âOkay...â
âIâm sorry if this is awkward but you looked sad and I just wanted toâŚare you okay?â
Iâm fine. Just got a lot on my mind.
You do not believe in ghosts.
âNo, Gabriel repaid me by waiting until I turned around to shoot me,â Russell replied. The focal point of his own rage rested in his eyes. They harden to steel and his lips drew into a thin line. As Jez spoke of keeping the alliance and Foster Etheridge he nodded respectfully. It was a good move, and it was even better that Hamptonâs nephew agreed to remain an ally. As Jez began to speak of what happened after his death he watched her intently. His features clouded at the mention of Georgie Calhoun. Not so much the fact that his body was more than likely mutilated.
Heâs expression softened with concern, âGeorgie Calhoun as in your friend? I thought he skipped town, went to school or something, never mind either way he did not. He was not involved at all. They set him up, and did a damn good job, but no lone wolf killed me.â
The past rebel leader reached over the coffee and squeezed her shoulder, briefly. With a light frown he settled back into his seat and glared. After a few seconds of silence he looked back at Jez and frowned, âNever invite any of the hunters to camp, Jez. Due to some people disliking Gabriel I invited him during training and when the younger ones were at school, less people to see him. Less chance of a fight. It was a dumb decision on my part. I was too trusting. If you plan to negotiate with any of them do it outside of camp, be armed, and have people with you. Donât make the mistake I made.â
âWe all thought he skipped town and went to school. Little did we know, none of us were right.â Jez sighed loudly. Georgieâs death had yet to hit her fully. Heâd been gone so long that the news didnât really seem real. It seemed more like one of the many rumors of what he had been doing that occasionally circulated the town. There always seemed to be more important things for her to be worrying about. She knew the news of his death had hit Farrah hard, but it was clear to her that Farrah wasnât ready to talk about it. So until then, it was more thing that Jez was forced to shove to the back of her head.
âIâve never fully trusted the Hunters. Their goals are different from ours, which is why we donât fit well together in the same town.â The overwhelmed feeling Jez had been holding back for weeks began to wash over her again as Russell squeezed her shoulder. She fought back the tears her body had been at war with as she looked at him. âI donât think I can do this with out you.â She did her best to make sure her voice didnât crack but it still came out rough. Here in that unfamiliar living room she felt less controlled. There was no one around to see her cry, which made it harder to stop.
You do not believe in ghosts.
âThey think that the wolves killed me?â Russellâs brow furrowed and a muttered curse came soon after. Rudi smiled. Even the rebel leader knew that the idea was preposterous. The rebel leader scrubbed a hand over his face to regain composure and glared at nothing in particular. His jaw worked as he considered what to say Jez. As she mentioned the hunter leader the glare deepened and snort of laughter escaped him, âGo figure, Cooper gets himself killed after he killed me.â
Russell sighed and glanced at Rudi. The witch gave a slight nod, reassuring him that it was best to tell the truth. Russell unconsciously placed a hand over the spot the wound once was, âI thought it was time to call a truce between the rebels and the hunters. It looks bad for the cause to have rebels and hunters, humans, killing each other. I wanted an agreement to stop raising our arms against each other. Rebels that wanted to work with the hunters could, and those that did not were to be respectfully left alone. Cooper did not want that, said he could not promise such a thing. I turned my back, as far as I was concerned we were done talking, turned around, he said something about me being in the way, and then there was the shot.â
The glare deepened and he turned it onto the youngest rebel leader, âWhat I want to know is how in the hell are the wolves being blamed for it? As for Marcus, the first thing you need to do is make sure your alliance with the Hamptons remains, the access we have to their side of town has helped keep the camp running. The supplies have kept the platforms among other things safe. They are instrumental, so you need to explain to me why the rebels actually think a werewolf is responsible for my death.â
âThose bastards,âJez muttered. Everything was fitting together in her head now. Nothing had been making sense because she hadnât even considered the hunters being responsible for Russellâs death. âSo you went there to try to make peace and they repaid you by shooting you when your back was turned? After all we did to try to help them stay under the radar?â The rage flared up hot and fast. Jez had tried to help them. Sheâd given them information. And they killed him. Killed the last person she considered real family. Teeth clenched together, Jez made an internal vow to ruin them.
So Russell didnât know about Georgie. She had figured since he was a ghost he had been watching. Taking a deep breath, Jez made an attempt to smooth her tangled curls away from her face. âIâve already talked to Foster. Him and I are kindred spirits in a way. That alliance will stay for as long as I can keep it.â Jez bit her lip before she spoke. Telling the story about Russellâs death to Russellâs ghost was not something she had ever intended on doing. In fact, she hadnât thought about it in depth, for fear of not being able to hold it together. âThe police called it an animal attack. Then the hunter brought a dead wolf and dropped it on the steps of the station. It turned out the bite marks on your-- body,â Jez stuttered over the word, fighting to keep her head a little longer. âmatched the bite of the wolf. It was a lone wolf. And the wolf was later identified as Georgie Calhoun.â
No, it isnât, but how do you know he left town? Before he was at Dorianâs, he could be somewhere around here.
Like you said, itâs not like him to do things like this Jez, trust what you know. Heâll reappear. Blackwell is a family guy, even if he is out of town heâll come back for you and everyone else.
He should have talked to me. We could have avoided this.

Oh yeah I missed you. Just like an abuse victim misses being hit.
Iâm sure. Be nice. You are rooming with my best friend. I can convince her to prank you horribly in your sleep.
You do not believe in ghosts.
Rudi watched from the side with careful eyes. He forced himself to remain focused on Russell, he could feel the power seeping from himself at a slow rate. So far the spell was going as planned. Both Paddington and Dom watched their guest with guarded eyes, unsettled by the shift in the atmosphere.Â
Russell frowned at the sad smile, and shook his head lightly. Rudi knew that this man was more of a father to this child. Fatherâs did not like to see their children suffer. The former rebel leader shifted in the seat, and shook his head. His jaw clenched and unclenched before a sigh shuddered from him. âThatâs my girl, itâll get easier. Running things as you see fit, youâre ready, even if you think youâre not.â
With a light nod he gave her a gentle scolding, âYou stay away from Gabriel Cooper, you do not try to make a deal with him. Heâs not interested in a truce. Not all of the hunters are like him, but the ones that are will be of no help to you or anyone else. Theyâre enemies.â
âIâve basically been handed a war because everyone thinks the wolves are responsible. I donât even know how to run things as I see fit right now.â Jez laughed mirthlessly. Who was she kidding? She had no idea what she was doing. The last few weeks she had basically been winging it.
âGabriel Cooper is dead, Russ. And so is Marcus Hampton. I donât trust the hunters as far as I can throw them, but Iâve made an alliance with Foster Etheride. Heâs the new Hampton alpha.âJez took a deep breath. Sheâd come here for answers and she intended to get them. âWhat happened Russ? None of what Iâve put together makes any sense.â
I can understand that, Jez. You have more people looking towards you now more than ever. That probably doesnât help what youâre feeling but as a witness to your fearless leadership, I know youâll do fine.
Youâll lead the rebels and youâll make your father and Russell even more proud of you. I know it.
Yeah, I know and it makes me want to crawl under a rock and hide so that no one can find me.
Iâm starting to think I canât do it by myself.
Iâm sorry, Jez.Â
Heâll come back, he came back before. Heâll come back again, trust him in that. Even though you donât want him to feel bad, he probably does, and heâll have to get past that on his own.
He didnât leave last time though. He was still here. He just wasnât sure if I would accept him as a vampire. But he doesnât do that anymore. He doesnât just leave because things get hard. Itâs not like him.
How can I not let it fear me when I break stuff so much easier? Iâve ripped doors off the hinges more times than I can count, and these enhanced sensesâ itâs too much. I know I can talk to you guys, I know, but all I can remember is that fucking carnival and being attacked, only to wake up in a hospital and they couldnât do anything for me. I thought I was going to die, Jez. Hell, I kind of wanted it from the shit I went through with the change. It was the hardest thing Iâve ever been through in my entire life.
You turn that fear into motivation to learn control. You want to not be scared? Re-learn who you are. You are still you, youâve just changed a little. You arenât dead. Far from it. Use it to your advantage. You donât have to be a contract anymore. You can do whatever you want.

Why would he be beating himself up, and running away?Â
This about the carnival, isnât it? He was forced to feed?
He attacked me. Â I donât blame him. The spell made him do it. But after I woke up in the Ashdale house and he was gone. I havenât seen him since.
You do not believe in ghosts.
âWell, then, please take a seat,â Rudi gestured to one of the empty chairs in his sitting room. With a light sigh he began prepping. While it was possible to summon without materials, the process went faster and was less demanding if the proper materials were utilized. Given that there was a need for answers he figured it would be best to use them. His hands reached for candles hidden inside drawers, and a tome book hidden inside a china cabinet. Efficiently he began to light matches and let the wax begin to burn. He gave Jez a light smile, of what he hoped was reassurance. Paddington watched from the hearth and ruffled his feathers, Dom whimpered and went between him and the girl nervously. After filling a bowl with water from the kitchen he returned. A few droplets dribbled onto the coffee table, âStay very quiet, summoning is very precise, if something obscures me it may not be heard.â
Rudi shook his shoulders and thought of the very first spell his mentor ever taught him. His hand went into the bowl, the water lapped at his wrists, and his eyes closed. The candleâs lights would make a path for him to see, the water that brushed at his wrists was the barrier to reach through. Immediately the trance appeared and the spell left as easy as breath. The words were whispers, and all at once the air began to chill. His shoulders began to tremble, the connection was being made, his energy was being forced into another. Dom let out a light growl. As the name dripped through the air, he felt a slight pull back to the realm.Â
âRussell Jacobs.â
The spell was complete, and just like that the candlesâ flames disappeared one by one. The water in its bowl went still, and it was as though a sigh went through the room. Across from Jez and to his side a man between the ages of forty and fifty stared back at them. Blue eyes sharp, and his demeanor surly.Â
âDo you know where you are?â Rudi addressed first. Russellâs eyebrow rose.
âOf course,âhe replied with a light nod. His gaze went to Jez. A light smile tugged at the manâs lip. âI was hoping you would believe him,â Russell said with a light incline of his head, âHow are you, kiddo?â
Jez watched Rudi, her awe only marred by the sharp anticipation and fear she felt. What she was doing terrified her. Witchcraft and things like that were not things she had ever thought she would be messing with. But then again there were a lot of things that she had done in the last year that she had never thought she would have to do. She felt strangely calm considering she was about to see someone she had thought sheâd lost forever again. She knew that it was partially business, but it was also selfish of her. She wanted to see him. She hadnât gotten to see her dad one last time after he died and she wasnât going to miss out on getting to say a real goodbye.
Her breath caught in her throat as he appeared. It happened in a flash but she could feel the change in the room. She felt safe. Safer than she had since she found out he was dead. For a moment she closed her eyes and just let the feeling take her over. Momentarily, she forgot why she wanted Rudi to summon him in the first place. But Russellâs voice snapped her back to reality. âI almost didnât believe him, but I was getting desperate.â She said with a sad smile. âIâm holding up. Nothing is good though. Nothing at all.â
You do not believe in ghosts.
Yes, the time may vary. It has been sometime since someone has wanted me to perform this, but I can manage your asking questions for at least twenty minutes.Â
You are sure? I only feel the need to ask a final time because some are not ready for things like this. It can be very upsetting.Â
I can handle it. If I can handle him dying in the first place, I can handle seeing him again. I didnât get to say goodbye and I just need to see him.
You do not believe in ghosts.
Yes, I can call him to come to the realm, if needed enough of my energy can give him form. You could see his face, if you would like that.
I could also force him, but I usually prefer not to do such things. Itâs not polite. Are you open to the idea?
I could actually see him?
Iâm open to it. Iâm definitely open to it.

You do not believe in ghosts.
If you are open to it, Russell can be spoken to.Â
He is the one that would probably be able to answer with the most honesty. I say probably because some do not remember what happened.Â
You could actually contact Russell?
You do not believe in ghosts.
Wait, what are answers you looking for, young one?
There are others that may be able to provide them.
I just wanted to know what happened. Iâm sure youâve heard about the animal attack on Russel Jacobs and how they think Georgie did it. I just want something tangible that actually makes sense.
