Got the go-ahead to start posting stuff so here are some Alucard studies I did in SBPro when I was trying to get the hang of drawing these guys
Storyboarding Trick?
In storyboards you can’t animate out everything but for a demo reel or a short motion where you want the movements to ‘flow’ better there is a certain trick you can try on programs on Storyboard Pro or Photoshop.Â
Lets start with this:
This is just a rough board snippet of a guy punching air. It feels kind of choppy. It is made up of 8 unique drawings.Â
But if you take a drawing of the punching guy and using the select tool you transform skew/translate/rotate/ certain parts of his body you can get this:
And the timeline looks like this:Â
But I didnt draw any more unique drawings because I just slightly modified the existing 8 unique drawings. Transform an arm slightly and that is enough to fool the brain into bridging that big gap between two animation frames. Even moving the arm slightly down like in the picture below is enough to get this effect.Â
In Photoshop just use the lasso tool and transform the selection but the vector drawings on SB Pro make this a lot easier.Â
***For actual production work I would not try this because boards are always scrapped or changed and trying this can lead to frustration down the pipeline during the revision stage.
If you want to try this out just for fun or for your portfolio demo reel I highly suggest trying it out since if done just right they can really make your boards flow better panel to panel. Have fun!
Gotta have that bow, man.Â
The Castlevania Opening Title sequence is officially up! This opening in particular was a special passion project for us, as we wanted to create an opening that encapsulates the feeling and themes of the show along with doing something visually exciting in the vein of opening sequences we at the studio admire.
The opening was also done by a small crew of us in an incredibly short period! It was spearheaded by me and @SpencerWan with help from @dannyaraya and @adamdeats in just about 3 weeks. I hope folks enjoy it!
Fun fact- I stayed up for three days straight to finish this and then burst into tears at my desk.Â
I drew the orange crap.
Everyone at Powerhouse put a ton of blood, sweat, and tears into making this project the best it could possibly be because they really, really gave a shit about doing justice to a franchise they love, and it shows.
Working under the extremely skilled Samuel Deats, Adam 'Adam Deats' Deats, and Spencer Wan has taught me a lot, and I specifically want to thank Sam for giving me opportunities to expand my horizons in ways I'd been passionate about but hadn't had the chance to try, and for helping me along the way. This post is getting dangerously cheesy so I'll just end it by saying I'm so grateful they let me play a small role in bringing this thing to life and the experience has been and continues to be incredibly rewarding.
Thanks and congrats!

Putting the cast in Castlevania.
There are too many terrific contributors to this series, not the least of whom are these wonderful, freshly-announced actors:
Graham McTavish is Dracula Richard Armitage is Trevor Belmont James Callis is Alucard Alejandra Reynoso is Sypha Belnades Emily Swallow is Lisa Matt Frewer is The Bishop Tony Amendola is The Elder
Castelvania premieres on Netflix next Friday, 7/7/17.
Yahoo’s sale to Verizon means that Yahoo’s sub-companies — Flickr, Tumblr and a host of others — are now divisions of a phone company, and as you might expect, being on the …
Maybe it’s time to leave Tumblr.Â
Being a storyboard artist and director ruins things you love since you can’t unsee continuity and hook up issues.
I should probably stop drawing busts and draw characters actually doing stuff
In darkness, a hero returns. Castlevania comes to Netflix July 7.Â
