.
Jaskier's gaze dropped to his mouth, then returned to his eyes.
And then Geralt kissed him.
It was desperate at first, almost frightened, before he softened immediately, remembering how fragile Jaskier felt in his arms.
Jaskier barely had the strength to respond, but his fingers curled weakly into Geralt's coat.
When Geralt pulled away, Jaskier's eyes stayed closed.
"That was..." He paused for breath. "Better."
Geralt almost smiled.
Then Jaskier whispered, "Thank you."
Geralt shook his head.
"Not goodbye."
Jaskier looked at him.
"Just... thank you. For everything."
"Tell me tomorrow."
Jaskier gave the smallest nod.
"Tomorrow."
His eyes fluttered.
"Jaskier."
They opened halfway.
"Stay with me."
Jaskier tried to answer. "Trying."
Then his eyes closed. His hand went completely limp.
Geralt froze.
"Jaskier?"
Nothing.
"No."
He shook him.
"Jaskier."
Nothing.
"No, no, no."
Geralt pulled him tighter against his chest.
"Open your eyes. Come on."
He couldn't recognize his own voice.
"Please."
Tears fell onto Jaskier's face, mixing with the blood already smeared across his cheek.
Geralt pressed his forehead against Jaskier's.
"Please stay with me. Please."
His whole body shook.
"Don't leave me."
For several terrible seconds, there was nothing.
Then Geralt remembered. Heartbeat.
His fingers went to Jaskier's throat.
Nothing.
He moved them.
"Come on."
Then-
A faint beat.
Another.
Geralt opened his eyes.
"You're still here."
Something changed in him. The panic didn't disappear. It hardened.
"You're not dying here."
He tore open his potion case and drank one bottle, then another, ignoring the violent burn through his body and the pain of his own injuries suddenly sharpening into focus.
He bound Jaskier's wound tightly and lifted him.
His damaged ribs screamed.
Geralt stood anyway.
Jaskier's head fell against his shoulder.
Geralt held him closer.
"I've got you."
There was a healer beyond the eastern ridge, farther than Geralt should have been able to run in his condition.
It didn't matter.
Enough was Jaskier opening his eyes again.
Nothing less.
Geralt ran.
---
Jaskier woke four days later.
Geralt was beside the bed before his eyes fully opened.
"Geralt?"
"Here."
Jaskier studied his exhausted face.
"You stayed."
Geralt frowned as though the alternative had never existed.
Jaskier reached out, and Geralt took his hand immediately.
After a long silence, Jaskier said, "I remember."
Geralt went still.
"The undying love part."
Geralt looked away.
"And the kiss."
Jaskier's expression softened.
"You said not like that."
Geralt sat beside him.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then, quietly, "I love you."
Jaskier went still.
"Have for years. Kept thinking there'd be more time."
Geralt finally looked at him.
"Another road. Another winter. I thought there would always be later."
Jaskier squeezed his hand.
"You're here now."
Geralt nodded.
"So am I."
Geralt's thumb moved over his knuckles.
"Wanted you there."
"Where?"
"Everywhere."
Jaskier's eyes filled.
Then he smiled faintly.
"I love you too."
Geralt stared.
"Years?"
"Years."
Geralt leaned closer, but stopped.
Jaskier touched his cheek.
"You can kiss me properly this time."
Geralt did.
Slowly.
Without fear.
Later, when Jaskier's eyes began to close again, Geralt pulled the blanket higher around him.
"Sleep."
Jaskier smiled faintly.
"Geralt?"
"Hm."
"My undying love?"
Geralt sighed and kissed his forehead.
"My undying love is yours."
Jaskier smiled.
"Good."
Geralt stayed beside him, fingers wrapped around Jaskier's hand, feeling the steady pulse beneath his thumb.

For several seconds afterward, neither of them moved.
Then Geralt carefully shifted his weight and rolled onto his back beside Jaskier, and suddenly there was space between them where, only moments ago, there hadn't been any at all.
The room became strangely quiet.
Jaskier stared at the ceiling, breathing hard, his hair damp against his forehead and his skin still flushed with warmth, while Geralt lay beside him looking equally uncertain about what exactly was supposed to happen now.
They had crossed the line they'd been circling for weeks.
Months, perhaps.
And apparently neither of them had considered what came immediately after.
Jaskier swallowed.
"Well."
Geralt turned his head.
Jaskier was still trying to catch his breath.
"That was..."
He paused, apparently searching through an entire Oxenfurt education for the appropriate word.
"...nice."
There was silence.
Then Geralt laughed.
Not a snort or one of those tiny amused breaths Jaskier usually had to count as laughter, but an actual low, tired laugh that made Jaskier turn toward him in offense.
"Nice?"
"Shut up. I'm exhausted."
"Poet."
"I've temporarily lost access to language."
Geralt's smile remained.
"Nice."
"I'll compose something more eloquent in the morning."
Geralt shook his head, still laughing quietly.
"I put a lot of effort into making sure you felt good, and all I get is *nice*?"
Jaskier's eyebrows climbed.
"Oh, did you?"
Geralt gave him a look.
"My apologies. I hadn't realized you were expecting formal recognition. Would you like a written review? Perhaps a song? *An Ode to the White Wolf and His Considerable Efforts?*"
"Don't."
"I think it has potential."
Geralt rolled his eyes, but there was unmistakable amusement in them.
"Besides," Jaskier continued, recovering some of his usual confidence now that his breathing was finally beginning to settle, "you hardly looked like you were suffering through all that effort."
"Hm."
"Quite dedicated to your work, actually."
"Jaskier."
"Very thorough."
Geralt turned onto his side to look at him properly.
"You sounded like it was a lot more than nice."
Jaskier went still.
Geralt's smile widened.
"Oh, don't you dare."
"Witcher hearing."
"That is an obscene misuse of a mutation."
Geralt laughed again, and Jaskier covered his face with one hand.
"I cannot believe this. I trusted you with those sounds."
"You weren't exactly quiet."
"I was perfectly restrained."
"You weren't."
"Well, whose fault was that?"
That stopped Geralt's teasing for just a moment.
His expression softened as he looked at Jaskier, and when he spoke again there was none of the previous smugness in his voice.
"Mine, hopefully."
Jaskier lowered his hand.
Geralt shrugged one shoulder, suddenly looking almost shy despite everything that had just happened between them.
"I wanted you to feel good."
Something warm and unexpectedly tender tightened in Jaskier's chest.
There had been passion, certainly, but now that Geralt had said it aloud, Jaskier remembered all the smaller things too: the patience, the attention, the way Geralt had watched his face and listened to him, never assuming, always seeming more interested in Jaskier's happiness than proving anything about himself.
"You really were worried about that," Jaskier said quietly.
Geralt frowned as though it were obvious.
"Of course."
Jaskier stared at him for a moment, suddenly robbed of his teasing altogether.
"Well," he murmured eventually, his smile becoming softer, "for the record, it was considerably more than nice."
"Hm."
"Don't get smug."
"Wasn't."
"Liar."
Jaskier expected another laugh.
Instead Geralt lifted one arm.
"C'mere."
Jaskier blinked.
"What?"
"C'mere."
Geralt reached for him, catching him gently around the waist and drawing him across the small distance between them.
Jaskier went willingly, although his surprise must have been obvious because Geralt gave him a questioning look as he settled him against his chest.
"You want to cuddle."
"Hm."
"After."
"Hm."
Jaskier's delight spread slowly across his face.
"Oh, this is wonderful."
Geralt immediately looked suspicious.
"What."
"Nothing. I'm simply updating my understanding of witchers."
He laughed, tucking himself closer and slipping an arm comfortably across Geralt's stomach.
Geralt pulled the blanket over them before wrapping both arms securely around him.
That silenced Jaskier more effectively than the warning had.
For a moment he simply lay there, listening to Geralt's heartbeat gradually slowing beneath his ear while Geralt's fingers moved lazily through his damp hair.
"This might be my favorite part," Jaskier admitted quietly.
Geralt's hand paused.
"Really?"
Jaskier nodded against his chest.
Geralt was silent for a moment before his arms tightened around him.
"Mine too."
Jaskier smiled.
Then, because sincerity could only be endured for so long, he murmured, "Still, the part immediately preceding it was also quite nice."
Geralt's chest shook beneath his cheek with another quiet laugh.
"Go to sleep."
"Gladly."
Jaskier closed his eyes as Geralt pressed an absent kiss into his hair, and neither of them seemed uncertain about what came next anymore.
At first, Geralt had assumed the bard wanted what everyone else seemed to want from a witcher. A story.
There was no shortage of people fascinated by witchers from the safety of taverns and marketplaces. They wanted to hear about monsters slain beneath moonlight, impossible odds overcome through skill and luck, silver flashing through the darkness. They loved the legend of the White Wolf, provided they never had to witness the blood, the exhaustion, or the loneliness that followed every contract.
Jaskier, Geralt had decided, was no different. Louder, certainly. Far more persistent. Infinitely more irritating. But driven by the same curiosity all the same.
The bard wanted songs. Adventure. A famous witcher at his side made for excellent material. Soon enough, Geralt had thought, the novelty would wear off.
Humans always left eventually.
***
The monster had been faster than he'd expected.
He remembered claws. He remembered silver. He remembered pain exploding through his ribs as something sharp tore beneath his armor, followed almost immediately by the unmistakable burn of poison spreading through his veins.
After that...
Only fragments remained. Roach bolting into the trees. His sword slipping from numb fingers. The sky.
When Geralt opened his eyes again, he was lying exactly where he had fallen.
The forest was quiet. Almost unnaturally so.
His armor felt impossibly heavy, pressing him into the earth beneath him, while dried blood glued leather to torn skin. Every breath scraped through his chest like broken glass, and when he tried to move even a single finger, his body refused him completely.
The poison had done its work well. Above him, sunlight filtered lazily through the leaves.
Or perhaps it was evening. He couldn't tell.
Minutes might have passed. Hours. Possibly even a day.
Time dissolved when every heartbeat required conscious effort.
His medallion lay cold and still against his chest.
No monsters nearby. Only silence.
Geralt let his eyes drift shut again.
No one knew where he'd gone.
No one would come looking.
This was simply how witchers died. Not in glorious final battles. Not surrounded by grateful villagers.
Just alone.
"...Geralt?"
The voice floated faintly through the trees. Too faint. Too familiar.
Geralt barely reacted.
The poison was beginning to cause hallucinations. It wasn't unusual.
"...Geralt!"
Closer now. Urgent.
Branches snapped.
Someone was crashing through the undergrowth with absolutely no concern for stealth.
Then-
"Oh, gods..."
Geralt forced his eyes open.
Jaskier stood frozen at the edge of the clearing. For one long heartbeat, he didn't move. His eyes were fixed entirely on Geralt.
On the blood soaking through battered armor.
On the sword lying discarded several feet away.
On the fact that Geralt, who never stayed down, wasn't moving at all.
The color drained from the bard's face.
"...No."
The word barely existed. Then suddenly Jaskier was running.
He dropped to his knees so hard beside Geralt that the impact echoed through the clearing.
"Geralt."
His voice cracked.
"Oh, gods..."
His hands hovered helplessly over Geralt's wounds, darting from one injury to another without touching any of them, as though terrified that the wrong movement would somehow make everything worse.
"What happened?"
Geralt tried to answer. His lips barely moved. "...Poison."
Jaskier lea
Recognition flashed across the bard's face. Then panic. Real panic.
"No."
His breathing became quick and uneven.
"No, no, no..."
He looked wildly around the clearing as though expecting someone else to appear.
A healer. Another witcher. Anyone.
There was no one.
His gaze returned to Geralt.
His hands were shaking so violently now that he curled them into fists against his own knees.
"You can't..." His voice broke completely.
"You can't do this."
Geralt watched him quietly. He had seen this before.
The exact moment fear overwhelmed people.
Villagers who found loved ones buried beneath collapsed roofs.
Soldiers staring at dying friends.
The instant before reason disappeared entirely.
For one terrible second, Geralt expected Jaskier to break.
Instead, the bard squeezed his eyes shut.
He inhaled. Slowly. Deeply. Held it. Exhaled.
Again. And again.
When he finally opened his eyes, they were still bright with fear.
His hands still trembled. But the panic no longer controlled him.
"Right."
His voice remained quiet.
"We panic later."
Another steadying breath.
"First..." He swallowed.
"...first we get you somewhere safe."
Geralt stared at him.
The bard looked impossibly young. Barely more than a boy from Oxenfurt.
A musician. A scholar.
Someone whose hands belonged wrapped around a quill or resting against polished maple, coaxing melodies from strings.
Not kneeling in blood.
Not making life-or-death decisions in the middle of a forest.
He should have run. Any sensible human would have.
Instead, Jaskier rolled up his sleeves. "Come on."
His eyes moved carefully over Geralt's body.
Thinking.
Calculating.
"If I..."
He slipped his arms beneath Geralt's shoulders and pulled with everything he had.
Geralt moved perhaps an inch. Jaskier nearly fell backward.
"...Gods."
He laughed once. A strained, breathless sound born entirely from disbelief.
"What exactly do they feed witchers?"
He tried again. Nothing.
Again.
His boots dug furrows into the dirt.
His arms shook violently.
Again.
Again.
Each failure left him breathing harder than before, sweat dripping from his forehead despite the cool shade of the forest.
Yet every pause lasted only long enough for him to think.
Another angle. Another grip. Another attempt.
Geralt watched in growing disbelief.
How?
How was this frightened young bard finding the strength to keep trying?
He had seen seasoned mercenaries abandon companions whose wounds looked less severe than this.
He had watched knights freeze in battle.
Yet somehow this boy from Oxenfurt, who complained whenever rain ruined his boots and grumbled dramatically about sleeping outdoors, simply refused to surrender.
Eventually, through stubbornness more than technique, Jaskier managed to drag Geralt upright.
The movement sent agony lancing through Geralt's ribs.
He couldn't even groan.
Jaskier slipped beneath one armored arm, wrapping it across his own shoulders before bracing himself.
The instant Geralt's full weight settled against him, Jaskier's knees buckled.
"Oh..."
He staggered. Nearly collapsed.
"...you are..."
Another desperate effort.
"...absurdly heavy."
For one awful moment Geralt was certain they were both about to hit the ground.
Instead, Jaskier planted his boots, tightened both arms around Geralt's waist, and with a noise that sounded suspiciously like pure determination made audible, forced himself upright.
Every muscle in his body trembled. His breathing had become ragged.
Still... He took one step. Then another.
"Honestly," he muttered through clenched teeth, "reckless bloody witchers..."
Another staggering step.
"...always insisting on nearly dying in the most inconvenient places."
Another.
"You couldn't pick a roadside inn?"
Another.
"No."
"It had to be..."
He gasped for breath.
"...the middle of a forest."
Despite everything, Geralt almost smiled.
The complaints were familiar. Comforting. Yet beneath every muttered word lay something else.
Relief. Fear. Affection.
Jaskier wasn't scolding him. He was talking because silence terrified him.
He was terrified that if Geralt stopped hearing his voice... Geralt might stop listening altogether.
The journey to the nearest village should have taken little more than an hour.
With Geralt leaning heavily against him, it lasted until sunset.
Jaskier stumbled more times than Geralt could count. Each time he nearly fell, he somehow found the strength to stay upright.
He stopped every few dozen steps only long enough to catch his breath before forcing himself onward again.
He talked constantly. About Oxenfurt. About ridiculous nobles. About a pie he'd once eaten that had nearly made him cry with happiness.
About absolutely anything.
Geralt realized, eventually, that none of the stories were for Jaskier.
They were for him. To keep him awake.
To remind him there was still someone beside him.
To give him one more voice to follow through the haze of poison.
By the time they reached the village, Jaskier looked ready to collapse.
The healer barely glanced at Geralt before naming a price.
Jaskier emptied every coin from his purse onto the table. The healer counted. Then looked up.
"Not enough."
Silence settled. Slowly, Jaskier reached over his shoulder.
His fingers rested on his lute.
Geralt had never seen him let anyone else hold it. He had protected that instrument through storms, tavern brawls, and monsters alike.
Without another word, Jaskier unclasped the strap.
"...Take this."
The healer turned it over thoughtfully before finally nodding.
"That'll cover it."
Jaskier didn't even watch him carry it away. His attention had already returned to Geralt.
When Geralt woke again, sunlight streamed softly through the window.
His fever had broken.
The poison no longer clouded his thoughts.
Across the room, Jaskier sat asleep in a wooden chair beside the bed, still wearing clothes stained with dried blood and mud.
Dark circles shadowed his eyes.
The healer noticed Geralt watching him.
"Your friend finally fell asleep this morning," the old man said quietly. "Spent three days refusing to leave your bedside. I was beginning to think I'd have another patient."
Friend.
Geralt almost corrected him.
Instead... He remained silent.
Jaskier woke sometime that evening with a sleepy blink.
The moment he saw Geralt sitting up, relief spread across his face so openly that it almost hurt to witness.
"Oh." He smiled.
"You're awake."
Geralt studied him for a long time. "...Why?"
Jaskier frowned. "Why what?"
"You searched for me."
"You were gone too long."
"You carried me."
"You couldn't exactly walk."
"You gave away everything."
Jaskier looked genuinely confused.
"As opposed to... letting you die?"
"You sold your lute."
The bard glanced briefly toward the empty corner where it should have been. A flicker of sadness crossed his face. Then it disappeared.
"I can buy another."
Silence stretched between them. Finally Jaskier shrugged, smiling with that same effortless warmth Geralt had never understood.
"Because we're friends."
Geralt lowered his eyes. "...I'm not your friend."
The words came automatically. They had protected him for decades.
Jaskier considered that for a moment. Then smiled wider.
"Well," he said simply, "you are now."
Geralt looked at him. Really looked at him.
At the young man who had searched an entire forest because a witcher had been gone longer than expected.
Who had panicked, then mastered that panic.
Who had carried someone far stronger than himself until his own body threatened to give out.
Who had surrendered every coin he owned and the instrument he loved most in the world, without once expecting repayment.
For the first time in many years, Geralt realized he had been completely wrong about someone.
Geralt had barely shut the door before Jaskier was grinning. "You're filthy."
"Hm."
"You smell like wet forest."
"Hm."
"And I think that's someone else's blood."
Geralt's mouth twitched.
"Oh, there it is," Jaskier crowed. "The elusive smile! I knew you missed me."
"I was gone three days."
"A lifetime."
Geralt snorted.
The next thing Jaskier knew, he was being swept clean off his feet.
"Geralt!"
He laughed helplessly as the witcher tossed him onto the bed with practiced ease. The mattress bounced beneath him, and before he could sit up, Geralt climbed over him, bracing himself on either side.
Jaskier dissolved into giggles.
"Oh, this is terribly intimidating," he managed between laughs. "The famous White Wolf pinning me to a bed. If anyone could see-"
Geralt leaned down and kissed him.
It was impossible to continue speaking through that.
Jaskier kissed him back eagerly, hands finding the buttons of Geralt's shirt out of habit. He fumbled at the first one, smiling against Geralt's lips.
"You know," he murmured between kisses, "I've heard fascinating rumors about witcher stamina. I feel it would be academically irresponsible not to investigate."
Geralt paused. Only for a heartbeat.
Then he rested their foreheads together.
"...Not really in the mood."
Jaskier blinked. His hands stilled.
"Oh."
He searched Geralt's face, finding not embarrassment but something softer. A little tired around the edges.
"What mood are you in, then?"
Geralt shrugged one shoulder. "This."
He kissed Jaskier once.
"And..."
Another kiss, slower this time. "...Cuddling."
Silence. Then Jaskier burst into delighted laughter.
"Geralt."
"Hm?"
"That is disgustingly sweet."
"I'm not sweet."
"No?"
"No."
Jaskier laughed harder.
"I've been accused of many things," Geralt muttered.
"Monster hunter."
"Hm."
"Butcher of Blaviken."
"Hm."
"Secret cuddle enthusiast."
Geralt's eyes narrowed.
"...Careful."
"Oh, I'm terrified."
Without warning, Geralt's hands darted to Jaskier's sides.
Jaskier shrieked.
"Geralt!"
The witcher, traitor that he was, actually smirked. "You laugh too much."
"You—no—stop!"
Geralt absolutely did not stop.
Jaskier twisted and squirmed, laughing so hard he couldn't breathe, trying to shove Geralt away despite the fact that it was about as effective as arguing with a mountain.
"Mercy!"
"No."
"I'll write terrible songs about you!"
"You already do."
Jaskier managed to catch one of Geralt's wrists, only for the witcher to use the opportunity to pull him into a clumsy roll across the bed. Blankets tangled around their legs, pillows went flying, and somehow they ended up in a thoroughly undignified heap.
Breathless.
Laughing.
Geralt's hair had escaped its tie and was falling into his face.
Jaskier reached up, brushing it back behind one ear.
"There," he said softly. "Much better."
Geralt looked at him for a long moment before leaning in.
The kiss was unhurried. Warm. The kind that didn't ask for anything except closeness.
When they finally pulled apart, Jaskier smiled so brightly it almost hurt.
"You really are sweet."
"I'm really not."
"You threw me onto a bed just so you could kiss me and cuddle."
"I also tickled you."
"You did."
"Hardly sweet."
Jaskier cupped his cheek.
"Terribly sweet."
Geralt huffed the sort of sigh that meant you're impossible.
Jaskier answered by stealing another quick kiss.
Geralt stole one back. Then another.
Until neither of them could remember who had started it, and the room was filled with nothing but quiet laughter and the comfortable silence of two people who had long since stopped needing words.
Jaskier learned early on that loving Geralt meant learning restraint.
Not because Geralt didn't care. Jaskier had never doubted that, not really. But witchers weren't made for casual touches, for absent-minded affection. So Jaskier kept his hands mostly to himself. He settled for brushing shoulders, for bumping knees by the fire, for smiles instead of embraces. He loved Geralt quietly, in the language Geralt understood.
Years passed.
One evening, the tavern was loud enough to shake the rafters. Jaskier stood in the middle of it all, frowning at his lute as he carefully tuned a stubborn string. Patrons called his name, tankards clinked, someone shouted for another song.
The door opened.
Geralt strode in, mud on his boots and fresh scratches across his armor.
"Contract done," he grunted as he walked past.
Jaskier looked up with a grin. "Welcome back. I'll just fin-"
"I'm going to sleep."
"All right, I'll be up in-"
Geralt stopped.
Turned.
Without a word, he slipped two fingers beneath Jaskier's chin, tilting his face up. In front of half the tavern, in front of merchants, drunks and the serving girls who'd been flirting shamelessly with the bard all evening, Geralt leaned down and kissed him.
It wasn't hurried. It wasn't passionate.
Just deep enough to linger. Sweet enough to steal every coherent thought from Jaskier's head. Chaste enough that it somehow made it infinitely worse.
When Geralt pulled away, he rested his forehead there for the briefest heartbeat.
"Good night."
Then he walked upstairs.
Jaskier remained exactly where he'd been left, one hand still gripping a tuning peg.
The tavern had gone suspiciously quiet.
Someone coughed.
Someone else whispered, "Did... did the White Wolf just kiss him?"
Jaskier stared after Geralt with the expression of a man who had just witnessed magic.
He had graduated Oxenfurt with highest honors.
He had debated philosophers, charmed kings, survived djinns, dragons, and destiny itself.
And yet, in that moment, he could not have told anyone his own name.
His lute gave an offended twang as the string he'd been tuning snapped.
Jaskier blinked at it.
"...I think," he said faintly, "I've forgotten how lutes work."
Thinking had never been his strongest skill in a crisis.
Reacting, however, he did beautifully.
He spun around with a strangled shout and swung the frying pan with every bit of fear, desperation, and theatrical violence in his body.
Metal met face with a sound that was deeply, horribly satisfying.
The figure dropped.
Hard.
For one stunned second, Jaskier stood there panting, pan raised, the boy clinging to his leg.
Then the body on the ground groaned.
Jaskier blinked.
“Oh,” he said.
The man at his feet was not a monster.
At least, not obviously.
He was large, armored, and very much alive, though one hand had gone to his face where the pan had struck him. Silver flashed faintly at his shoulder. A sword hilt. Then another.
Jaskier’s stomach dipped.
A witcher.
“Oh,” he said again, with considerably less confidence.
The man groaned once more and rolled onto his back, glaring up at him with one golden eye that caught the little light there was.
Jaskier lowered the pan by a fraction.
“In my defense,” he said weakly, “you approached two terrified people in a haunted forest after dark and led with a deeply sinister question.”
The witcher stared at him.
Then he touched his bleeding nose, looked at the blood on his fingers, and let out a slow, pained breath.
“I didn’t creep,” he said.
Jaskier stared. “You appeared silently from the trees.”
“I walked.”
“Silently.”
“I’m a witcher.”
“That is not as reassuring as you seem to think."

Strong Jaskier who doesn't realize how strong he is?
Carrying an injured Geralt on his back like a sack of potatoes, muttering something about reckless witchers.
***
Geralt lifting one of Jaskier’s bags to pass it to the bard, almost tripping because of how heavy it is.
***
Jaskier, bathing shirtless in the river, showing off his ripped torso: Why can't we just go around? I don't want to climb another mountain, Geralt! I'm a delicate man!
Geralt, internally: eyes on his face, eyes on his face
***
Geralt refuses to take a medicine the healer gave him. "I'm fine, Jaskier. It will heal on its ow-"
Jaskier tackling Geralt to the ground, pinning him down. Both knees on Geralt’s shoulders, holding his mouth open, as he forces him to take the medicine. Yes, the same way you give medicine to a cat.
***
Kicking Geralt out of the bed, when the Witcher tries to steal the blanket back.

Knocking Geralt down on his ass, when Geralt tries to drag him out of the bed in the morning.

Lambert: C'mon, just hit me. I want to see how you throw a punch.
Jaskier: Are you sure? I don't want to hurt you.
Lambert: *snorts* You won't hurt me, bard, c'mon.
Jaskier: ...Okay, then. Here goes nothing. *knocks Lambert unconscious*
Geralt arguing with Jaskier, trying to convince him not to do something incredibly stupid.
Jaskier, naturally, refuses to listen.
So Geralt decides to shut him up the only way he can think of: by kissing him.
There has been enough sexual tension between them for a while that Geralt wanted to do it anyway. This just happens to be a convenient excuse. It stops Jaskier from doing something reckless and gives Geralt exactly what he’s been trying very hard not to want.
What Geralt should have remembered, though, is that the only thing this petty bard loves more than Geralt is winning an argument.
So Jaskier simply puts a hand over Geralt’s mouth, pushes him away, and says:
“I am absolutely going to react to that later. But we are not done here.”
Geralt uses the gossip he gets from Jaskier to help him get paid for this contracts.
Jaskier likes to gossip and he has a lot of secret and compromising information about everyone and Geralt listens to him when he talks about it, even when he's pretending not to.
So when some noble or mayor refuses to pay Geralt for a job, because he thinks he can get away with it, Geralt is like:
"Oh, fine... Guess your wife won't mind to hear you slept with her sister".
And just like that, he gets paid.

Bonus: he tells jaskier about it later and jaskier finds it hilarious
“I won’t lie,” he added. “I’ve been in love a ridiculous number of times.”
“I remember,” Geralt said dryly.
“Not the point,” Jaskier said, waving that off. “Those feelings came and went. They always did. They were loud, dramatic, occasionally ill-advised…”
Geralt huffed.
“But this-” Jaskier lifted their joined hands slightly between them, grounding himself in the contact, “-this stayed.”
Geralt stilled.
Jaskier met his gaze. “You’re the only person I’ve ever been able to talk to and know I’ll be understood,” he said. “Even when you were pretending not to listen.”
“I wasn’t-”
“You were,” Jaskier cut in gently. “You’re terrible at hiding it.”
Geralt’s mouth twitched faintly.
Jaskier’s expression softened.
“And you stayed,” he added, quieter now. “Through all of it. Through the songs, the disasters, the questionable decisions-”
“Many,” Geralt muttered.
“-many,” Jaskier agreed. “And somehow you’re still here.”
A pause.
“So no,” he said softly. “You didn’t fail to give me the life I want.”
He squeezed Geralt’s hand. “You are the life I want.”
Sitting on the bed, shoulders tight, like he hadn’t moved in a while. His head snapped up the moment the door opened.
Their eyes met.
Relief, quick, sharp, impossible to hide in time.
“Hey,” Jaskier said simply, closing the door behind him a little more quietly than usual. “Thought you’d be asleep already.”
Geralt didn’t answer. He just looked at him.
Jaskier didn’t look away. “Ugh, I’m so bloody tired,” he complained, strolling into the room, already unlacing his shirt. “I’m getting too old for this much excitement in one day.”
Still nothing.
And then, quieter-
“…you came back.”
Jaskier leaned his shoulder against the wall, fingers still working at the laces, watching him.
“…you want me to sleep in the stables?” he asked.
“That’s not what I said.”
Jaskier managed a small smile.
“Well,” he said lightly, “you looked so miserable when I left, I thought I’d come back and check if you survived.”
Geralt huffed softly, but didn’t look away. “Barely.”
A small pause.
“…so you’re staying?”
Jaskier sighed, tilting his head.
“I did consider a dramatic exit,” he said. “Storming into the night, vowing never to return, possibly acquiring a tragic backstory-”
Geralt’s shoulders tensed.
Jaskier waved a hand. “But it’s cold, and I’m tired, and frankly I don’t have the energy to reinvent myself tonight.”
He pushed off the wall and walked toward him, a little slower than usual, a little looser.
Geralt’s gaze sharpened.
“…you’ve been drinking.”
Jaskier smiled, unapologetic. “Lambert offered. I accepted. It felt rude not to.”
“How much?”
Jaskier tilted his head, considering. “Enough that I briefly considered forgiving you for everything without an argument.”
Geralt snorted, actual amusement this time.
Jaskier brightened immediately. “There it is. I knew you still had one of those.”
Geralt shook his head, but there was something warmer in his expression now. “You’re drunk.”
“I am charming,” Jaskier corrected, pointing at him. “There’s a difference.”
Geralt raised a brow.
Jaskier stepped closer, lowering his voice conspiratorially. “Also, whatever Lambert drinks is fucking strong. I’m fairly certain I saw the floor move at least once.”
Geralt huffed again, softer now. “That was you.”
“Unproven.”

Jaskier’s laughter softened into something breathless as Geralt stepped in closer, hands firm at his waist-
and then suddenly he was lifted in the air.
“Oh-” Jaskier let out a startled laugh as Geralt set him on the table, the movement easy, decisive.
“You, my dear Witcher” Jaskier murmured, smiling, already leaning into him. “Are deeply improper-”
Geralt’s answer was another kiss, cutting him off.
Jaskier melted into it immediately, his hands sliding into Geralt’s hair, pulling him closer as Geralt’s hands moved- steady, deliberate- shrugging his jacket off his shoulders.
The fabric slipped away easily.
Jaskier didn’t protest.
Didn’t even pretend to.
Instead, he shifted forward, wrapping his legs around Geralt’s middle, pulling him in tighter with a quiet, pleased sound.
“Geralt-”
Geralt’s hands followed, pushing his shirt open, slow but certain this time, no fumbling now.
Jaskier’s breath hitched, head tipping back when Geralt’s mouth found his neck again.
A soft sigh slipped out of him, unrestrained this time.
“Oh, that’s-” he breathed, fingers tightening in Geralt’s hair. “That’s not fair.”
Geralt didn’t answer.
Just lingered there, deliberate, unhurried.
Jaskier let out a small, frustrated laugh, tilting his head further to give him better access without even realizing it.
“You’re teasing me,” he murmured.
“Mm.”
