Couple weeks back I created quick Sonic photobash concept piece in the wake of the controversial Sonic look in the trailer and the consequential Internet reaction to it. I never played Sonic games, couldn’t say I’m a fan either but I always liked Sonic for his power, super fast running, cos I like and I practice running my self. So that’s kinda my connection to the character. I saw this as a nice opportunity to challenge my self and get out of my comfort zone in the process. With all that above I decided not to stop on the photoshop concept but instead continued to build entire character in 3d.

This is a finished redesign take on the Sonic character. I personally think something like this would work well in a movie environment as a realistic and plausible character.

Sonic is an anthropomorphic hedgehog. I tried moving away from the original iconic cartoony proportions and I tipped it more towards humanoid side with regards to anatomy. Almost like a costumed cosplayer. Regarding Sonic height, I like versions of Sonic where he was portrayed taller, putting my design at around 1. 55 meters height or thereabouts. Here’s a quick rundown on some of the more significant changes and design decisions: - Shoes are completely redesigned and I shaped wording “Sonic” into the side of the sole - Just like the original Sonic, my version has gloves which are equipped with composit padding to help Sonic avoid injuries as he’s blasting around ar supersonic speeds. Movie version Sonic might be impervious to road rash, mine is not. - This Sonic has suit. I dont think naked furry Sonic works so well in realisitic environment. Movie Sonic felt lile a plush toy for that reason alone. Then again, depends what genre the movie is. My design is aimed at darkish sci fi thriller . Not a family advemture comedy movie. Suit is some type of tech kevlar fabric padded with rubber composit coat. Inner thigh section has hexa cells that generate electricity and magnetic properties through friction as Sonic moves and runs, enabling Sonic to run on some vertical surfaces. The ribbed suit design is not done by chance. It’s inspired by “Sega” logo. Anyway, these are some details I wanted to point out… I’m really pleased how it turned out. Final composition is inspired with wonderful art done by Ry-Spirit.

This is an alternative version of a movie poster for an alternative universe. I like movies, I like movie posters, so this only came naturally. I wanted to create some sort of fan art movie poster for one of my favorite movies. I asked my self bunch of questions. What if someone else directed Jurassic Park? What if it was filmed in early 80's? What if it was a horror and not a sci fi adventure.? Completely different film, but it still has Jeff Goldblum in it :D Click the title for more closeup images.

“Dinosaurs In The Wild” is a virtual theme park style experience that takes visitors back 65 million years to the time of the dinosaurs. About 20 something illustrations were created while I was working on site with Milk Vfx crew. My responsibilities for the project were to create number of concept visuals which were then narrowed down to particular pieces. These were then pushed forward at a production level quality. For the procedure we used existing dinosaur models to pose them and light them. Finished dinosaur renders together with countless photographic elements were blended into final seamless illustrations.
