Ineffable time

It consisted of an alien intent, of theories and strings, yet within it lived a will, and it grew. It was not unfathomable, for it was not the Design, yet it was measured with difficulty—it would require five dimensions for it to be contained within the world of objects.

It had lived for millions of years; it witnessed the explosion of the first star and heard the first breath of the first creature that raised its head from the waters and stepped for the first time upon the dry land.

It dwelt within the ancient whale, and the primeval bird, and the cavern unicorn, and within other beings. It dwelt within the giant dragonfly. It descended to Earth again and again, and once it dwelt within a human woman. It preserved the memory of human times, words, and shells.

When the command resounded, it was bodiless; it spread its wings and descended into the abyss, wrathful and ready to fulfill the decree.
