Dude, I never told anyone to go to a psych ward. Reality shifting is a lie created by internet influencers to take advantage of the mentally ill. And CIA documents? Show them to me and maybe I’ll believe you, but I know you won’t come off anon. Idgaf if you don’t like me anymore. I’m not going to believe in reality shifting and I stand by what I said for reality shifters to seek therapy. It’s not bad to tell someone to seek therapy. I’m in therapy. And it works. I know enough about it to make my own damn opinion. And my opinion is that it is preying on people’s mental health in a great time of trouble and need for escapism. I’ve seen people get incredibly distressed over things they’ve done in these alternate realities. Some people want to stay there. None of that is healthy.
The CIA was throwing money at all sorts of BS back in the 60s and 70s, including psychics, remote viewing, mental “reprogramming” (which, incidentally, created the Unabomber as a byproduct), and an attempted assassination of Fidel Castro via exploding cigar. Just saying that the CIA funded it 50 years ago is not an endorsement of something’s credibility–and, at least IMO, should be taken as a strike against it.
honestly the scariest thing to me is that this is literally step by step how to start a cult. i got really carried away writing this so it’s going to be long as hell, but if you have time then i beg you to read it all the way through ESPECIALLY if you are a young person. with the current climate of social media and the rise of propaganda it is absolutely necessary to know the signs of high-control groups / cults and how to get tf away from them. i’ll put the bottom half under a cut, but i’ve included a ton of sources and info in that section so i recommend still checking those out!
social media has completely changed the landscape of cult recruitment. influencers are in positions of power over large numbers of people across multiple platforms, and parasocial relationships are pretty much just… normal. once they’ve gained trust it’s shockingly easy to introduce their audience to concepts that alter their state of mind; in this case they are literally convinced they have powers, and members will start to pull away from anyone who disagrees.
in my opinion, they follow what i call the ‘mormon cycle’ nearly identically. they go out and talk about their beliefs, defend them against the (predictable) backlash, and after being repeatedly rejected they return to the group to commiserate about the 'attacks’ against them. they will in turn receive praise, love, support, and validation from those around them; they become emotionally reliant on the group, and collectively reinforce their shared delusions. it’s interesting to me that they use the CIA documents as proof, all the while overlooking the original point of the research: literal mind control
manufacturing a trance or hallucinatory state of mind allows for near-complete control with relatively low effort, and contrary to popular belief delusions can absolutely be induced. while i think that to some extent most people are willing to be told what they want to hear, some are far more susceptible than others. these groups use heightened emotional states to foster abnormally strong bonds via shared experience; it doesn’t matter that the experiences aren’t real, because as a collective they will do anything to make them seem real. on top of that, they feel like they’re in on something secret or special; even better, that 'knowledge’ comes from a person they idolize and are emotionally attached to! (someone whose literal job is to influence people!!!)
one quick way to assess the likelihood of a group being a cult (or at least dangerously controlling) is by using the BITE model. examples include:
∆ Behaviour Control ∆
major time spent with group indoctrination, rituals, and/or self indoctrination, including over the internet
financial exploitation, manipulation or dependence (people are more than happy to give significant amounts of money to their fave influencer; this video re: donations via musical.ly is from 2018, and it’s only gotten worse)
instills dependency and obedience
discourages individualism, encourages group-think (many claim individuality as their beliefs differ from non-cult members, but indoctrination cannot allow for critical thinking)
∆ Information Control ∆
deliberately withholds information
distorts information to make it more acceptable
systematically lies to the cult member
extensive use of cult-generated information and propaganda including audio, video, youtube, movies, and other media
minimizes or discourages access to non-cult sources of information
misquoting statements or using them out of context from non-cult sources (the CIA documents are a perfect example)
compartmentalizes information into outsider vs. insider doctrines
∆ Thought Control ∆
memories are manipulated and false memories are created
requires members to internalize the group’s doctrine as truth and/or adopt the group’s ‘map of reality’ as reality
hypnotic techniques are used to alter mental states, undermine critical thinking, or even age regress the member
teaches thought-stopping techniques which shut down reality testing: includes denial, rationalization, justification, wishful thinking
rejection of rational analysis, critical thinking, and constructive criticism
forbids critical questions about leader, doctrine, or policy allowed; labels alternative belief systems as illegitimate, evil, or not useful
∆ Emotional Control ∆
promotes feelings of guilt or unworthiness such as identity guilt, not living up to your potential, unwise affiliations, and social guilt; thoughts, feelings, and actions are irrelevant or selfish
creates extreme emotional highs and lows
instills fear, such as fear of thinking independently, the outside world, enemies, or being shunned by the group
acts like there is never a legitimate reason to leave; those who leave are weak, undisciplined, unspiritual, or brainwashed by outsiders

I've said this before and I'll say it again: it's more important to know and understand fully why something is harmful than it is to drop everything deemed problematic. It's performative and does nothing. People wonder why nobody has critical thinking skills and this is part of it because no one knows how to simousltansly critique and consume media. You need to use discernment.
This is ultimately why propaganda is going to work on you. Because you never learned how to think for yourself and the actual ideology behind things. You simply rely on group think and the bare minimum explanations to tell you what's good and bad.
