I got a single request to explain Red King's design, so I'm going feral! This will have notes based on AU lore (events), 'lore' (character relationships), and things I noticed in the show! (This one is for you, @daikon-dimes <3)
Let's start from the top and move down!
âRed King's horns!
Firstly, her "Proud Horns"! The color is a deep-red version of DBK's old horn color, and the shape is based on Princess Iron Fan's bull-horn hairstyle!
And then her "Transportation Horns". These are a slightly darker color than the Proud Horns and their shape is based on PIF's hair and also vaguely based on DBK's horns.
That actually brings us to...
Bangs like Mama and Red King's tiara!
Okay, horn lore:
Red King had eaten a monk and then took a killer fucking napâlike she CONKED OUTâand she woke up with big ol bull horns (magical power expression* has to go somewhere, and she's not really using it or feeling anything right then) and she was like "oh, dude, what the fuck", and then freaks out because she can't balance herself anymore
After being freaked out for a while, she demanded that the nearest bull clone get her a mirror.
She looks at herself in the mirror (she's learned how to balance at this point, good for her), she touches her horns, and she goes,
"Heh. Like Mother's hair."
And, even though she and her mother are in the middle of essentially a Cold War, she finds her mother's old tiara and puts her hair around her horns like her mom's⌠decorative hairstyle? whatever we'd call that. like the way her mom serves massive cunt 25/8âbecause she loves her mom more than anything else. (No matter how much of a raging ******* PIF is being. God, why is she like that sometimes???)
(The Eternal Fire design has sidebangs that are reminiscent of PIF's but more silky and flowy.)
Bull Fam Huadian and Bindi
The Eternal Slumber design has a huadian (a form of traditional Chinese ornamental forehead makeup, which is located between the eyebrows and sometimes on the cheeks, the temples, and the dimples) shaped like the Demon Bull family crest instead of the traditional flower petals. This is because of the idea that Red Son's "red dot" is a huadian, which I've seen floating around quite a bit, but I'm 99% sure it's a bindi.
It's in the right spot for a bindi and the wrong spot for a huadian, it looks like a bindi and doesn't look like a huadianâit's a bindi. I don't know if this is still going on (people thinking it's a huadian/saying it's a huadian/drawing it as a huadian), but it's a bindi. It's a bindi guys.
(Because of Red Son's tendency for overly expressive downturned eyebrows and the inconsistency of hand-drawn animation, it's hard to tell, but the "red dot" is seemingly intended to be slightly above and between his eyebrows, not high above on his forehead. You can tell on screenshots where it's on his forehead that it's in the wrong spot, it's actually really fun.)
Also, the people on the wiki call it a "forehead dot" and I'm so...
Anyway, in her Eternal Fire design, Red King's bindi returns! This is because her time with MK has "reignited her inferno", and she is returning to herself! With her bindi! Welcome back, pookie bear!!!
and on the note of her "reigniting her inferno", her Eternal Fire design has the same eyebrow makeup as the Red Son minifig!
Her Samadhi Ring
In the Red King AU, Red Son is allowed to keep his/her ring of Samadhi for a number of reasons. Importantly, DBK and PIF let Red Son their ring because it is their powerâRed Son was born with the Samadhi Fire, and it's an expression of their power. They are a family obsessed with power for a good while, so in the Red King AU, DBK and PIF felt it cruel to strip their only child of their power and of the remainder of it. The thought also was that, as the creator of the fire, Red Son would have the most incentive to keep the ring safe. They'd certainly never lose it, like some people.
(Fun fact, this means that DBK's nose ring is the other way around like it was in his younger years. That's just a really silly detail, but like... they match <3)
Red King's Hair Highlights (and Their Relation to Red Sonâs Magic Expression and the Samadhi Fire)
(By the way, the Eternal Slumber design has more chaotic shines because her hair isn't brushed, and the Eternal Fire design has more uniform/put-together shines because her hair is being taken care of.)
Red King has shiny hair, and that's not just to look cool. To explain why, I had to make a giant post about the LEGO Monkie Kid Magic System. I go in-depth about Red Son at the end of that post, but I'll give a TLDR here:
Red Son has a wholly unique form of expressing magic among demons, gods, dragons, descendants, reincarnations, and everything in-between (the in-between being Red Son himself, MK, Wukong, and Macaque [Red Son is half-god, half-demon; MK was intended to be a mystic monkey but got his genetics messed with; Wukong and Macaque are mystic monkeys outside of any of the 10 species, they just need to be noted here [Their magic is completely conventional, they're just crazy strong]). His body, and specifically his hair, is directly connected to his magic in a way that's different from other characters for reasons we can only speculate.
Because Red King is stronger than Red Son (and has a link to the Samadhi Fire), she has many large hair highlights! Generally, they're condensed into one or two large shapes, but smaller highlights around a large shape are also acceptable. :]
Outfits
Eternal Slumber wears zhong yi (middle clothes), a longer version of Red Son's robe from season 3, and Red Son's sandals from season 3. (I call those house shoes but the model sheet says sandals.)
Zhong yi were worn under normal clothing in Hanfu, and often worn to bed. Some posts about zhong yi: 1, 2, 3. Because Red King is... well... sleeping often but in a regal way, she wears zhong yi instead of modern sleepwear. Her robe is also longer to evoke the fact that it is a robe and she is a king.
Eternal Fire wears a sleeveless version of Red Son's coat with a gold trim. This gold trim is actually because of something on Red Son's page on the Monkie Kid Wiki! Okay, so, I'm so autistic that part of my LMK Special Interest (it's been 4 years, so this is officially a special interest) actually extends to the Wiki... and on Red Son's Wiki page, there is something so fun!!
On Red Son's Minifigureâshow comparison, the screenshot used to compare contains a coloring error! Red Son's collar is actually his skin tone! And I LOVE THAT. NOBODY TELL THEM. IF YOU ARE A WIKI EDITOR AND YOU'RE READING THIS, DON'T FIX IT!!!
I love coloring errors and I love mistakes. Not only is there the original coloring error (the mark of a human being; someone worked on this scene and they made a mistake and now we can see it and see them! It's as if their memory is saying hello, and that's why I love coloring errors), but someone else missed it, and now it has been used to represent this character's design as a whole (a SECOND human being!! Hello!! You've been here, and you didn't catch something, and now I'll always remember you were here!).
And that's why I don't want it to be fixed. I know it should be fixed, and I know the Wiki is a source of knowledge, but I also just... love people so much... and I decided to remember the coloring error by giving Red King's coat a gold trim. <3 (I was going to keep it to the collar like the coloring error, but it didn't look good.)
Other notes:
She's wearing armbands like she did when she was a baby because the Eternal Fire design is her "returning to herself."
The ballroom gloves are just sexy like that. Make MK go Looney Tunes. (And the wristbands are for the same purpose.)
If you don't know who Red King is, here are a few posts about her: the synopsis, a ficlet, and some context.
Hooo boy! My tablet pen was finally found after weeks, so I sat my ass down for two days, and drew Red King in both her King of Eternal Slumber and her King of Eternal Fire designs! I have 15 million design notes on these, but we'd be here all day if I went into detail. You'll have to ask me about it directly lmao.

I've been thinking about Red King a lot, so here's a ficlet with an accompanying art piece! (Or an art piece with an accompanying ficlet...?) It includes a lot of information about the Red King AU, so I hope you guys enjoy it and are interested in the AU!
Heads up: Red King has a funky little gender! She uses she/her pronouns and male nouns, so if you have problems recognizing which pronouns go to which characters in prose, this might be a little difficult for you to read!
2.5k words
â
Despite her quick disappearance, Red Sonâor, as the Demon Bull King learned, she was now a "Red King"âdidn't abandon her family. She'd never been one to do so; his Princess had assured him that such a thing hadn't happened in his absence. (His wife hadn't explained why their boy left in the first place, which gave him the idea that it was a tender subject. He would ask her in detail as soon as they had exacted their revenge and taken this city.)
When he desired more power, the Princess called for the bull clones to get their son and she was instantly at the Flaming Foundry with a solution. She'd brought out the blueprints for the Furnace with an uncharacteristic indifference, and explained how she'd imagined that this would be what he wanted, so years ago sheâd come up with an idea years ago.
Sheâd said something about being unable to make a prototype because she didnât have his measurements (which made no sense, why hadnât she just asked her motherâŚ), but sheâd updated the ideas whenever she could. (Her specific wording was âwoke upâ, but the Bull King had no clue what she meant by that. She couldnât have worked on it every morning if she was this disinterestedâŚ)
After that, Red King (how odd it was, to think of his son as being a king now; how much he had missed) had built the Furnace, oversaw the bull clones as they fit the armor onto the Bull King, and then explained how the armor worked. Halfway through her explanation, her eyes began to fall closed and her words slowed.
Heâd watched her nod off in confusion until his wife struck her fan against the floor and startled Red King awake. Theyâd shared a lookâtense on the Princessâs side and tired on Red Kingâsâbefore his wife sighed and his son continued, going on about finding rare items and giving pointers on where to find them in the city. Sheâd left after that, leaving him to find a shoe store on his own.
Something was happening in his family, and the Bull King was completely on the outside of it.
But, nonetheless, they continued like that: Red King would arrive when needed, providing them with what they asked for, and then depart quicklyâit was like she was leaving as soon as possible. Which, frankly, was unacceptable. It was disrespectful and rude, especially to her family! However, it didnât seem new; his wife, who was normally intolerant to any form or implication of disrespect, let their son blatantly disrespect them without a word.
In fact, she seemed almost grateful for it. She would relax her tense shoulders the second their boy had gone, let out a snide comment about how she was surprised that Red King was still awake or how it must be the little boyâs naptime under her breath, and then return to managing the dig site.
The dig site.
The dig site was the reason that Red King was called here by his mother today.
The Bull King wouldnât lie, he was getting rather impatient with the slow speed of the excavation of the power source. He could feel the power in his fingertips, but he just couldnât access it. He was so close, but he had to keep waiting! He had spent hundreds of years waiting, and he wouldnât STAND for it any longer!
His wife, understanding his plight, called their son. There was no reason to even think about calling anyone else. They needed a machine, and they needed it to be precise so as to not disrupt whatever power was down there; who else would have that done at the same speed their son would?
(Sheâd arrived only 30 minutes after they sent a bull clone to fetch her. She was never one to be late, but the Bull King was beginning to wonder if she showed up so quickly so that she could leave sooner.)
The Bull King had been on his new throne, chin in hand, brooding, when she arrived. Red King was still in that robe of hers, heâd never seen her in anything different. Not that that was particularly unusualâit was quite like his son to have an article of clothing she liked to wear oftenâbut the more she wore it, the more he began to realize it didnât look much like a royal robe, and potentially something more for lounging in at home.
She rubbed her eye with the heel of her palm before asking, âYou need me, Father?â
He grunted in affirmation, grinding his teeth for a second before he started, âI did not spend an eternity trapped under a mountain to be forced to wait longer! This is taking far too long, and I need you to speed it up.â
She tilted her head minutely to the side as she mulled over his words, and then yawned. Agitation set into his bones at her disrespect, but she quickly amended, âApologies for that, Father... Consider it done, Iâll have an excavator built by the end of tomorrow.â
She turned to leave, but the growl he let out stopped her. She turned back to him with a confused and cautious glance, âFather?â
âI wonât wait any longer, especially not for you to return. I want work to start the second youâre finished with the drafting. Youâre to stay here.â
She frowned deeply, âFatherââ
âYou are to stay here,â he shut down her protests immediately, slamming out the words âstay hereâ with utter finality.
She sighed and put her hand to her forehead as if nursing a headache, âAs you wish, Father.â
What a rude little boy his son had become. As if he was wasting her time.
â
Leaned against the wall nearest to her workspace, arms crossed, the Demon Bull Kingâs anger at his son quickly turned to concern. It was the concern that had been bubbling this entire time, amplified as he watched her workâer, try to work. He was beginning to think she truly did have a headache.
She was on her third blueprint page, frustration clear on her face; sheâd crumpled the first one and ripped the other. He watched with unease as she kept beginning to nod off, snapped herself awake, and then spent maybe ten minutes working before she was back to barely conscious. Her pencil skidded across the paper far too often as her hand went lax over and over again, leaving white marks in its wake.
She snapped herself out of another sleeping spell and sighed miserably, a hand on her forehead the only thing keeping her from faceplanting onto the workbench. It was time for him to step in.
The Demon Bull King stopped leaning and walked over to her desk, arms still crossed, âWhat is the holdup?â
She scrubbed her face before looking up at him, âI canât focus, Father.â
âClearly,â he bit out. She scowled at him in return. He sneered back at her, showing sharp teeth.
She didnât let up her own stare at his visual displeasure, so he lowered and turned his head. A threat display only meant to intimidate her and remind her to be respectful of her father, heâd never even think of hurting her. (He'd kill anyone who injured his precious boy, including himself.)
It seemed theyâd entered their first standoff, like the ones she and her mother had, but the Demon Bull King couldnât explain for the life of him why it was happening.
She sighed heavilyâlong-suffering and, again, miserableâbefore she turned back to the blueprints. After a moment's consideration, she began to speak: âI am making an excavator. Itâs construction equipment for digging, a human-made design. Iâm designing a boom, arm, bucket, and a cab on a rotating superstructureâthe undercarriage isnât necessary. I donât imagine, we wonât be moving it from the Flaming Foundry, and weâre digging in one spot.â
The Bull King raised an eyebrow. Well, at least she wasnât half-asleep anymore, and he wasnât stuck waiting. He prompted her to continue with a nod of the head and a grunt.
She put her cheek in her hand and gestured around the blueprint as she explained, her voice still mostly disinterested, âI can build an excavator easily, but we both know you donât just want an excavator, Father.â She chuckled minutely at that before continuing, âYou want something that looks nice and sleek, but also looks powerful. But⌠how do I make an excavator look powerful? The arm, boom, and bucket will all be fine, youâll like those as is, but I need to do something for the cabâŚâ
Her tone concerned him so much in a way he couldnât explain to anyone who didnât know her. She was always so talkative and excited when she was a little boy, young and excited about her workânearing manic. She would've killed to have her father's attention like this when she was getting into engineeringâŚ
Red King rubbed her eyes as she continued to prattle on about excavator cabs, noting how she normally wouldnât struggle with the cab design but nothing was coming to mind. The Demon Bull King was not in the habit of lying, as said before, so he would admit she was entirely correct about him wanting something designed personally, and he did appreciate her care. It was a form of affection, he could tell when she said it, to pay attention to his aesthetics and how he liked his machinery.
Her chin was in her hands now, both elbows on the table. Her voice was slower as she said, âI might look back at old designs I made for you, but all of those blueprints are at mineâŚâ
Now her cheeks were in her hands as her elbows slid forward slowly. Her eyes were slipping closed, and her words became just a bit slurred, âMmm, iâsh not like Iâm incapabul of designing somethinâââshe yawnedââIâm jush⌠so⌠tirâdâŚâ
Down, down, downâ
He slid a hand under her quickly before her head crashed into the workbench. She used what must be the last dregs of consciousness to bring her arms up to cross on his palm and cushion her face, and then she was dead-to-the-world asleep, snoring immediately. It might be a trick of his mind, but the Bull King was certain she was even slightly heavier in his palm.
Bewilderment overtook him as he stared at his son. Theyâd just been having a conversationâwell, sheâd been talking and heâd been listeningâand now it was as if sheâd been asleep for hours. He was stuck, half-leaned over and waiting for his son to wake, which he was certain wouldnât happen for a while.
He sat down begrudgingly, ready to stay here until she woke up so that she wouldnât bash her head against the metal workbench; this wasnât necessary, but that would be an unfortunate way for his boy to be woken up, and Red King clearly needed this sleep. He huffed in irritation as his eyes traveled the room for a second, but they soon returned to his offspring.
The Demon Bull King realized quickly that heâd been unintentionally denying himself of one of his greatest joys: admiring his child. It was perhaps foolish, but no matter what anything thought of his boy, he still loved her. For years, heâd recanted the details of her birth to anyone who would listen for years and had memorized her zodiac (inner animal, true animal, and secret animal, of course), earthly branch, yin-yang, and element. He couldnât shut up about his son.
And there was so much to admire, so much that was new. He paid close attention to her now as he cradled her in his palm: her even breaths against his skin, her thigh-length hairâwarmed by her magical power as it spread across and fell between his fingers (and it was so warm, his boy was so strong), her cute horns that she'd grown scraping against his palm as she turned her head.
His son is was still little, like all creatures are compared to him, and yet she had gotten so big. So grown.Â
And she was asleep on his hand like a baby.
â
The Demon Bull King (again, not a liar) sat there for perhaps hoursâhe had no idea how long it was, there wasnât a clockâadmiring his boy and listening to her snore. She hadnât moved an inch other than her body rising and falling with her breathing, completely in deep sleep and giving no indication that sheâd wake soon.
âMy love?â
The Bull King looked behind him to see his wife, âYes?â
âItâs been four hours, beloved. Why are you still over here?â Concern colored her voice as she came to his side, a frown on her face. (She was so pretty, even when she was frowning. Or, perhaps, especially when she was frowning. She had such an elegant frown.)
He gestured to the sleeping boy on his palm, âShe fell asleep.â
Her concern turned into annoyance quickly as she cast a callous look at their offspring, âAh. Of course she did.â
âHer inability to stay awake is⌠concerning.â
The Princess scoffed, âYes, it seems sheâs given herself narcolepsy. What could possibly be so upsetting that sheâd rather sleep for the rest of her life instead of having a conversation with her own mother, I couldnât tell you. Did you even know weâre in her territory?â
The Bull Kingâs eyebrows raised, âAre we now?â
âYes! The entire city is hers, but she refuses to take control of it!â His wife was exasperated, rolling her eyes as she continued, âSheâll barely even help her family take over her city! Sheâd rather sleep all day in that dreaded cave of hersâoh, well thatâs not true.ââshe checked her nailsââItâs a lovely cave, my love. Youâd love the architecture, she put a lot of thought into it. Itâs the last thing sheâs put thought into for the last 500 years.â
The Bull King hummed deeply, his unease mounting.
âI canât believe her sometimes! She doesnât even send letters anymore! She doesnât send letters, she comes without gifts, leaves before teaâ How disrespectful can one get?â It seemed that he was not the only one offended by his sonâs behavior, at least. But the Princess refused to comment on it in their sonâs presenceâŚ
Why?
What questions did he need to ask to get to the bottom of this? Could he just ask his wife, âWhat happened?â Would that get more answers that explained everything but the core of the issue?
âIf I didnât visit her, sheâd only wake up to eat every few months. Oh, and on that! Sheâs abandoned her diet! Not that I care about her diet, and weâve all eaten people before, but itâs just another thing that sheâs neglecting.â
âMy love,â The Bull King sat up straight and eased Red King down onto the workbench with gentle fingers, âI think itâs time for us to turn in as well.â
His wife sighed and nodded, âIt is getting late.â
Red King! Specifically, the Red King of Eternal Slumber.
Sometimes, a family falls apart. Especially after something breaks them apart. When these things happen, especially in demon families, people might... go their separate ways. Create their own territories, find some locals to Lord over, the works.
The Demon Bull King is back, through the collaboration of his wife and sonâbut once he's freed, his son takes his leave. His son, who had hair that reached his ankles (how much he had changed). His son, who had greeted him with a smile, a wave, and a "Father. It's good to see you again, finally." His son, who had bade him farewell the same way ("Father. It was good to see you again.") before he was gone in a flash of fire.
His wife sighed, "I was hoping she would stick around longer than that..."
And then both of their attentions were taken by the little thief stealing the staff from under their noses.
