Juana de Ibarbourou, Collected Poems of Juana de Ibarbourou | The Star
His mouth was dry, stomach roiling akin to a choppy wave, and there was a sour taste clinging stubbornly to the back of his tongue. Judging by the blade of sunlight that cut through the gap in the curtain, he had been asleep for hours, yet his body felt as if it hadn't rested at all. Rubbing a hand over his face, Mikhail winced as the movement only served to make the pounding behind his eyes worse.
It was then that he noticed his phone lying on the floor, already half-way beneath it. Reaching for it, Mikhail squinted against the persistent thump of his headache as he bent down and then tried to read the bright screen - missed calls. All from Laynia.
"Nyet," he admitted hoarsely, tossing his phone at the table and flopping back into the threadbare couch, "I seek no lecture, Laynia - keep those for Nikolai."
Laynia skirted around the battered coffee table, nudging another empty bottle aside with the toe of her boot before lowering herself onto the couch beside him. The cushions dipped beneath her weight, and after a moment she bumped her knee lightly against his, more affectionate than admonishing.
“Kolya never listens to my lectures,” she pointed out, a faint trace of amusement finding its way into her voice. “We both know he only listens to you, Misha.”
She glanced toward the phone where he'd tossed it, then back at Mikhail, her expression softening. “I don't know how to help you, and I hate seeing you like this."
Muscles ached in argument as he pulled himself upright, a dull ache thudding across his brow with his pulse. His tongue felt like cottong, glued to the top of his mouth as he glanced around the dimly lit apartment in search of who had awoken him.
“— manners generally dictate to knock first, nyet?”
Laynia stepped inside and quietly closed the door behind her, her gaze immediately dropping to the empty bottles littering the floor. She nudged one aside with the toe of her boot, sending it rolling beneath the battered table.
There wasn't much to take in. A bed, a table, a couple of chairs, little else. No decoration, no photographs, nothing that suggested Mikhail had made any effort to make the place his own. It looked less like a home and more like somewhere he'd stopped because it happened to have four walls. Then her eyes settled on him as he pulled himself upright.
“Perhaps,” Laynia replied, moving another bottle out of her path. “But I had a feeling you wouldn't have answered, had I knocked?"
It was rare for the pot to realise it shared the same colour as the kettle, was it not? Arching a brow, Mikhail held Laynia's gaze for a beat, searching for some flicker of self-realisation and when it did not show, he struck its spark instead.
"In a Gulag where the guards allowed Yuri Bezukhov free rein to do as he wished among those incarcerated ... your ex-fiancé."
"... I was young and in love. And he wasn't half as angry back then as he is now."

"Glass houses and stones, Little Laynie."
Oh no, no way this just going to be glossed over as if it was nothing. Or as if he hadn't kept it from her all this time.
"Zimniy Soldat - the guy you fought in the Gulag?!"
"Well, guess we know what took you so long to get out of that Gulag now." @balshoy-medvyed
