The Third Base Position

If you ever wonder who is one of the most accurate and strongest throwers on the baseball diamond while watching a game, the third basemen should probably be at the top of the list and if not, close to it. They have the responsibility of making strong and lengthy throws with accuracy on a consistent basis. Professionals like Manny Machado of the Baltimore Orioles may make the position of third base look tremendously easier than it actually is but don’t let that fool you as an aspiring player will need years of training and practice to even have a chance to come close to that level of play. The position of third base is mostly a reactionary position. When a pull hitter is at the plate and has the type of pop to hit a screaming line drive or grounder in the general area of third base, the third basemen must be prepared to play the ball as they see it with a quick decision to drop step, charge the ball, or shift left or right towards the way the ball is hit. An important tip to take in account when at third base is once a decision is made to play a ball that is hit to the position, stay with that decision and follow through. Indecisiveness is what will lead to costly mistakes that could affect your team in a close game.

Another thing that should be taken into account at third base is the frequent use of only one hand which is the glove hand whereas at second or short stop, you will see players use two hands mostly because of the positioning they are in. Baseballs hit in the general area of third base will mostly consist of soft ground balls or choppers and hard hit grounders with crazy hops as well as line drives. As stated before, because third base is such a reactionary position, the use of one hand will be frequent because there is simply no time when making the plays and thinking too much at third base will only lead to errors. Because not everyone can have the skills to make miraculous off balance throws from third base like professional baseball players, it is definitely important when making the “mile long” throw across the diamond to first base, that the players feet are set, weight is shifted and balanced well with their eyes dialed in to the first basemen and their glove and a strong, confident follow through when the ball is released on a throw. These are the keys to an accurate throw from third and the same steps could even be applied on a throw from third to second base. The Sacrifice Fly

As a hitter, getting a base hit or hitting a home run isn’t the only way to produce in baseball. With the sacrifice fly, which is a situation for the hitter with runners on second base or third base and even first base depending on the base runners speed with less than two outs, is an opportunity for the hitter to drive in runs without getting on base and is considered the most productive out in baseball. This is the type of play that will get you a high five from your teammates and manager even though you were on the way back to the dugout. Of course, a base hit still trumps a sacrifice fly in any situation in baseball and is what any hitter is trying to achieve but the option of the sacrifice fly gives the hitter the a bit of ease at the plate to avoid overthinking about what the pitcher is going to throw them next. Because of the sacrifice fly, the hitter can do their best to swing for the fences while at the least hitting it to the outfield from mid to the deep part of the outfield so the runners can advance a base as well as to home plate to score a run. The key result you want to avoid during a sacrifice fly opportunity is a strikeout, especially when there is only one out in an inning because that then takes away the option of the sacrifice fly and adds a little more pressure on the rest of the lineup to get a base hit in a two out situation to produce a run in what could be a close game. To hit a sacrifice fly, a hitter must be prepared to seek fastball throughout the at bat. That is the pitch besides a hanging curveball that would best produce power for a hitter to sky the baseball to the outfield. What is different about the sacrifice fly rather than an rbi groundout is that a rbi groundout actually counts as an at bat for the hitter whereas a sacrifice fly does not count as an at bat on a hitters stat sheet. It all depends on the intent of the hitter in the situation to determine what counts as an at bat and what doesn’t and a sacrifice fly usually seems like the hitter isn’t trying to put the ball in play but instead trying crush the baseball with the intent to move the runner up a base or to score them.

The Catcher’s Position

Ever wonder what the keys are behind a pitchers dominate start or performance? Well believe it or not, it really starts with how the catcher can keep the pitcher composed, how well they know the scouting reports of each hitter, and how well they can call a game behind home plate. A catcher who has proved to be capable of all aspects of catching at an elite level would be Jonathon Lucroy who received his fame through the Milwaukee Brewers but was acquired last season by the Texas Rangers in a late season, playoff run. The Rangers not only went after him because of his hitting success but also for his ability to defend and call a game for a pitcher behind the plate. This is the position in baseball that can change a game entirely, whether it’s the flow of the game or the intelligence of the game. The catcher is required to be thinking the most on the field. It is their job to know every situation, each and every sign from the manager to give back to his infielders, and in most cases what pitch to call for a pitcher and where to place his glove for the pitcher as a target. If a pitcher and a catcher have solid chemistry together and seem to work well with one another, that could be just as important as anything towards a shutdown performance from a pitcher because his catcher knows exactly where he likes to pitch to against certain hitters and they know together how to get them out. To be above the rest as a catcher, a cannon of an arm is required. There will always be base runners who will try to steal at any level in baseball so a catcher must work on his arm strength any chance they get with resistance weight lifting, throwing drills and long toss. With preparation and the right amount of training, a catcher will be gunning down baserunners in a hurry whether it’s a throw to second or third. Runners will eventually know that their chances are slim of arriving safely to their desired base.

It is also important for a catcher to be well aware of who’s at what base and if the runners are looking away and paying no attention to them because than that would be a great opportunity to fire one down to whichever base the runner is at in effort to catch them sleeping and pick the runner off. Defense is another huge aspect of the position. The ability to block breaking balls as well as keeping them in front and at arm’s reach is a part of the dynamics that consist of a great defensive catcher. Tag placement for a catcher receiving the ball at home plate is key as well, especially because it may lead to a game deciding run. When catching the ball in a play at the plate situation, the catcher knowing where they are around the plate and the trajectory of where the ball is going to arrive is the first part of executing the play. The second part is receiving the ball cleanly, staying out of the base path to avoid catcher’s interference, and applying the tag on the runner with two hands to avoid the ball coming lose before they touch home plate. The Short Stop Position

The short stop position is one that requires great leadership skills, an outstanding ability to take initiative and just about the best defense on a baseball team. The short stop is a very difficult position to play and requires the type of player who isn’t afraid to have the ball hit their way as well as someone who won’t break under pressure when the game is on the line. Of course all players aren’t perfect and make occasional errors but it’s the player who makes the least amount of errors and knows what to do in every situation that brings out the best in them. The short stop is basically the captain of the infield just like the center fielder is the captain of the outfield. If the shortstop calls a player off on an infield pop fly, it is the short stops ball as a way to take miscommunication that leads toward an error out of the equation. Not every player is going to have the talents of Derek Jeter, the hall of fame short stop that is now retired from the New York Yankees, right off of the bat. It takes years of speed and strength training, practicing the fundamentals, and mental preparation to have even a slight chance to make the major leagues at the position.

A great drill to practice as a short stop to increase accuracy is to have soft hit ground balls towards the player and have them charge the ball at a decent speed with a runner in place high tailing it to first base. This will give the player a better idea of decision making at the short stop position and to know whether to set and plant their feet and make a throw at full strength with a higher percentage of accuracy or to pick the ball up on the run preferably with their glove even though the best players in the world are good at bare handing the ball and to fire away across the diamond with no time to set their feet. This drill is a viable way of increasing a player’s arm accuracy while creating better judgement of defending baseballs that are hit on the ground. Most professional scouts believe that the range of a short stop can really make or break the player. Range is known as their ability to throw the ball to bases with great accuracy no matter where the player is on the diamond. Whether a shift is called that has them in a different spot on the field or a ground ball sends them deep into the hole towards third base. If they have time to throw the runner out depending on the runners speed then the short stop should be able to showcase the type of range that they have. If your greatest desire is to be a shortstop at a high level than be prepared to have long days and even nights shagging ground balls and making throws because it takes just about all of a player to achieve greatness and set foot on a major league diamond. The Curveball

While the fastball is usually the primary pitch for most pitchers, nothing can keep a hitter guessing like a well-executed curveball. If it has the break a pitcher desires than it could very much be close to unhittable. There are several different types of breaking pitches in the new era of baseball but the most common one would have to be the curveball. This is a pitch a pitcher can really dominate with like Yu Darvish of the Texas Rangers uses his 12/6 curveball or his slow, 60-70 miles per hour, curveball to pile on strike outs at an elite level. It is well known that if a pitcher doesn’t follow through with the ball all of the way or give it enough spin, it can be about the easiest pitch to hit in baseball. This is known as hanging a curveball which is very well a mistake pitch.

To throw a curveball and have success as a pitcher, make sure your mechanics are at their best. This includes how a pitcher would throw it out of the wind up and the stretch as well as their leg kick and delivery of the pitch. The pitchers hand placement on the ball consists of their middle finger resting on a rounding seam of the ball with the index finger right next to it and bent as well. The pitchers thumb should be on the opposite side on the other rounding seam of the ball and right it against it as well. The remaining fingers should be bent inside of the palm using only three fingers to grip the baseball. When going to the set and delivering the ball, the pitcher should dial in their eyes to the target of the catcher and when releasing the ball, breaking or flicking their wrist and using the fingers on the baseball to push off of the seams to give it that added break and curve in the air. Some pitchers love to paint corners down in the strike zone with the curveball but other pitchers like to throw it as a junk pitch that drops off of the table looking like a strike most of the way but arrives as a ball. It all depends on the consistency of the location a pitcher can throw it to. Although it may be easy to describe how to throw a curveball and the steps to do it, being able to execute the pitch in a desired location throughout the strike zone can be extremely difficult if the prior preparation and practice didn’t help correct a pitchers mechanics so with comfortable mechanics and strong location, the curveballs percentages of success should rise immensely. The Knuckleball

The knuckleball. It is just about the most complicated pitch in baseball and the hardest to execute but when done well, it can baffle hitters to the biggest extent and can even make them lose their footing. This pitch isn’t a traditional pitch on a pitchers repertoire because of the success rate for outs, but some pitchers like the Boston Red Sox’s Steven Wright use the knuckleball as their go to pitch and have some of the most success doing it. It is a pitch that should have little to no spin to have the potential to move the way that it does to completely throw off hitters and make them look plain senseless. If it has even a slight full rotation or more than the pitch becomes a batting practice fastball that hitters will feast on and that’s why the knuckleball takes years to perfect. It begins with the pitcher either digging their nails or top part of their fingers with the index and middle finger on a side round seam of the baseball with ring finger and pinky resting on the side of the ball. The thumb is placed underneath with a similar placement to the index and middle finger. These finger placements are extremely important to achieve the desired success with the knuckleball as it is one that requires mastery and an immense amount of precision.

When throwing the knuckleball on the mound, take in mind the velocity of the pitch isn’t the strength of it, but finesse of the pitch is so stay with a comfortable delivery that is consistently getting the ball over the plate to receive result. If a pitcher is unable to even remotely control the knuckleball, it can be a catcher’s nightmare. The pitch is already close to impossible to command but if it is all over the place, the catcher won’t even have an idea where it will end up behind the plate and will result in pass balls and wild pitches. For baserunners, the knuckleball velocity is about as down tempo as a pitch can get in the major leagues so they immediately know it is a great one to steal second base and even third base on. What this means for the pitcher is to either increase the speed of their delivery to home plate to throw off base runners and/or to constantly keep track of baserunners with the throw over to keep them at bay and closer to the bag to prevent the steal. Even though successful “knuckleballers” are harder to come across of these days, it is definitely possible to ride that pitch all the way to the major leagues if mastered to live the dream of a big league pitcher, even if it isn’t the normal way. The Keys to Situational Bunting

The importance of a successful bunt can be tremendous. If a player can bunt successfully for a base hit or a sacrifice, it can be ultimately game deciding. It starts with knowing what type of player you are, if your strength is speed or defense is your forte and hitting is secondary. These are the type of players who should become very familiar with the bunt and the type of bunting situations that they are put into because the manager will most likely be giving them the sign to drop one down. Bunting situations are usually easy to recognize and are definitely optional depending on the coaching style of the manager or who is at the plate.

A sacrifice bunt is best to be placed when there are less than two outs and there are runners on either first, second or both to try to advance them up a base. There is also the suicide squeeze play that is seldom attempted today but if executed well it turns into a scoring play most of the time. It is where a runner is on third base with any amount of outs in the inning. The runner will break home from third at the right moment but it is up to the hitter at that point to successfully bunt the ball in play preferably as far from the catcher or the pitcher as possible. The best way to bunt is to be closer to the plate and further up in the batter’s box, this is so the hitter has an easier chance to put the ball in fair play rather than bunting it foul. It is important to be in a comfortable stance with the back foot on the inside part of the box and further up than the other foot, the front foot out and towards the back where the majority of the hitters weight will rest, and knees bent a little more than they would be in a regular hitting stance. These fundamentals are important so that the hitter can easily see the ball make contact with the bat and will be able to maneuver the bat to the optimal contact point to place the ball down either line, or in between the pitcher and the first basemen or the pitcher and the third basemen and letting running speed down the base line do all of the rest. Remember, when bunting, the hitter can actually strike out if the ball is bunted foul with two strikes so be sure to know how to adjust and read pitches when down in the count to stay alive.

Keep your hands when holding the bat in the bunt position closer to your body but far enough out that plate coverage is full. Hold the outside hand on the handle of the bat and the inside hand a little under the barrel with four fingers underneath and the thumb placed on top. Definitely avoid having your hand too far out on the bat because this could easily result in the ball plunking you on the hand and that is a feeling any long time ball player could tell you to stay away from at all costs. These steps on a proper bunting stance work for either a sacrifice or bunting for a base hit. The only difference in the two from a form stand point is to be more precise on where the ball is being placed on the infield when bunting for a hit. Although being an extremely great bunter isn’t something that will carry a guy to the big leagues, it is definitely something that is worth being good at and could result in your number being called upon in major situations. The Aspects of First Base

The position of first base can be challenging but with much practice on fielding ground balls, hand eye coordination, and digging baseballs off of the dirt, it is definitely possible to master the position. Listed below will be a bullet-ed step-by-step instructional guide on how to play first base.

Ready Position

· Make sure your body weight is shifted evenly with your legs planted in a wider than normal ready position.

· Have your throwing arm and fielding arm both in a ready position that is as close to the ground as possible while standing that way.

· Keep head up, eyes forward and dialed in to home plate while a pitch is being delivered by the pitcher.

Playing Defense

· When fielding the baseball on the ground at the first base position, make sure you continue the ready position to keep the ball in front of your body in case it takes a wild hop to create a better chance to stop it.

· Second, Use two hands as the ball lands in your glove to keep it secured and to make it easier to shift into a throwing or running position.

· Also know what base to throw to depending on the situation, and when to throw to a teammate covering first or just to run to first to step on the bag.

· Next, know when to be the cutoff man, usually the first basemen will cut off a ball in the infield that is being thrown to home plate if they see a play that is more realistic to make.

Receiving the ball at first base

· This is where a first basemen’s hand eye coordination must be completely prepared.

· When receiving the ball that is fielded on the infield from another player, it is key to be aligned up and pointed towards the direction they are throwing from.

· The foot of the first basemen should be on the corner of the bag and in a pivot able position where it is easy to move around when reaching for the baseball.

· If a ball is under thrown from an infielder, the first basemen should be prepared to catch the ball on a hop so make sure to keep the glove close to the dirt in the position the ball is coming from and eyes dialed in on the ball as this is the best way to approach snagging it. NOTE: it is not always guaranteed that this will work because the ball may take a wild hop.

Stealing a Base

You don’t necessarily have to have lightning fast speed to snag a base at any level baseball. It certainly does help to have speed like Billy Hamilton of the Cincinnati reds but of course that isn’t the story for the majority of players today. There are a list of steps to follow that will help improve your chances of sliding into second, third or in rare cases home plate with normal speed. It begins with knowing the situation of the inning, whether you drew a walk or smacked a base hit, it is important to know how many outs there are, who is pitching and if they are left or right handed, who is at the plate, and how strong the catcher’s arm is. Usually, your manager will give you a sign that is a green light to take a bag but if you feel the time is perfect to run and you are more than confident you will be safe than by all means, full speed ahead.

As a base runner, the early lead off can make or break your jump towards the base you are attempting to steal. Keep your eyes dialed in on the pitcher’s delivery as well as if their foot comes off of the rubber. When it is a right hander and you are on first base, the pitcher has to step off of the rubber to throw over but with a left handed pitcher on the mound, they have a pick off move that is trickier to determine if the ball is being thrown to first base as their back foot actually doesn’t have to leave the rubber. As the pitcher progresses into their delivery to the plate, a secondary lead off can be obtained, giving an advantage to a runner to determine whether the pitchers delivery is on a pace that you believe is good enough to run on. When you are stepping off of the bag to get a lead make sure that you are shuffling your feet side to side instead of crossing your legs. That leaves you exposed to the pitcher and could easily lead towards being picked off for an out. It is also important to be towards the back of the base path so if a throw over from the pitcher occurs it makes it easier for the runner to slide towards the bag reaching a hand in on the back corner of the bag. This gives you more time to recede as the first basemen would have to reach even further to apply a tag. When at a full lead before you take off towards the base of focus to steal, make sure your weight is evenly distributed so you are prepared to take off and steal the base or return on pickoff move.

Timing is just about the most important thing to stealing a base, leaving even a half of a second early will turn into a rundown depending what base the pitcher throws to. This usually turns into an out if the runner is caught leaning and taking off to early. Whenever a runner sees the first movement of the pitcher delivering to home plate that is when it is time to hit the gas. The best way to get a quick start towards the base of focus is to take the first step towards the base in front of you with your left leg when standing sideways on the base path. It is much quicker to use that leg than stepping with the right leg as that sets you back a step. Overall, being intelligent, aggressive, and confident with a positive mindset are huge keys to stealing bases. The Art of the Fastball

Trying to learn how to blow pitches by hitters at a mesmerizing speed? Than definitely stay tuned because this lesson is just what you may need as an aspiring pitcher. To have the type of fastball Aroldis Chapman does for the Chicago Cubs, it will take years of training, practicing and development to even have a chance to reach the speeds he does, and even truly, a God-given talent to have that type of arm speed would probably be needed as well. To begin this long haul of development, a comfortable form and release point is a great way to get started. As long as the form you decide to stick with is one that you are the most confident that will create the most success for you, than you are well on the right path.

Gripping the ball consists of a bit of a loose feel and two fingers on the seams of the ball with your thumb on the bottom, not too loose though as that could result in poor command. With that slightly loose feel for the ball, it allows easy release and accuracy for the strike zone. How you release the baseball is just about as important as any step. The ability to let go of the ball in the right spot helps increase speed in combination with the snap of your wrist when letting go of the baseball is what generates back spin which is part of how the ball creates speed in the air. The more back spin the ball has, the faster it will go. When throwing the ball from the pitcher’s mound, it is extremely important how you shift your body and weight. When the leg kick occurs towards home plate, the back leg you are using for balance needs to be the leg that you generate power with and that depends on how you push off of the mound with it. The combination of a timely push off the mound and a full follow through can be devastating for the hitter as that is where the pitcher gets most of their power from. The next step which is what it all comes down to is arm speed. Some people think pitchers can throw the baseball very hard by having gigantic muscles and that is actually false. In fact, the pitcher doesn’t want overly large arms because it could affect arm speed and slow down the movement of the arm, which results in the ball moving slower. Arm speed is all about a fluid motion that the pitcher develops through years of resistance training and just throwing the ball around. If you can master a solid arm speed, the ball is definitely in your court for having a dream-fulfilled baseball career. All of these steps pieced together are what it takes to master the art of the fastball and if they are done correctly, than you might find yourself clocking in at 101 miles per hour on a big league mound in the ninth inning with the game on the line. The King of the Outfield

Playing the position of center fielder can be full of surprises, you just have to be well-disciplined, and know enough about the game of baseball to know what to do in those certain surprise situations. As a center fielder, the nickname “King of the outfield” comes from how the position is played and being in charge of quite a handful in clutch defensive situations, like calling off the left fielder or the right fielder if the ball is close and you are certain you will make the play. It is also the center fielder’s obligation to back up the short stop, second basemen, left fielder and the right fielder when the ball is hit their way.

Being the king of the outfield means having a short memory when making a mistake, paying close attention to each hitters tendency of how they put the ball in play, having the speed to cover the most ground when needed in order to run down high, hard hit balls, and flashing some leather and laying out for shallow line drives or bloopers. The position of center fielder is usually one of the most solid defensive players on the team while wielding a strong arm to gun down base runners trying to tag up from second to third base, third base to home plate, and in some cases depending on the way the ball is caught or caught at in the field, a runner tagging from first base to second base. They are also usually one of the fastest players on the team. Even with speed, it still takes a great heads up jump on fly balls to be in the right spot at the right time. How To Hit the Home run Ball

Grab your baseball bat, get stretched out, and warmed up because we will begin with the art of the home run ball. This of-course is not an easy task for the average Joe by any means. Big league players like Adrian Beltre certainly do make this phenomenon look easy when we all know the years of preparation and training it really takes to be a Major League Baseball player. Here are some tips on getting a head start and becoming a solid hitter at any level. First things first, making solid contact is pretty much all in how you grip the bat. The best way I’ve seen hitters experience success, as well as myself, is to align your knuckles completely with a soft to medium grip on the bat. Gripping the bat too hard will easily lead to over cutting at the ball and will result in an out the majority of the time. A great way to create more bat speed if you desire is to choke up on the bat about half an inch to a full inch. Don’t forget to keep your hands and back elbow around letter high relative to your jersey to be able to follow through on your swing. One of the most important things about hitting is the way you see the ball out of the pitcher’s hand.
