So we all have heard of internally homophobic light but rn an au hits different where he's just on the aro/ace spectrum and genuinely lacks interest in anyone BUT still tolerates and acknowledges the possibility of liking the same sex.
I know that in canon, of course originally Death Note is quite misogynistic and these themes of Light regarding women as lower than himself are intentional to an extent. Thus supporting a queer narrative as a possibility that many have humorously and genuinely taken on.
I just like the idea of a universe where he's like "Maybe I'm queer, maybe not, I could hypothetically accept any demographic, but all of my peers I've met in life so far are just so fucking stupid and unrelatable I have yet to find someone I'm genuinely attracted to".
And I think Light would have a little crush on L at first but not bother to acknowledge or feed it initially not only because he prioritizes professionalism, but also thinks oh he's not gonna even consider me as an option cause he's older, and if I can hardly stand people my age there's no way he'd give that a chance.
I may say Light did have crushes and interests growing up and throughout his adolescence but he hardly followed through out of not seeing the point of a relationship.
Light would probably feel physically sick from realizing how attracted to L he ends up being. Why do my guts form knots when he's close to my side, why does my heart jump when our eyes lock, why do I want to find any excuse to casually touch or get closer to someone technically holding me captive...
On one hand he's like... Really? This guy?
And on another, he melts at the sound of L's voice using a gentler tone after several hours of straight work. He leaps at the chance to lightly shove L's shoulder at his dry jokes. When he's looking elsewhere and L is around, he secretly hopes he'll turn to find those eyes on him - and most of the time, they are. He tries to act casual enough to rest his head on L's shoulder, and his stomach flips giddily at how they fit together so seamlessly. When the bed sharing turns questionably intimate, Light even latches onto the scent of L: his fluffy hair and freshly laundered clothes.
We can't pretend L doesn't notice. And I'd like to think he subtly encourages and reciprocates. He leans his head back on Light's when it's on his shoulder, he even reaches around to stroke Light's far arm. He likes watching Light and seeing how long Light will take to notice - just to glance away immediately, suddenly and discreetly more bashful toward L in particular than at the start of this case.
I'd like if they had some kind of conversation about attraction and Light admits he doesn't really care for a particular gender or type personally but that most of his motivation engaging with women more is because of their surrounding culture and what his parents expect of him.
And then of course L has to offer Light's first gay makeout session and the homo identity crisis takes off from there!
