Apropos of nothing I am going to make fun of one of Sly Cooperās contemporaries
specifically Jak & Daxter
specifically Jak 3
The first game is very bare-bones on plot, as a consequence of Naughty Dog just really making a more ambitious Crash Bandicoot. But it works! Good basis to build on. And Jak 2, famously, takes a hard swerve that also, impressively, works? Not every day you can see a franchise completely change genre on a dime, and the plot of that game is interesting and pretty nicely paced out.
Jak 3ā²s story is laughable. In that it, without hyperbole, makes me laugh
A lot of stuff happens in that game, a lot of it related to people getting exploded, but thereās one aspect of it that just - I canāt.Ā
Jak is an orphan, right? He was found wandering the streets as a child raised by his kindly old mentor rather than his biological family. All he knows is that heās apparently the heir to something
And then near the start of the game, he meets this desert king, whoās like, very masculine and serious but not without emotion. They work together and gradually warm up to each other, to the point of opening up a little, and
Jak saysĀ āGosh I just really wish I could find my parentsā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā
And the king is likeĀ āOh I can sympathize, I myself am searching for my long-lost sonā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦..ā
and they have this conversation like three times
and when the king lies dying in Jakās arms, heās likeĀ āplease oh please find my boy, he needs to get this amuletā and produces the same crest Jak was found with as a child and then instantly dies
and then and ONLY THEN does Jak put one and one together and wonder ifā¦. i-if he was actuallyā¦ā¦ā¦ h-h-h-his father?!
and the villain standing nearby is likeĀ āYes. Yes. Jesus fucking Christ obviously. That was agonising to watch. Like father like son I guess because the two of you are thick as a bag of goddamn hammers, fuckā
ā¦Basically what Iām saying is that if Jak was my favourite story to pick apart rather than Sly,Ā I think my life would probably be more frustrating.
I really donāt want to sound like a downer but I g e t i t game fre ak. When are we going to st op with the kanto pandering. Itās like each gen they call back to Kanto like āhEY GUYS, rrEmeMBEr KANTO?? ā like, oh my god, we g e t it. Kanto was great but u literally just re m a d e i t, re m e m b er.
The designs are good just give more of that to other pokemon PLEA SE.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SLY!!
So another change between Sly 2 and 3:
In 2, the flashlight guards were⦠well, somewhat easy to take down, actually. Sure, they had long-range attacks, but once you got close enough to hit them, they only took four hits from Slyās cane and each hit propelled them back a ways, stunning them long enough for you to follow up with another. So once you got that first hit in, the other three were kinda trivial.
In 3, on the other hand, they take ten hits from Sly, and they no longer even flinch from his attacks. As a result, fighting them head-on is much harder, which gives you a lot more incentive to be sneaky around them (which, you know, is what flashlight guards are for in the first place).
If I'm remembering correctly, you also get the Silent Obliteration much earlier, or Sly already has it in his tool beltĀ in Sly 3? Compared to like... Episode 6 when we get in Sly 2?
Silent obliteration is mid game for sly 3 (flight of fancy) late game for sly 2 (he who tames the iron horse) and early game for sly 4 (turning japanese)

Hi, this is still the most confusing, incoherent meme Iāve ever seen. I have absolutely no idea what concept is attempting to be conveyed here. Anyone wants to clue me in on what this is about, hit me up.
Its a storytelling meme.Ā A game has the pros from a film being that it can be told visually and can better give people watching/experiencing exactly what it means to convey, while also having the pros of books in that games can be incredibly long as they donāt necessarily have to be done in a single sitting.Ā Games are the superior narrative medium as it has the pros of both books and movies with the cons of neither. (of course games have their own cons, the main one being that if you suck at games youāll never learn the full story because you canāt get far into it lol)Ā
Games being a superior ststorytelling medium than movies and books is a WHOPPING claim and Iām going to require more than two paragraphs and a confusing meme if I am going to be convinced me of that. (And im going to open my counterargument with: maybe watch a few criterion collection movies, or read some classic novels)
Its theoretical. Ā Games have the potential to be better storytelling mediums than movies and books because it has neither of the fallbacks of length of movies or lack of concrete visuals for novels.. Obviously not every game is going to be an incredible storytelling masterpiece but the pieces are there for it to be one.
Where do comics fall into this mess
Theyāre between games and books. They have the lack of time restraint that books and games have, but they donāt quite have the same visual freedom that movies/tv shows and games have in that they are still images as opposed to moving ones, and they donāt have sound (unless its an online semi-animated comic)
I think youāre wrong on literally every single point here, but Iām going to have to wait till Iām off work to respond to this. I dont want to be snippy (short version is: comparison of art mediums on theoretical grounds has no place in serious discussion of art or media, unless youāre a tech bro trying to sell something)
Iām mostly playing devils advocate for this tbh. No opinion one way or the other, just putting the idea of what this image might mean, and the only thing these three mediums have in common is the fact they are story telling mediums.

As with a lot of things in Thieves in Time, the time machineās mechanics are an interesting idea that makeā¦ā¦ā¦.. zero sense
Okay. In order to travel to a given time (and place), you need an artefact from that setting. So the Gang needs to steal a feudal Japanese dagger in order to get to feudal Japan. Grand. Cool, even.
ā¦Except,
there is nothing about this object a bleep-bloop Science Machine should be able to tie to a particular Japanese village on February 5, 1603. The atoms in the dagger are just as old as the atoms everywhere else. The individual components - the iron, the wood - existed before the dagger was assembled. No, what the machine seems to be detecting is the human civilised action of crafting the dagger. The nebulous intention of creating an object with meaning.
Weāll leave aside the weird questions you can ask here (What if you broke the dagger, or fixed it, or significantly altered it? Replaced the blade one year and then replaced the handle another?) and focus on the bottom line. Bentley created a time machine thatās not only capable of analyzing objects and grounding them, through their craftsmanship, to a specific date - some kind of wondrous Museum CuratoraTron 5000 - but needs to do so in order to function. As opposed to, say, using a clock interface.
Doc Brown had this shit figured out in 1985, and youāre telling me Bentley couldnāt engineer something even remotely as straightforward?
I know this sounds like a nitpick, and thatās because it is. But itās been bugging me for years, and the answer I always return to isĀ āwho cares about the writing in thieves in time? clearly nobody involvedā
The Sly trilogy operates on stupid cartoon bullshit logic - which is why I love them! - but thereās nothing in them thatās this⦠finnicky.
Surprised you mentioned the dagger and not the tooth of the mammoth that just happened to have been alive at just the right time the grizz was stealing eggs. At least thereās some argument of plausibility of a samurai dagger connecting back to feudal japan but the ice age took place over almost 12,000 years. Heck, according to the wiki itās just a fossil necklace, so its possible it could have sent them back even further in time to any of the dinosaurs.
OFFICIAL Slytember prompt list!!
Mention me if you participate! Iād love to see your entries !!
Day 1 for @felicity-the-catās sly cooper drawing challenge. More of an idea sketch of sorts than something actually done because I canāt draw traditionally at all, its a lucky charm weilding cooper getting hit by a nuke and surviving. Might update when I get a tablet back

Tada.
@projectdestati there you go.
also @sapphiresandstarlight for the impala idea~ I like it a loooot.
I gave her more petitions paws, instead of the Zira route I was originally going to do. Sheās evil, but also somewhat dainty~
Considering sly 3 has a 3d mode, and sly 2 had a 3d mode in development for a while that got cut (and which modders may yet manage to reimplement), sony could probably make ports of those games for psvr pretty easy.
I mean, if they wanted to.
Also: the 3d mode in sly 3 apparently made the shift to 3d hd televisions without much effort, given that the ps3 version is apparently compatible with them (not that I've ever verified this), so it's not unthinkable they could make the transition to vr reasonably seamlessly.
And sanzaru seems to have followed up sly 4 with a long run of VR games (mostly oculus) which apparently sold well? I mean its relative here, since not many people own vr rigs, since vr is kind of worthless technology with regards to games, but apparently it did alright (the marvel license probably helped).
So sony would only have to be a *little* weird to greenlight a pitch like this. Not super weird.
(Not really sure why sucker punch was so intent on getting 3d modes in there--like, people actually have found early builds of sly 2 that have early versions of what ended up in sly 3 deep in code, so they'd been working on it for literal years. I guess the technology seemed so exciting no one thought to consider whether anyone in their audience actually wanted it.)
Thatās probably why they included it. Remember, they also had that microphone thing where you could make a sound in it and itād alert the guards of your presence.Ā
