Macaque and Sun Wukong were friends, but, according to Macaque, he was forgotten and overshadowed by Sun Wukong
What's really clever is that even when they were friends it's visually communicated that Macaque was Sun Wukong's shadow - he's literally behind him and in his shadow
We can see here that Macaque and Sun Wukong can both make clones, so when Macaque made clones in season 1 episode 9, it wasn't just because he took MK's powers
When they were friends, Sun Wukong had the tightening band on his head - so their friendship happened, and possibly started, whilst Sun Wukong was a disciple of of Tang Sanzang, and we already know (from JTTW) they were enemies before Sun Wukong had his tightening band removed.
Even when Macaque was disguised as Sun Wukong, his face marking was still present. It could be nothing, but I think it could be important considering his minifigure has two different face markings (and in the intro his face marking looks more like Sun Wukong's; his clones' face markings also look like Sun Wukong's)
And the biggest thing: Macaque can hold Monkey King's staff.
Macaque holding Sun Wukong's staff is REALLY significant. No-one can hold it except Monkey King, and MK, but only because Monkey King have MK his powers (not including Red Son because he held it with that magical glove). Why would Macaque be able to hold it? He was just a friend of Monkey King's, right?
Except, I don't think he was.
Macaque has the same powers as Monkey King (albeit with a shadow twist), he can hold Monkey King's staff, he even looks practically identical to Monkey King, except in darker colours.
Macaque literally says, in this episode, 'as the hero's light grew, so too did his shadow'.
In JTTW, it is heavily implied that Macaque is literally evil side and made from him. This isn't obvious or really present in English translations, but apparently this is the widely and commonly accepted belief/interpretation in China, and considering the obviously talented and knowledgeable Chinese consultation team we see in the LMK documentary, there's no way the LMK crew doesn't know this (btw, I'll reblog this post with information on this with sources and stuff).
Anyway, back to notes... Macaque clearly feels hurt by Sun Wukong and doesn't actually want to take over the world or anything. He could've easily defeated MK, but he didn't. In his play he doesn't portray himself as evil, he feels betrayed and hurt and sees Sun Wukong as the person who wronged him - he even tells MK that Monkey King is a horrible teacher.
Macaque expresses desire to actually continue being MK's teacher, and even warns him that 'something is coming'
The fake major sneaks up on Macaque and he is scared. The fake major then puts Macaque in a chokehold, and takes the lantern, and presumably Macaque. He is captured by WBS.
All I have to say is that Sandy is super powerful and clearly has some powers (he might actually really be Sha Wujing), and Spider Queen is almost certainly WBS's final ingredient - this shot of the Bone Mech projection has something that looks suspiciously like Spider Queen's head or helmet thing.
