âPeterâŠâ Iyazâs eyes were wide and wild. His entire body tensed, throat tightening and he couldnât seem to swallow. He turned his head again. Spinning, as if a new angle might enable him to hear better.
âItâs Peter. Itâs him. I swear it.â He blinked. Looking at Dani and yet not really seeing them. He finally managed to swallow. His eyes finally focusing on Dani, pulled back from his faraway look by the present. If it werenât for Daniâs question Iyaz might have never moved or run straight toward the fog. âPeter is- I donât know if I mentioned him, heâs my fiancĂ©.âÂ
Iyaz, or course, could have sworn he told everyone on the island about Peter by now. Peter came up naturally in his everyday conversation. Like Tomas and his Libby. Except his conversations with Dani were always focused on other things. The importance of rest, work around the island, even today. It was mind boggling to him that in that time Peter had not come up, mind boggling and guilty. That Peter could slip from his life like that, without notice, as more islands slipped in.Â
âYaz. Yaz where are you. I canât see anything.â
âThere!â Iyaz perked up. âThere it is again. I know itâs him itâs his voice.â Iyaz reached out to grab hold of Daniâs arm. Tugging them forward. âHeâs here. Lost in the labyrinth. We have to find him.â
~~~
Daniâd never seen Iyaz look like this and they werenât quite sure what to do. They were coming to realize that with the whole doctor-thing and good-advice-giving-thing, theyâd kinda put Iyaz up on a pedestal and werenât quite sure how to get him down again or offer any kind of comfort. Who was Peter? Should they ask? Or would that make it worse? It unsettled them to see Iyaz so discombobulated and they werenât exactly on sure-footing about that.Â
But they did know the Labyrinth and had to say something.Â
âItâs not.â Dani said softly but they could tell Iyaz was somewhere or some time else. The surprise came when Iyaz seemed to pull himself back out of it and refocus on Dani and their surroundings. âFiancĂ©?â Dani blinked for a few moments trying to wrap that around their head. Iyaz had said âhimâ. As in, two same-gender people. Getting married? Openly?Â
Suddenly, they wanted to jump in the fog and find this miraculous other person too. Shit. Had things changed that much?Â
Before Dani could comment on any of that - Iyaz was perking up and reaching out again, clearly hearing something Dani couldnât and fuck, they didnât want to do this. Would it be kinder to let Iyaz try for a bit? Or would it just be worse knowing Daniâd let him go on a foolâs errand? Biting down on their lip, they tried to weigh the options quickly, but none of their options were kind, and there just wasnât time.
âIyaz.â They started softlyâŠâThis is the Labyrinth.â
Maybe that wasnât making sense to the plane-survivors. âIâm so sorry. There is no boat. No light. No people to match to the voices. Itâs all tricks. Illusion. I know you donât want to hear it but ⊠thereâs ghosts all around me. People Iâve loved. People Iâve hated. People Iâve lostâŠtheyâre all here. You canât hear them but I can just the way you can hear your Peter but I canât. Itâs meant to draw you into the woods - into the water - anywhere away from us and safety. Please donât let it.â
Dani hesitated before gently tugging Iyaz back towards their path. âCome on. We gotta focus on the people who are here. But if it helps - feel free to talk about Peter. And if you donât want to talk about him - when did it stop being illegal? Being with someone who looks like you on the surface? Or I can talk. Tell you more about the tricks Iâve seen over the years. Or about the people I hear. JustâŠtry not to focus on him, if you can.âÂ
