dan being mad at arin is always such a treat

Dan's words zip around his head like a pinball machine before settling noisily in his chest and he swears the whole room must be able to hear them clanking around in there. It takes him a moment to realize that wait no, that's actually just his heart pounding.

He swallows the bite of apple still between his teeth before he can choke on it, throat suddenly dry.

As he clamps down firmly on the apple and presents it to Dan, just as he asked for, jesus christ, he expects it any moment now. The nervous laugh and the "What no- I was just joking Arin, oh my god!"

He anticipates it as much as the little sting of disappointment and rejection that he's almost gotten used to by now.

Almost.

But then Dan is hesitantly scooting closer and although he's making faces as if this wasn't his own idea to begin with, he doesn't stop until his shoulder meets Arin's.

Arin can't help the nervous laughter bubbling up, growing uncharacteristically timid as Dan's face gets closer and closer to his own.

As Dan leans forward the hoodie he's wearing, 'MY hoodie!' Arin's mind screams, falls open just a bit. Arin catches a glimpse of pink and wow is he glad he's sitting down.

He barely registers laying his left hand atop Dan's on the tiny space of bench between them, far too preoccupied with Dan biting into the apple.

Later though he'll remember clear as day that Dan didn't pull away.

He's genuinely startled when Dan makes eye contact. It's so brief he's sure that had he chosen that moment to blink he'd have missed it entirely. But there it is and there's something in the twinkle of Dan's eyes that's different from his usual playful mischief, and god does it make Arin's heart skip a full beat.

That look would follow him home that night. Set up camp in his head and his heart and his lap and make all three ache for days.

But for now he doesn't linger on it too long, not when he can feel the soft tip of Dan's nose slide against his. Juice, once tart and sour but now sweet, runs over Dan's bottom lip and around to Arin's side of the apple.

He envisions tossing the fruit aside and licking the sticky sweetness clean from Dan's mouth, until the only taste left is Dan.

But before he can let that fantasy run too wild, Dan is sitting back and mulling over his bite of apple, contemplating the flavor for the camera and oh yeah that's right. They're being filmed, aren't they?

Arin hopes his internal screaming didn't get picked up by the mics and tries to school his features back into his natural performer's mask.

He's so focused on his own appearance for the rest of the episode that he overlooks the little smiles and glances from his cohost.

It’s Okay to be Sad by @writergrump [EgoBang] - Arin shouldn’t be breaking down in tears, but it’s a wonder Dan doesn’t mind that at all. It starts to make you think in Arin’s perspective, I feel, and you can expect Dan to be the nicest shoulder to cry on.  

Armour by @musicalravencreates and his TransArin! AU [EgoBang/EgoFlap] - Arin, now transitioned, is still conflicted with his dysphoria, and both Suzy and Dan help him get through it. The whole AU is in verse fics, and it’s wonderful in both story and explaining some issues trans people go through. It’s just brilliant, and Andy’s great.

One by One by @okgrumps [EgoBang] - Suzy and Arin take some time apart from each other for her sake, and every other problem coming in isn’t helping Arin at all. Dan comes to his aid and may have another feeling than empathy for the younger man. Alex actually makes Dan give more advice than expected, so for anyone who’s dealing with issues themselves may take this more fondly.

Worthy by @sweetieships [EgoBang] - Dan submits to the dark thoughts in his head, but Arin does his best to chase them away. It gets really sad, and you’re probably gonna have the pit in your stomach for a while after reading it. It definitely is worth reading, though. (… oh dear what did I just say?)

Silver Lining by @grumpyhanson [EgoFlapBang] - Dan starts to fall for Arin and Suzy during their European tour and doubts himself, but the couple reassures him that it’s all right. It’s more of a confession trope, but the reassurance at the end is heartwarming.

You’re Okay; I’m Here by @sumide1711uu [EgoBang] - Dan has a panic attack and needs someone by him. It’s a short read, but it still taps into your heart.

You Weren’t Supposed to Laugh by @grumpletgirl [EgoBang] - They were just playing Mario, and Arin didn’t mean to break down this way. It’s another short read, and it’s not so angsty, but when you read it, it feels like it would happen in reality. 

It’s Only Tuesday by @spdrprkr [EgoFlapBang] - Arin is definitely not having the best day ever, but Dan and Suzy know how to help him let go of the anger. It’s not angsty, and it’s more like watching a sitcom episode and get to the part where the characters have a quieter moment to calm down and share their love.

Tired by @poppedparaz [EgoBang] - Arin knew that Dan had a tendency to overwork, so he had to be the one to help him rest. They’re very good with descriptions, and you can feel everything the characters are.

(i’ve had a number of requests to repost this, since i pulled it from ao3 a few months ago!  it was originally posted last april, and have been really heartened to hear how many people enjoyed it since it was taken down.  so in honor of april fool’s day, my take on Wake Up Married: 

It’s not like Arin’s never thought about it–him, Dan.  Arin’s had a few dozen thousand very gay thoughts about Dan, because Dan is Dan.  Dan’s not just unconventionally attractive, he’s hot, he’s scorching to such a degree that Arin would worry that if Dan actually got his mouth on Arin’s junk that all the ball hair would be singed off by sheer proximity. If Arin hadn’t met his soulmate at age fourteen, eyes locking across the crowded hall of an anime convention, he’d be the first to admit without any hesitation that Dan would probably have turned him totally, completely into a brunch-loving, pastel-wearing cock sucker.  Dan would have full dibs on his butthole, and there’s no shame in knowing it.
