“I can’t let you do that.” 

um…. vague superhero!au? aomine’s got powers. imayoshi has administrative powers.

Aomine’s fingers dug into the back of the metal chair.

“Careful there. We didn’t budget for new office furniture this month.” Imayoshi leaned back in his stupid back-support chair, fingers steepled on the desk. He gazed at Aomine through half-lidded eyes with that stupid, smarmy little smile that made Aomine want to punch him in the face.

“My best friend -- and your best analyst -- is missing, and you’re worried about the goddamn office furniture?” 

The chair screeched in Aomine’s grasp. Imayoshi made a noise that could have been a sigh or a laugh. Aomine couldn’t tell which. He never quite could.

“I’m not worried about Agent M.”

“You should be!”

The back of the chair finally snapped. The pieces fell to the floor in a clatter. Imayoshi steepled his hands and sighed -- definitely sighed this time.

“She’s more than capable of taking care of herself. I don’t have the resources to spare at the moment.” 

Aomine’s nails dug into his palms. “You have me.”

“Don’t. We can’t --”

“I’m here and I know and I’m going and you can’t stop --”

“Aomine. Listen to me.” 

And Aomine stopped. Imayoshi’s voice had taken on that rare steeply timbre that always stopped Aomine in his tracks, always stopped his stupid heart, always -- always --

“I can’t let you do that.”

At that moment Aomine wanted more than anything to see Imayoshi’s face. To know what he was thinking. But, as usual, Imayoshi wore his glasses at the perfect angle to prevent eye contact -- the fucking asshole -- and his face was like stone. He wanted to punch Imayoshi in his fucking heart, to take his shoulders in his hands and slam his back against the wall and scream himself hoarse to get his fucking attention, to make him understand, to make him listen. 

But Aomine didn’t do any of that. He couldn’t. He looked at the carpet for a moment: dull hotel-maroon, perfect for hiding stains. Bloodstains, Aomine knew, some which were Imayoshi’s own. How could someone who could be so fucking brave at some times be such a fucking coward in others?

He looked back up at Imayoshi, whose hands were still steepled. When Aomine broke the silence, it was quiet, and through an awful lump in his throat he didn’t realize was there until he spoke. 

“Why?”

A shuddering breath from Imayoshi, which -- what in the fuck. His shoulders trembled, and he looked away from Aomine. Aomine wanted to -- he wanted to --

y’all likely resort to similar tactics to keep the peace in your case and stir the pot in his, so there might a little animosity at first, but it’d be replaced by grudging admiration. he’d respect your conviction and carefully-placed loyalties. he’d be intrigued by you and would want to know what it’s like to be someone you trust and treasure. (of course, along the way, he’d come to trust and treasure you!). he wouldn’t be fooled by your nerves and occasional blundering – in fact, he’d find it totally endearing. you’d have a lot of really great, thoughtful conversations, but would likely spend almost as much time in easy silence just sharing space (and, a lot of the time, reading). your apartment would be filled with books, but you and imayoshi would somehow continue to accumulate more all the time. one night y’all’d have a dinner party and kagami would lose his shit over your fire hazard apartment. 

(“some of us just want to watch the world burn,” imayoshi would say, smiling slightly in the way that he does when he wants to terrify someone. it works on kagami but not on you. you’d hide your laugh in your sleeve.)

he’d be really curious about your art and would want to watch you draw. this is how he would procrastinate working on his dissertation. obviously y’all would play plenty of chess. he’d teach you shogi and so you’d play plenty of that, too. you’d try to teach him how to play tennis. i have a feeling he’d be awful at it, but it’d be fun anyway!

he’d totally respect you right off the bat. bluster aside, there’s no bullshit to hyuuga, which you’d appreciate—and the feeling would be mutual. he would really dig talking history (especially military history!) with you! you’re both interested in taking concepts/events/things apart and seeing just how they work, so you’d have really great conversations about political affairs and other, like, sociocultural systems. i suspect you’d challenge each other and those conversations might get a little heated at times, but it seems like y’all might like that! he’d definitely be possessive, but not in, like, a gross, objectifying-y way. he’d be really loyal to you and would trust that the feeling’s mutual. the relationship would feel really safe and secure for both of you. he’d be so proud of you. he’d be way more than willing to watch your dance performances—he’d think it was so cool!!!! he’d love watching you dance. he’d be more than capable of handling your rants—and you’d be able to handle his, too. after talking/ranting to each other about the stressful stuff, y’all’d curl up on the sofa and watch some crime procedurals. you’d both love them. and, although hyuuga may be no kagami taiga, he, too, appreciates the value of the burger.

kiyoshi:

kiyoshi’s sense of ethics is… flexible. he really doesn’t care for things like “rules” or “laws” or “right” or “wrong.” really, he doesn’t even care that much about living or dying. he’s a big people-watcher. incidentally, he also enjoys hiking and post-modern literature.

he’s not going to lose himself to hunger just to save folks a few pints. when he does drink, he’s (..usually) careful, clean, and doesn’t take enough from any one person to leave a lasting effect. this isn’t out a sense of morality so much as a lack of interest in complication.

although some vamps can glamour, kiyoshi’s not one of them. he just happens to be very good at getting people to do what he wants them to do and making them like him all the while. 

he’s by and large a loner, though; or, he is until he meets kuroko. he takes particular interest in—a real shine to, you might even say—kuroko and offers to help him hunt his family’s killers down. of course, kuroko refuses angrily at first, but ultimately relents. apart, they’re terrifying, but together? they’re one hell of a killer team. 

kiyoshi isn’t often bothered into physical contact. he can usually talk his way into (or out of) whatever he needs to. when the situation calls for a fight, though, he’s one to have in your corner. not only is he (as always!) devastatingly clever, but he also has a neat little battle trick of literally ripping opponents apart limb-from-limb.

kuroko:

he’s a hunter! kuroko’s a little like kiyoshi in this au in that he’s not… particularly concerned… with others’ definitions of morality. he’ll stop at nothing in his quest for vengeance. he scares everyone shitless, vamp and human alike. 

kuroko’s an incredibly skilled fighter. gun? sword? dagger? stake? no weaponry? he can do it all. he really loses himself in battle. unfortunately, kuroko has a major weakness: he’s a vamp blood addict. he sees the irony but, understandably, doesn’t exactly appreciate it. (un)fortunately, the hunter federation generally turns a blind eye because of his hunting prowess.

vamp blood doesn’t come without a price. it might make kuroko temporarily invincible (or at least feel enough like it to do a lot of damage), but it’s taking its toll on his mind and body. he’s racing against time to find and destroy the vamps that killed his family.

midorima:

midorima is… many things. he made it through med school and residency to become a neurosurgeon (and a prodigy, at that), but developed a slight tremor in his right hand that almost cost him a patient. he lost both the ability and will to hide it, so he resigned. 

fortunately, his brilliant research gained the hunter federation’s attention. he was hired as a researcher and consultant. he enjoys the day-to-day minutiae of the position; he mostly has free rein in research, no one’s life literally rests in his hands, and he doesn’t have to interact with people as much. however, he doesn’t entirely trust the federation. he sticks around for the resources, the pay, and to keep an ear to the ground for the people he cares about. 

he’s also probably kuroko’s best friend, as much as they both try to deny it. they played basketball together in high school, but didn’t see each other for a few years after kuroko disappeared left (he dropped out—you know, the big massacre). they saw each other again in the atrium at the regional federation office several years later; kuroko tried to slip away, but midorima caught up with him and cared loudly yelled at him for a minutes before getting him a coffee. they’ve been in touch ever since. kuroko shows up bloody and half-dead on midorima’s doorstep at strange hours, and midorima patches him up. kuroko’s not about to go where there’ll be a record—especially for his unsanctioned hunting—and midorima knows that. when kuroko’s been in especially dire straits, mirodima has gotten him vamp blood from the lab. midorima doesn’t exactly feel good about it.

midorima is, as he is in any conceivable universe, anxious, compulsive, awkward, and reserved. he’s difficult to get to know. takao, an intrepid journalist (and shifter!), is determined to get to know him. rom-com hijinks interspersed with high intrigue and. uh. blood. ensue!

murasakibara:

he’s a chef at a human bakery/cafe by day and hired muscle (vips, clubs, etc.) by night. he was turned vamp after high school. even though he can’t really enjoy human food anymore, he’s always enjoyed cooking—and he always will, damnit.

for all that murasakibara appreciated eating as a human, he really doesn’t like drinking from people very much. yeah, he’s not exactly a people person, but he really hates it when people are afraid of him. people were intimidated enough before he turned, which was really unpleasant, but now? he could be killed. he tries to keep a low-profile. of course, this becomes impossible when someone at the federation likes his food and starts calling his bakery in for catering all the damn time… dun dun dun! (or, should i say… bun bun bun!)

himuro’s the (vamp) bartender at a club murasakibara works pretty regularly. murasakibara’s 100% oblivious to himuro’s embarrassingly obvious crush. (for awhile, at least). 

imayoshi:

imayoshi’s the multibillionaire head of an arms dealing and development company which—you guessed it—supplies the federation with weaponry. his… ethics are even more flexible than kuroko’s or kiyoshi’s. although he’s largely about the money, he’s not all about the money; he really and truly enjoys fucking with people just for the hell of it.

he does quite like kiyoshi. he’s offered kiyoshi the vp position at touou arms several times. (kiyoshi always declines. it sounds boring.) he and kiyoshi meet for coffee/drinks and peoplewatching, sometimes. imayoshi’s often frustrated by the challenge of keeping tabs on kiyoshi, especially since he partnered up with that lunatic hunter.

he’d like to hire midorima, too; he has a feeling that he’d do great work in touou’s bioengineering dept. with geneticist kise. whenever he does manage to corner midorima at the federation, though, midorima just sweats and croaks and tries to escape to the restroom. 

he stays human… for awhile. ; )

He pries you from your laptop with cold hands and gentle (if awkward) insistence. He’s right; there isn’t anything more you could do to change your odds. You’ll hear back tomorrow at noon, and it’ll be done.

You hate feeling helpless.

“You’ve worked so hard,” he says, hand squeezing yours (gently—always gently) as you walk. The road is quiet.

“Whatever happens, it’ll be alright. You’ll figure it out. You always do.” He turns to you with a smile, eyes catching in the streetlight. “I believe in you.”

You lean against the steady bulk of him.

“And I, you, but. You already knew that.”

He hums, content, and it resonates in your sternum. His cheeks pink in your periphery. You walk for another minute or so in silence, focusing on the weight and feel of his hand—on his fingers, long and cold, laced through yours.

“We turn here,” he says, stopping to face the darkened park. He pauses. 

“It’s okay,” you say, noticing his tightened mouth. “We don’t have to go in.”

He inhales almost imperceptibly, shoulders squaring. “We do,” he says, and he leads you through the park by the hand—past the dog park, past past the tree where the albino squirrel lives, past the basketball courts.

“We’re very close,” he says, stopping in front of the woods, “we just have to go through here.” He pauses, again, shrinking under the dense line of trees. Before you can speak, though, his shoulders rise and sink back. “Don’t let go, ___-san,” he said. A few months ago, it wouldn’t have registered as a question. You know better, now, though, and squeeze a little tighter as you crash through the woods.

“Is there a path…?” you ask. 

“It’s not much longer,” he says, and he’s right; the trees are thinning, and you’re stepping into a clearing. It slopes, soft with clover, down to the river below.

“Wow.”

“You like it.” He looks at you like this, sometimes, like he can’t quite believe you’re real; like he’s waiting for the other shoe to drop, or for you to disappear. It leaves you speechless every time, and this no exception. Your chest tightens.

“We should sit down,” he says, pulling a blanket from his bag. Time seems to move strangely, and you’re seated next him almost before you can blink

“There’s Leo,” he says, pulling you close, “see?” You lean against him and follow the line of his hand. 

“That’s Denebola, the tail. And there’s Regulus, the front leg, and those four are its head—what’s wrong? What did—are you alright?” The panicked thud of his great heart gallops through your shoulder-blade. Your eyes sting in the breeze; you realize you’re crying.

“I’m fine,” you say, wiping your face on your sleeve, “really. This is—this is perfect.” 

“Are you sure?” he asks, still totally alarmed—oh, Shintarou—”because, please, tell me. You can always—” he stammers and stops, breathing in deep before continuing. “I’m here. I’ll be here as long as you’ll have me.”

“That’s a long time,” you say. He smiles against your hair.

“Good.”

he loses stuff pretty frequently, so he doesn’t really ever get riled up about it. he knows he’ll find it, eventually. he’s… not exactly the best about texting back rightawayallthetime, either. it absolutely drives hyuuga (among others) up the wall. speaking of which…

hyuuga:

okay, he definitely freaks out. he tries to cover it, but he’s—bless his heart—not so great at that. he’ll rip his room or locker apart to find his phone’s been in his back pocket the whole damn time. it pisses him off that he could even lose something in the first place.

midorima:

losing things really frightens midorima; he tries so hard to keep control, so when he loses something, it scares the shit out of him. what’s next—will he forget oha asa? will he forget how to shoot? what’s next? he has to fix it before it gets worse. a part of him knows his reaction and thoughts are illogical, but that never helps. although he always looks for what he’s lost slowly and methodically, he doesn’t really calm down until a while after he’s found it. he’s extra vigilant for a while after.

kagami:

weirdly, kagami doesn’t lose stuff very much. he doesn’t really have clutter at home or even in his locker, though, so it usually doesn’t take him long to find stuff. when he does lose something, he doesn’t freak out; it’ll turn up eventually, right?

kuroko:

he gets pretty annoyed, but he keeps his cool 100%. like midorima, he looks for what he’s lost slowly and methodically until he inevitably finds it. he always does.

i think you and takao would be great together! he’d be really curious about you; he’d pick up on your passion and smarts and just want to get a better sense of who you are, especially since you don’t exactly share your opinions or any personal information very much or without provocation (whew!). he’d really respect you. he’d initiate interaction between classes or something, when he knew you wouldn’t feel pressured into having an extended conversation with him. he’d continue to initiate small conversations, and you’d probably wonder why he was so determined to talk with you. he’d never be invasive; just genuinely friendly and curious. he’d love it when you got fired up. y’all’d get around to talking games, and before you’d know it, you’d be at his place gaming a saturday away. despite y’all inevitably getting competitive, it’d be totally low-pressure and so much fun. he’d get a kick out of watching you so focused and so relaxed in his periphery; that’d be when it’d start to happen, for him, but of course he wouldn’t say anything. not for a while. when he’d confess, he’d confess in a quiet moment, maybe on the phone at night. 

he’d drag you outside on nice days, sometimes. you’d end up learning a lot about basketball through osmosis. he wouldn’t ask that you come to games, but he’d be thrilled when you did. he’d be really proud of you and proud to know you. he’d love that he gets to see parts of you that not many others do. he’d always be there when you need him.

kuroko:

b boy b boy b boy is his favorite style. he’s fucking amazing and there’s really not much he can’t do, dance-wise! he whips, he nae naes, you name it. he can do everything aomine can do, and more—and better. there are not many legs that rival his in stankiness. he doesn’t dance in front of people too much, though, especially people he doesn’t know. no one at seirin saw him dance until the night they won the winter cup! (incidentally, he and kagami tried to teach hyuuga some Moves™ that night.

[”bop with me,” says kuroko, completely deadpan. “i know you can do it, hyuuga-senpai.”

“kuroko, you have to be gentle,” says kagami. hyuuga splutters and scowls.]

kiyoshi, of course, gets it on video.)

aomine:

fun fact: aomine’s dad made him take tap lessons from age four until he started at teiko. (momoi, much to her chagrin, can’t use it as blackmail because her parents made her take it, too.) aomine’s preferred style of dance is memphis jookin, and he mostly sticks to it—except for that time at that party at imayoshi’s place the summer after his second year of college, and. well. what was even in that punch, anyway?

himuro:

fun fact: in the states, himuro was on his high school’s cheer team! (of course, he played scholastic basketball in season and street ball year round. he cheered during football and competitive cheer season.)

although turfing is his preferred style, he, like kuroko, can do pretty much anything. he has the real deal stank in his leg. minor differences aside (himuro’s stunts, kuroko’s total confidence), he and kuroko are pretty much equals. they end up bonding through dance battles in between those pick-up games we see depicted so often in official art! 

kagami:

really, he learned everything he knows from himuro and the other folks he grew up with in la. he’s a solid, good dancer, but lacks himuro’s incredible performing presence. he gets really flustered when people dance up on him.

you know, like, sure, kagami enjoys dancing; he just enjoys watching it more, whether it’s a kuroko v himuro dance battle or dance moms.

(he and himuro [and alex]  l o v e  dance moms. himuro got murasakibara into it, too, so now, when kagami visits himuro at yosen on the weekend, those three’ll usually spend an hour or two eating……. a lot………….. while crowded around himuro’s laptop)

kasamatsu:

kasamatsu doesn’t exactly advertise this, but he’s literally a roller disco king. (his parents actually met through roller disco, but that’s another story.) he genuinely really loves roller disco and skating in general, but, again, he keeps it on the DL. like, really on the DL, as in, doesn’t do any dancing or skating in front of people outside his family, anytime, ever. 

he should have never hosted that team dinner. god. he should have known he couldn’t trust kise to just go to the fucking bathroom—no, kise had to go snooping in his room until he found something embarrassing skates, and then of course he had to bring them out and show them to everyone. and, obviously, they just had to leave almost right then immediately (kasamatsu had to load the dishwasher and kise tried to help, which just slowed things down, because no one loads a dishwasher like kasamatsu) to go to the rink and yell things at kasamatsu like, “keep dancing!! like your life depends on it, kasamatsucchi!!!!!” or just laugh really loudly while also crying (and eating, in hayakawa’s case, when did he get nachos?) as macho man plays for the fourth time in a row and the dj’s head is in his hands

1. the internet/cable company i use has had an outage. hopefully, wifi on my end’ll probably be up and running within the next day or so. so no big deal! i’m not super comfortable writing, like, request responses on mobile (plus no formatting), so if you’re wondering why i haven’t responded yet, that’s it!

2. consider this: nbcoffice!au feat. kagami as the dorky receptionist, kuroko as the goofy salesperson, and midorima as. um. the assistant regional manager. (i love my son so much but i Live for kuroko pranking him and getting him all flustered) (“who put my stapler in jello?” “akASHI!”)

akashi is… a tragic regional manager because yes, he’s efficient and clever and. can be terrifying. b u t. he really just wants to be well-liked in the office, but all of his jokes are either not funny or just horribly inappropriately timed, so just. pain. terribl e.

kise works customer service. momoi, takao, and murasakibara are accountants. hyuuga and kiyoshi are salespeople. aomine keeps beans in his desk and no one really knows what he actually does. riko is the warehouse foreman; kasamatsu also works in the warehouse.

also although i’m aware there wasn’t a devilishly charming fedex guy in nbc’s show, there just has to be a devilishly charming fedex guy in this au. it’s himuro.

3. i’m considerably less attached to always sunny, but just imagine aomine, momoi, kise, and kagami running a bar together. kiyoshi is. uh. danny devito in this situation and i can’t believe that is a real thing i typed with my own fingers.

edit: however, upon further contemplation, i’ve realized that kiyoshi and danny devito in always sunny (i still don’t know his character’s name??) are both, like, totally chaotic neutral. mostly. ish.
