Instead of a cutesie reference to film censorship it was an explicit statement of defiance of Maryland's criminalization gay sex, which was not repealed until 2002. This wasn't a guy saying "Oh they can't put what I do in the movies according to a completely voluntary industry code" he was saying "The State of Maryland wants to put me in jail for being gay and having gay sex."

i’m imagining kara being inconsolable without alice, her stress levels not being able to come down until she actually *sees* some proof of alice being alive. alice being interrogated would be extremely confronting and difficult for hank- connor doing his tried and true flip-flopping between being a calming adult presence and being an indifferent wall with a mission to accomplish. i imagine the second persons and the very act of pretending would be the trigger flip for hank

Also, if they had to talk about them, it'd be an occasion to bring up Hank's son as a reason to why he's affected by them in particular

You know, an actual chance to learn it that isn't tied to finding about it yourself in an easily avoidable scene where you can miss it due to looking at other objects first and running out of time.
