Rocker, writer, nerd and nice guy James R. Tramontana has launched a serial comedy science fiction podcast called Ace Tucker Space Trucker. The weekly podcast follows the exploits of rock n roll roadie, Ace Tucker, on his quest to save Elvis Presley, the not-dead King of Rock n Roll, (and the entire galaxy) from unspeakable evil.

Ace Tucker Space Trucker owes its existence to groundbreaking serial fiction podcasts like Serial and Welcome to Night Vale as well as classic rock n roll and sci-fi satire like This is Spinal Tap and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It is unique in the world of radio drama podcasts because it is written, recorded, voiced, edited and scored by one individual dude: James R. Tramontana (of the bands Red Hot Rebellion, Spitvalves and Craterface).

Summary

Ace Tucker is a man who was raised in outer space and taught how to be human by a Russian cyborg chimpanzee. Ace earns a living as a rock-and-roll roadie and cargo hauler for the greatest band in the galaxy, Mustache Supernova. His world is turned upside down the night he meets Elvis Presley, the very not-dead King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. When Ace saves Elvis from an alien assassin he must travel to Memphis, Tennessee to restore Presley’s health. But things are not what they seem at Elvis’s pastoral home, Graceland. There, Ace makes a discovery that has the power to shape the future (and potentially undo the past).

On a cold Saturday night in January 2016, Fifty Dollar Famous set up at Craterface Studios in warm and cheerful Centerville, OH. They checked some levels then bullshitted around and watched House Hunters until bed time. Sunday morning they ate cereal while they checked local real estate listings. Then they got to work. From 10:30 AM until 6:30 PM they wrote and recorded 10 brand new punk rock anthem. The result (with the addition of two previously recorded tracks written and recorded in under an hour) is the most punk album ever made: Lower Your Standards.

The Rentiers is a name for whatever kind of music Joel Tannenbaum (Plow United, Ex Friends) feels like playing, and whoever he feels like playing it with. In theory this could meananything, like a record of calypso standards played by Joel, a disgraced Russian astronaut and a bonobo. In practice however, so far, it has primarily meant Mikey Erg (The Ergs!), Anika Pyle (Chumped), and a revolving cast of producers/arrangers that has included Seth Kauffman (Floating Action), Tyler Pursel (Gym Class Heroes) and Jesse Miller (Lotus). In 2014, after two decades on and off in DIY punk and indie pop bands, Joel finally gave up on anything ever working out the way it was supposed to. He decided from there on out to ignore all of the rules -written and unwritten- about how to be in a band and how to make a record. The Rentiers is what that sounds like. It sounds pretty good.

Amateur Hour

 is the latest effort by the Rentiers, an amorphous collective of East Coast punk and indie lifers, at the center of which is Joel Tannenbaum (Plow United, Ex Friends, the Skywriters, the Snow Fairies). Joined once again by Mikey Erg (The Ergs!) and Anika Pyle (Chumped), the fourth Rentiers release is all sorts of epic, featuring an expanded circle of friends including Dave Weston (Weston) and Heidi Vanderlee (Early Riser, The Chris Gethard Show) and Plow United frontman Brian McGee. Sensing the drama implicit in Tannenbaum's seemingly simple pop compositions, producer and multi-instrumentalist Scotty Sandwich (Death to False Hope Records) went for broke, layering the record with strings, horns and percussion, set carefully against the more conventional tools of the punk rock trade. Due out on February 29,

Overdale is the kind of street where the police are out almost every night. The kind of street where the sounds of neighbors fighting drift over the din of fire engines that are responding to house fires--an anything goes kind of spot. The unlikely place where members of the band sharing the same name lived during their formative years.

Inspired by the music they love, Overdale has never been shy about wearing their influences on their sleeves: Helmet, Quicksand, Fugazi and just about everything on Dischord Records, etc. It began as a side project from their main touring band at the time, Spitvalves. They swapped instruments from their main duties which put Charlie from vocals to drums, Tito from drums to bass guitar and Mikey from guitar to vocals and guitar. Though they've had brief moments as a 4-piece they've been a 3-piece for most of their existence.

The band has always been about having fun. They played shows and wrote when time allowed and it took a few years to have enough material to record a full-length. The early 2000's saw the band roll into Reel Time Studios in Holly Hill FL to record. The result is the self titled testament to overcoming odds and refusing to let the good times stop rolling.

Overdale, the band's eponymous album, is out on February 29, Leap Day, a day that comes but once every four years. The band is still kicking and functioning as a side project from its member's main effort, The Attack. And the band still manage to squeeze in a few shows and write new material from time to time. But, like Leap Day, it is a rare and special thing when they do.

  Joel Tannenbaum (Plow United, Ex Friends) is back with the Rentiers’ third release. And in case the “Black Metal Yoga” 7” (follow-up to debut 12” EP Here is a List of Things That Exist) didn’t make it clear, the operating principle of the Rentiers is that there's nothing to lose and absolutely anything goes. To that end, “The Early 2000s” is an inexplicably catchy throwback to the analog synth-driven indie-dance pop of -as the name suggests- the early 2000s, emblemized by bands like Figurine,Barcelona, Baxendale, Winterbrief and Fosca. But also, somehow, it’s the punkest Rentiers song yet. Anika Pyle (Chumped) and Mikey Erg (The Ergs!) reprise their previous roles. Wearing the producer/arranger hat this time around (previously occupied by Tyler Pursel of Gym Class Heroes and Seth Kauffman of Floating Action) is Jesse Miller, bassist and bandleader of “jamtronica” pioneers Lotus. If a punk/twee/hippie collaboration like this seems heretical to you, well, good. Mission accomplished.

It's not a mash-up, it's a new mythology

Vikings vs. Unicorns is a new comic book with a whole lot of rainbow-colored blood splattered across its opening pages, brought to you by rock and roller-turned-writer Jim Tramontana (Red Hot Rebellion, Spitvalves) and independent comic artist KC Anderson (Wafflecus). You've heard of alternate histories? Well Vikings vs. Unicorns is an alternate mythology, recasting everyone's favorite one-horned mythical icon of cuteness as a feral nightmare, endowed with immense powers and bent on destroying humanity. In the comic's impressively complex storyline, they are pitted against one of history's traditional villains, the Vikings, who are recast as humanity's grimly determined saviors.

But it's going to take more than just the sweet caress of steel to bring Vikings vs. Unicorns to print. With that in mind, Tramontana has teamed with the world's most comic-friendly record label, Florida-based Paper+Plastick, to bring you an eight-page preview of the premier issue as part of their Story/Song series. As the name suggests, the series pairs narrative comic art with music, something Tramontana is, of course, highly equipped to do; hence the moltenVikings vs Unicorns theme song.

The first Rentiers record, Here is a List of Things That Exist, wasn’t a total disaster, so Joel Tannenbaum (Plow United, Ex Friends) decided to make another. He approached Seth Kauffman (Floating Action) about wearing the producer/arranger hat this time around. Much to his surprise, Kauffman, an established session musician with producers like Dan Auerbach and Jim James on his resume, checked out the songs and said yes. On a very cold day in February, Tannenbaum brought Kauffman’s sessions with him to APT studios in Manhattan, run by his cousin, Jason Agel, to finish things up. Mikey Erg (The Ergs!) and Anika Pyle (Chumped) apparently didn’t think the first Rentiers record was a total disaster either, because they came by and reprised their previous roles. It was cool. Agel mixed the record expertly, adding coherence without reigning in Kauffman’s far-reaching arrangements, and the result was “Black Metal Yoga” b/w “Drunks and Stoners. Tannenbaum approached his former bandmate, Philadelphia tattoo artist Leta Gray, for the artwork, asking her to “design the logo for a yoga studio in which the teachers are only allowed to play Scandinavian black metal during classes.”  Now all that was left was to find it a home. Thinking “Eh, why not?” Tannenbaum approached his current favorite DIY punk label in the whole world, New Jersey-based Baldy Longhair Records, who heard the tracks and probably thought to themselves “Okay, this is definitely weird enough to be on Baldy Longhair.” Summer sped by, and here we are: “Black Metal Yoga” b/w “Drunks and Stoners” will be released on November 17, with 150 copies on black vinyl and 150 black and blue splattered vinyl. Baldy Longhair will release a cassette as well, including an exclusive bonus track and some additional features that will be super strange and maybe even disturbing for anyone who actually attempts to listen to it. “Black Metal Yoga” is, as the title would suggest, about doing yoga to black metal. It’s also about an insurrection on a Martian mining colony that spreads back to Earth. But it’s also about those things you do that make you happy, even if they are weird and don’t make any sense to anyone but you. One day those might just be the things that save your life.

Artist Bio

The Rentiers is a name for whatever kind of music Joel Tannenbaum (Plow United, Ex Friends) feels like playing, and whoever he feels like playing it with. In theory this could mean anything, like a record of calypso standards played by Joel, a disgraced Russian astronaut and a bonobo. In practice however, so far, it has meant Mikey Erg (The Ergs!) and Anika Pyle (Chumped), and a revolving cast of producers/arrangers that has included Seth Kauffman (Floating Action), Tyler Pursel (Gym Class Heroes) and more. In 2014, after two decades on and off in DIY punk and indie pop bands, Joel finally gave up on anything ever working out the way it was supposed to. He decided from there on out to ignore all of the rules -written and unwritten- about how to be in a band and how to make a record. The Rentiers is what that sounds like. It sounds pretty good.

You may recognize Rus Wooton as the Letterer of some of your favorite comics, like THE WALKING DEAD, BLACK SCIENCE, SEX, GØDLAND, EAST OF WEST, OUTCAST, THIEF OF THIEVES, INVINCIBLE, FANTASTIC FOUR, or a bunch of others from Image, Marvel, Dark Horse, and more. He's also an artist and a writer who loves HORROR, so he got some friends together, and they got some friends together, and they put together a horror anthology in comicbook form: over 75 pages so far... The scripts are done and the art is in-- just some lettering and design for Rus to wrap up now. The Kickstarter campaign launched today and is looking to raise funds for completing the first volume and printing costs to publish the book and share these dark stories and art with as many horror fans as possible.

Internet Adventure Superstar Adam The Woo Reveals Punk Rock Past

Solid Arts and Science releases Alias Clark discography.

You know him from his virtual adventure tours - of abandoned architectural mysteries around the continental United States, of legendary film locations, or maybe you know him as the guy who got banned for life from Disney World last year! Either way, Adam the Woo is from that strange new breed of "internet celebrities" and his adventures have him earned him YouTube views in the millions. But did you know that from 2001-2004 he was a founding member and bass player of Orlando punk band Alias Clark, touring, playing festivals and releasing two EPs to a small dedicated following before calling it quits? Well, it happened, and Solid Arts and Science intends to prove it by releasing a 10-song Alias Clark discography TODAY. Alias Clark was a tour de force of catchy pop punk anthems, rounded out by Jim Tramontana on guitar and vocals (now the bassist/vocalist of Dayton, OH rock gods,Red Hot Rebellion), Andy Wambach on drums (now of the internationally famous one-man punk band, Sit On It), and Matt Woodruff on guitar and backing vox (recently of Nashville's premier queer alt-folk rock outfit, Fuzz Face).
