i was expecting to dislike god friended me because i was suspicious that the show was going to be a direct push against shows like lucifer, and was only going to be christian propoganda but i’ve watched three episodes (going to watch the 4th rn) and i’ve got to say… while it’s something of a tear-jerker, there has been no ‘christianity is right everyone else is wrong’ sort of message. it’s fundamentally a show about people… helping other people. with maybe some help from ‘on high’ (or from what the show calls the ‘god account’).  the main character is an atheist. he’s black!!! his friend/love interest is white (interracial love interest!!!) his best friend is indian!!! his best friend’s girlfriend is indian!!! his sister is black AND gay!!! her girlfriend is black!!! these are most of the main cast!!! of the people they’ve helped so far, there has been a doctor struggling with suicide, grief, and purpose; a woman whose mother walked away from her because of addiction and their attempts at reconciliation; a mother trying to connect with her nonverbal autistic son; a teenage boy left alone and grieving after his mother went to prison; and a social worker’s husband who, like the boy, was struggling with the death of someone close to him. this is not what i was expecting from the show at all i really hope the show keeps doing what it’s doing now. some of the implications of the show are… downright weird and sort of alarming (ie god friending a guy on facebook and using his social media, in a way, to control him)… and i mean, facebook being a part of the show means that it, like most other sources of media, is not free of sponsorship but yeah, i don’t know. i guess i just like it so far. i was not expecting it to be so… inclusive
