Undertale Headcannon: Temmie and the Tem Village
So, I was browsing the internet, and I discovered this picture. Unfortunately, I donβt know the artist, only a link to Pinterest.
The Tems here look a lot like Sphinxes, a mixture of Greek and Roman mythos. And, not to be a really big surprise to anyone, I love me my monsters. But this got my gears turning in my head, based upon what we know of the Tems, and their role in the Underground.
They run their own village, are really successful business owners, and can go to college and graduate within a really short time. But when the human (AKA the Player) shows up, they act all stupid right? Jokes, memey things, and acting like giant house cats as tall as the player.
As far as we know however, the majority of the Underground are not descendents of the monsters who first went down, but the original settlers and their families. So, it wouldnβt be too surprising that if the Tems are Sphinxes, that they would remember this (I believe I read that they had sharp memory and wit in the Greek tale, but I could be mistaken). And for the ones that can go to college in a day and graduate, Iβd take a serious gander that they would remember that humans are in love with cute things.
And as such, that would expalin the safer behaviors that they display. Thereβs no place to battle a Tem. They live in their isolated village, friendly and perceived as stupid by any invading human. But behind it, lies a facade of one of the smartest races in the Underground that plans on survinvg, whether a Genocide run or a Pacifist playthrough.
Also, Iβm gonna mention @tyrantisterror, as heβs one of the best monster afficinados around, and this seems to be something right up his alley. If thereβs anything else that could be added or countermeasured for such an idea, Iβd trust him to do it.Β
Tl;DR: Humans are known to be dangerous, and they act the way they do to survive being slaughtered, therefore hiding their intelligence from the rest of the (at least human) world as the most interesting side characters that we never paid attention to.
