Seeing people who barely know anything about epic literature saying that Agamemnon is cool and attractive because of the Odyssey film is infuriating
That man is a fucking power hungry snake and Nolan made him look powerful for the dude bros who jerk off to powerful men. Realistically, Agamemnon was never that cool and literally had a fit because Apollo made him return a slave girl back to her father and proceeded to take Briseis (Achilles' slave girl) for himself. He's a man child. Also, he's a greek man who raped and ravaged the lands he went to, including the slave girls and Cassandra.
I've seen so many people calling clytemnestra a bitch for killing him. Motherfucker, that man killed her first husband and child, killed his own biological daughter and even in his death got his own children to turn against their mother (that was their decision and the gods but still, he has blame)
Don't say dumb shit about Agamemnon to me, that man deserved his death and more and a single movie where he does nothing but walk silently and complain about being too comfortable when you get home isn't going to change that.

Something that really bugs me about The Odyssey is how the story was just not at all understood by Nolan or the actors.
Yes, I think we all understood his vision of the gods being natural occurrences, but I think this is just rubbish. What's the point of adapting a story old thousands of years old, with a completely different belief system that influenced characters of the said story and actions of REAL people as well, if you're not gonna be faithful to the original story?
Ancient Greeks envisioned their gods as people, and yes, they may not have been real, but The Odyssey as is helps us understand our ancestors and people in antiquity, who we can credit with the evolution of our societies today. Having Odyssey be almost atheistic in the movie defeats half of the plot. Not having Zeus or Poseidon show up in a human form, but having Athena, who is played by Zendaya, really badly at that, be present is ridiculous. And don’t get me started on the relationship between Odysseus and Athena, which is based on her guilt-tripping him???? He is supposed to be her best student, for whom she literally influences the plot.
Also, completely removing the "I am Nobody" part from the story genuinely kills his cunningness, strategic mind, and trickery that he is very much capable of in the poem. And how does Poseidon know who to curse and call misfortune upon if he doesn't know who Odysseus is??? Odysseus's name was basically the social security number of their times!!!
I also hated that they didn’t show sirens. Instead we get a minute-long video of Odysseus crying and wailing, accompanied by Matt Damon's horrible acting since the guy is just not Odysseus material.
This whole movie felt like one celebrity name here, another there, and a third one somewhere because they accounted that people will come watch the movie for the actors and not the story.
Okay so after rewatching the movie (perks of working in a cinema), I cannot let go of how much everything looks cheap.

Also the weird ass political messaging they're trying to go for, just does not work with the odyssey. Pick what you want your work to represent, don’t go cherry picking what you want and don't want. There are more creative ways to tell your anti-war message with all the necessary elements of the Odyssey still in tact!!!!
nolan’s odyssey is such a textbook study on the idiocy and dangers of presentism. yes of course penelope is a modern day feminist who wants to rule ithaca by herself. they make telemachus say that GREECE IS THE GREATEST CIVILIZATION IN THE WORLD as if the entire point of the massing of achaeans at troy for one unified cause isn’t spectacular precisely because THERE IS NO CONCEPT OF A UNIFIED GREECE NATIONS DO NOT EXISTTTTTT YETTTTT. literally 101 on historical writing is making sure that you’re avoiding strict periodization because the people living in a “period” will not identify themselves that way. ever. five million cheeky nods to “the sea peoples” but we’re being cute and coy and calling them “the people from the sea.” the obsession with xenia but refusal to call it xenia yes let’s say “zeus’s law” a hundred times and reduce it to the literal expectation that any stranger could be a god in disguise. how was penelope just hanging out in the main hall of the palace with her husband’s dinner guests while they were playing with weapons with her HAIR COMPLETELY DOWN no veil no nothing just chilling casually. comical. stoppppp making movies that engage in historical viewpoints if you’re going to slather a modernized coat of paint over the top. “the past is a foreign country, they do things differently there.” or fucking whatever.
the odyssey (2026)
Just saw The Odyssey movie last night. Don't fucking watch it that was a solid 4/10
As a movie, it was alright, but as an adaptation of The Odyssey? Miss me with that shit
Here's some of my biggest issues with it:
They took away everything about Athena that made her Athena. Not once did they show her in moments of wisdom or strategy, they just made her a symbol of Odysseus's trauma from the war, which would be cool if it was someone else, but THAT'S NOT ATHENA.
Where the fuck were the gods?? The epic is about a man whose story is heavily influenced by the gods as they help and harm him. You can't have The Odyssey without the gods. And yet, there was no Hermes, no Poseidon, no Zeus, no Aeolus, only Athena. And she pretty much only shows up as a HALLUCINATION. THEY TOOK THE MYTHOLOGY OUT OF A MYTH. If you wanted to make a movie set in ancient Greece that leaves the existence of the gods up to audience interpretation, make an original movie, don't put that onto The Odyssey!
They just???? Added an island after Polyphemus and before Circe where a bunch of figures in armor sink two of the ships???? Genuinely what was that even for??????? Did Christopher Nolan not think there were enough fights or something????
EDIT ON THAT LAST POINT: @canarycurses and @greatspacedustbin pointed out that these were the Laestrygonians, who were in the original Odyssey. Still weird that they decided to keep that part though
WHERE WAS ODYSSEUS'S TRICKERY? The whole thing with Odysseus tricking Polyphemus and using the name "Nobody" just didn't show up. They wanted to make a movie about a man's mistakes and their consequences, but didn't include the biggest one????
Just the way all the women were portrayed irks me. More on that:
When Menelaus is introducing Helen, he says "The face that launched a thousand ships", but then he gestures to a scar on her face and says "Or maybe now, just five hundred"???????? HEY SO WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT FOR.
Circe was done SO DIRTY. She lived alone, in some sort of little shack, and they made it LOOK LIKE they'd explore her trauma more, but instead of fleshing her out they just spent way too long on the scene with her turning the men into pigs. They also made it some weird body horror scene where she was stretching their skin and tearing out their hair as part of it? Maybe that's some people's thing, but I think it went on way too long. They gave SINON more development and screen time than Circe.
See all my complaints about Athena. What was that.
Calypso was just a plot device for Odysseus to tell his story. They also added in some bullshit about her getting him addicted to lotuses to keep him on Ogygia and cloud his mind so he'd forget the 13 years before he arrived? What was up with that??
I can't speak much on Penelope. I'm pretty neutral on her.
There was a whole thing with Odysseus and Penelope wanting to sail off into the distance and leave behind Ithaca. I have no fucking idea what that was for, or why they went through with it in the end.
They also tried to intertwine it with history by saying that the seafaring peoples that raided the Mediterranean and may have caused the end of the Bronze Age were actually Odysseus and his crew????? What????
Lots of talk about "Zeus's Law", or the idea of xenia, but it becomes clearer and clearer throughout the film that they're just using "Zeus's Law" as a buzzword that they explain too many times and don't even capture the real meaning of.
Overall I feel like they movie-ified it too much, if that makes sense. Don't watch it.
The question is, if you’re so hellbent on your protagonist being ‘too cool to believe in the gods’, why would you go for adapting greek mythology in the first place?

like i get the angle nolan is trying to do for the odyssey (2026)-war is bad, don’t do war, just live a peaceful life with your wife blah blah blah-but it’s just the most boring interpretation you can have of the odyssey in my opinion.
the odyssey was not a moral punishment on odysseus for war crimes, it’s a punishment by the gods for him being a prick. i find the story of a guy who by all accounts should be beat down by the gods constantly get out of it and try to get around them. and of course finally capitulating and being rewarded, but before that being a really badass cunning guy.
the odyssey (2026) strips away everything to tell a pretty standard war story where we have a very honorable stand up guy who regrets his war crimes and is being punished for them.
also the gods are just weirdly depicted in a very christian way where they really care about mortals when in greek mythology they’re way more careless and unconcerned unless they’re bothered specifically-like the entire trojan war was started by the gods???

any conversation about who could play odysseus well (as opposed to the obvious terrible choice matt damon) is inane, in my view, because it’s already been done and served by toby stephens of maggie smith’s son fame in an acclaimed yet underwatched show black sails under the name james “flint”—

Now that everyone is discussing Nolan's Odyssey movie, I feel like it's a good time to let non-Italians know that the production dumped plastic props into the Italian sea. Weirdly enough I could not find any article in English about it but it's a fucking problem nonetheless.
