actually I'm thinking about sister shanumi never having left nigeria before coming to the vatican alone, and seeing adeyemi for the first time in thirty years, the one familiar face among a sea of stranger. the fact that she approached him - not once, but it seems on multiple occasions to try and speak to him. she visits him in his room, risking what is a fairly compromising situation if they were to be seen, to be able to speak to him. Not only that, but after the conversation doesn't go well she still tries again, only to be rejected and this time in front of the entire cafeteria.
It's out of focus, but you do actually see the entire conversation between adeyemi and shanumi take place here. I think it's interesting that she's placed standing over him, and that both times shanumi is clearly the one who walks away out of frustration - and yet from the fact that adeyemi clearly wants nothing to do with her, we can infer that she's also been the one to initiate the conversation as well. Both times, she's frustrated enough with him that she shouts at him, and storms off. I didn't realise, but in the cafeteria scene, it also looks like she's the one who throws something onto the floor in frustration.
I can't help but wonder what it was that made her so insistent to continue speaking to him. personally I think she just wanted some acknowledgement from adeyemi. he has a son he hasn't given a shit about in thirty years who, by all accounts, has grown up into a good man. I wonder if she wanted him to reach out. If she was looking for some acknowledgement of what happened. I wonder if she arrived and saw an opportunity for the closure she'd been missing, in spite of essentially being used as a pawn.
I think it sucks that we only see shanumi after she's been silenced, when she's clearly outspoken enough to demand adeyemi's attention again and again. She shouts at him both times when they argue. She pushes her point, even in spite of his rejection, in spite of the fact that she's clearly terrified of the truth being revealed - for her son's sake, it seems, more than her own.
I wonder what she did before she was uprooted and set to work in the kitchens serving meals to the college of cardinals. I wonder what work they took her away from.
