Hey there anon. Reconnections like this are always hard. I know your family is Catholic, but if possible I would ask them if they could tell you anything just for the sake learning about your heritage. 

If your family is from East Africa, another suggestion would be reaching out to scholars at certain universities in East Africa or libraries that might have records, or be able to trace your family. 

Additionally, if you have close friends who’re also of your culture or from your area, you could cross reference information with them. 

Google and/or google scholars might be able to help you as well!

When you say that Judaism is "witchy," you're probably actually saying one of two things.

Judaism is an ancient religion, heavy in ritual, which helps our inner ("spiritual") selves feel a connection to the outer world. The emphasis on embodied practice, ritual, and connection to nature through cycles of agriculture and astronomy is grounding and affirming as a physical and spiritual being.

Judaism reminds us of "witchy" things not by happy coincidence, but because our concept of what witchcraft is has been filtered through the eyes of European Xian antisemitism. Our languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, Yiddish), the names of our heavenly beings ("angels," "demons"), and our rituals have been mixed with stereotypes about our appearance and behavior and antisemitic tropes about our connections with "The Devil," and repackaged as Magick™. The idea of what witches and witchcraft are in the Western world is riddled with appropriation and antisemitism.

I must premise that this is not my usual method of colouring, nor have I studied colour theory. So I don't think I have nothing new to add from the thousands of tutorials that are already out on the internet.

This said, I think that one of the things you should always keep in mind when colouring in a realistic style is this: skin doesn't have a uniform colour. This is best summed up by this picture, from a tutorial by Jacques Choi.

No matter what base colour you're working with, be it pink, brown or purple: skin should always have "warmer" tones on the cheeks and nose (where I think there are more blood vessels? Science side of Tumblr explain!), and duller, "colder" ones arounf the mouth and on the forehead. This doesn't have to be super evident for all skins (there are skins that are more "uniform"), but yeah, it's not just light-coloures skins that can blush or that can have patches of "cooler" tones around the mouth and the forehead.

In Essek's case I blended a bright magenta with his purple base to suggest "redness" on the cheeks/nose, while for the rest I went on to "sculpt" his face with a cool dark blue for the shadows and a lilac at low opacity for the lighting.
