“Timeworn Tales” by Danielle Trudeau

I love elephants. In my mind they are old souls, with tales to tell and wisdom to share. Plus their wrinkly faces are super fun to illustrate. I've always loved working with paper dyed with tea, it creates amazing colours, textures and patterns. This time I dyed an 11x14 sheet of bristol and adhered it to a 1/4" thick piece of masonite, and it feels so much better than plain paper. Adhering it to the masonite gives it more weight, not to mention prevents the paper from wrinkling. Once my paper was fixed to the board, I went to town with various ink pens and then used brown watercolours to add some depth. I'm super thrilled with the result, I can't wait to do more. I'm hoping to create a little series of animals on tea-dyed paper.

Sometimes you just have the urge to paint a certain subject. You feel some sort of connection to the elements, though its hard to put words to what those feelings are. I knew my elements were to be a tiger, some gorgeous peonies and a uniting darkness. I've always been drawn to darkness, it has an elegant sort of mystery that appeals to me.

I'm still trying to dig through the emotive symbolism and extract my own little personal meaning for this one.
