❝   people who are in love are stupid enough to go back to a girl like that.   it just means you love her and wanted it to be different this time,  and that’s okay.   i don’t blame you.   ❞      cady had nearly done something similar when aaron’s mom told her him and regina were back together again.   (  ‘ they say it’s serious this time. ’   his mom explained with a small,  almost sad smile that said she knew how she felt.   cady had only smiled in response,  played pretend and acted the part of supportive friend.  )   with her phone in hand and a mixture of jealousy and betrayal running in her veins she’d written a long text to the no - brainer who’d fathered mia years ago,  but something had stopped her from pressing send.   it wasn’t him she wanted to be with.   it was aaron,  it had always been aaron.   if only she had figured that out a little sooner,  then maybe they’d be together now.   not stupidly in love,  like aaron said,  but happily in love.   but if that had happened,  then mia wouldn’t be here,  and cady would never wish for a life without her in it.   not to forget that aaron might not feel the same way         his heart is clearly with regina.

          the words she had once used to ease the pain of admitting she had deceived   and lied to the only person who’d ever seen the real her and decided to stick around,  he now uses against her  &  the words’ abrupt appearance force her to tilt her head downwards in shame.   guilt flows through her veins,  seeps through her skin and clothes until it all but covers her head to toe.

stupid in love.   a laugh tickles her throat,  threatens to roll off her tongue and echo off the walls of the apartment.  it’s a phrase that fits her as well as it does him,  for he is as much of an optimist and blue - eyed as she is,  always running head first into every matter of the heart.      ❝             you’ve always believed that people can change for the better.   that doesn’t mean you’re stupid,  aaron,  it means you have a good heart.  ❞      this boy here is her twin soul,  and this is a fact cady has known ever since she was a little girl.   now if only she could summon the courage she had back then …

he halts; making sure that he’s got her full attention. he’s exhausted, has spent the entire night wrapping gifts for their friends, & getting ready for holiday festivities. he’d bought her a present this year - with his own money: a silver necklace, that just jumped out at him when he walked by the shop. something about it had reminded him of anya’s smile & the way her nose crinkles up in the cold -- there’s nothing more that he wants than for the two of them to grow old together.

literally the best ships

she’s only known him a couple of days,  and  yet.  she can imagine her life with him  —-  they could move to  new york,  with sofiya.  they could get an apartment,  stay far from her husband.  for once,  she could be safe and happy and feel  love  for another man.  she shouldn’t say it,  should tell him the truth,  and yet she can’t help it.

she looks at him,  for half a second,  before turning her gaze to the area around them.  ‘  je t’aime.  ’  and she imagines a world where he might say it back.  where he might  mean  it.

he echoes. he’s almost certain he’s heard this phrase before; maybe on a tourist t-shirt or something. 

❛  and that means it looks like it’s about to rain? ❜ 

here she was,  pouring her heart out to him,  begging  for a final chance,  one she knows she very well doesn’t  deserve.  and yet,  his rejection feels like a sharp knife in her chest.  she deserves this.

‘  you  ——–  you don’t,  i suppose.  ’  such a statement  pains  her.  ‘  i don’t know how i can  prove  to you that i won’t leave you again.  and i know it’s a lot of me to ask,  but i  beg  that you trust me  ——-  just give me  one  chance.  one chance to prove that i can be  better  and if you decide you don’t want it or don’t….  if you don’t want  me,  i’ll go and you’ll never have to see me again.  ’

he wishes he had time to think, to process it all. up until an hour ago, he wasn’t even sure of anya’s whereabouts. didn’t even know if she was still alive, or how she was doing. and now, here she is, in front of him - asking for his forgiveness. he knows, in his heart, that he can’t be mad at anya for long. if he’s being completely honest, he probably started to forgive her the minute he saw her on the bridge.

he repeats, this time, a little more sure - he wants this. wants to fix things, to see how things would be between them if they had just communicated properly. he owes it to the two of them to try. 

‘  you’re the  best,  dima.  ’  he’s her  best friend,  but there’s something else,  just beneath the surface,  something that reminds her of being younger,  being  close  to him,  just inches away  before an interruption scared her away. 

she raises her brow at him,  can’t help the hints of  laughter  that escape her.  ‘  so then,  maybe i should find some  other  handsome con - man  &  trick him into getting me to paris,  couldn’t i  ?  i’m definitely  beautiful  enough.  ’

he all too readily agrees. pauses. didn’t mean to say that -  now finds himself wishing that the ground would just swallow him whole. he’s a little too charming, too flirtatious with most people they meet - almost to the point where it’s insincere. things that are all good in this line of “work”. but with anya, it’s never been just flirty, just teasing - always a hidden undertone beneath it all.
