its just so obviously different when someone is engaging in a convo about a female character because it's the polite thing to do and not because they have any investment in it. and normally that would be fine except this is something you have to deal with literally everywhere you go, no matter who the other people you're conversing with are. and you can feel the switch in interest so potently when women are the focus of the conversation versus men.

and again it's not really any one person's fault. but it's just so lonely sometimes ahahh

the thing is I truly just can’t let ronance go, every time I think I’m normal about them I remember literally any detail and I’m obsessed all over again. The most canon non-canon couple ever genuinely. Everything they do from the moment they start interacting just emphasizes how good they are for each other. And then you get into everything in the books, the barb between them, the shared yearning for something more than Hawkins that no one else understands, the juxtaposition of Robin vs Jonathan in one way or another and who’s really a good partner for Nancy, in every sense of the word. Like. It’s been four years and every once in a while I still stop and think holy shit they’re so good together

I bought myself a working Realistic Micro 15 tape recorder and I wanted the Russian message to go on it, but found that clean audio didn't exist of it online! With the help of @hollowshadowwolf I cleaned up the audio as best as I could in Audacity and put it together with the Daisy Bell music (timed with it's first appearance in the show in episode 2).

So if you too want to make a working prop or if you want to make an edit or something, here's the message with both music and no music. It repeats once so the music can play though the whole thing.

Howdy! Do you perchance still have the list/screenshots of what cassettes are on Nancy's nightstand? Asking for a friend. ;3c

Unfortunately I didn't see this until I got to work, so I only have a couple off hand I can add here now. I don't think I ever definitively identified the bottom 3 fully. I have a list of best guesses. Ultimately in the chapter where that scene happens I went with what I thought fit Nancy for the time and some future plot things (based on posters and other context clue plus her general arc) so I settled on Jennifer Rush (the top tape, will show you in a moment), The Beatles (tied in to the comments later about Karen singing Beatles songs to her, so they're sentimental to Nancy), Blondie (she has their poster/calendar in her room) and The Cars (part of me was thinking of a few specific songs when I picked this one but could easily swap for The Bangles or Madonna). I wanted the second or last one badly to be a Eurythmics one in reality because I feel like Nancy would be very into them/Annie Lennox too (We Two Are One could possibly fit one of them potentially even, if one squints just right lol)

I also figured out some of fhe books that were under the tapes/on other shelves. I can send you updates when I am home BUT:

The top tape is absolutely Jennifer Rush's self titled album.

honestly one of my favorite things about fanfic is when you can see the canon influences come out in really subtle ways. like a canon line thats mentioned once as a throwaway is suddenly the entire premise for a fic or it influences the characterization or something. its just so cool to see how people weave their ideas around a source material, especially if its not a detail i'd thought about before

#bonus points if a fanfiction acknowledges a contradictory detail about a character and explains it in a satisfying way #robin buckley switching from french horn to trumpet you will always be on my mind
