Β Day 31 - If You Were in the JCA-Verse, What Would You Want to Be? Why?
This is it! The last day!
I want to explain a little bit about the question here, in case some people didn't understand what exactly the prompt meant. It's asking like would you want to be a chi wizard, a martial artist, a demon, a non-magic user, etc. Like it's supposed to be a certain type of non-magic or a magic person. But I wasnt quite sure how to word it. If someone has a better wording idea, please let me know.
I want to be a chi wizard, if not directly but something magic-related. The world of JCA is too deep for me to just be living as a regular human being with no magic knowledge whatsever. Being extremely gifted and talented in martial arts just isn't enough i against a 20 foot tall demon at your doorstep. :/ I want to have access to learn about all types of magic and magical beings so I know exactly what to do, or at least my surroundings with what's happening.
Imagine waking up in the morning preparing to start your day. You look outside, it's completely red, thunder-storminig and lightning, and you think you see something huge moving around in the sky. Imagine you go outside your house and you just see some giant shadows with red eyes and dark clothes dressed like ninjas standing outside your doorstep. You don't even know what to say or how to feel if you don't even believe in magic.
I don't even have to meet Jackie, the Chans, Uncle, etc,. BUT I would never turn that opportunity down. Especially with how Jackie moves around the world so easily, that man might fall through my roof. Literally! All I gotta do is offer some magic and/or valuable knowledge to the J-Team and Section 13 and I'm sold! I'm now apart of the team!
Also, I'd want to learn magic for more practical reasons in life, like I dunno, food or little money here and there. Nothing crazy, of course.
I think I'd want to be either a Section 13 employee, or an apprentice to Tohru in chi magic. I'd definitely want to be in the loop. Maybe I don't even need to learn magic per-say, I can just help the Chans conduct research.
Day 30 β How Would You Spend a Day with the Characters?
Here's hoping everything is free, like I don't have to pay for anything.
Starting my day, I'm going to stretch my muscle and maybe get a small workout in before I actually meet anybody. I never know what I could be walking in on or what kind of physical activity I could be doing.
Meeting the good guys, who are 90% human, is easy. The tough part is meeting the demons, if you see any and if they're nice enough to not kill you on sight.
Jackie, Jade, Uncle, and Tohru are easy. All I have to do is book me a trip to San Francisco to Uncle's Rare Finds to see them. I'm also a little interested in seeing the inside of what the shop is like.
I'll be lucky if I can get a chance to get into Section 13. If I can be cool with Jade, maybe she can sneak me in.
Now as for the villains, especially the demons and other magical figures--maybe it's a good idea if I don't. I don't mind meeting Valmont and the Dark Hand, ig.
First, I book a flight to San Francisco. Once in the city, I happen to take the bus Valmont is driving and I ask him how heβs holding up. Maybe Iβll invite him over to my hotel for some tea and a good chat later on (after locking up my valuables, of course).
Next, I get dropped off in Chinatown and walk into Uncleβs Rare Finds. It is definitely the easiest and most direct route to the Chan Clan and their misadventures. I hit it off with Jade β tell her she is a cool kid with a lot of potential, and make a small purchase to please Uncle. Jackie and I can talk history, while Tohru and I bond over our shared love of kittens.
Now Iβve made connections. If Iβm lucky, Captain Black will stop in for a visit while Iβm there. Now that Iβm in my 30βs, I find his character to be rather attractive. Jade co-conspires to hook me up on a date with Mr. studmuffin.
Once I depart from the heroes, I bump into the Enforcers. Now that they are on their way to reforming, I think theyβd be fun to hang with. We could go to an amusement park with their nephews or something. Hopefully I wonβt get hit on.
Towards the end of my trip, I unavoidably have my brush with magic. Iβm hoping itβs Shendu and Drago. They have the most personality, and who doesnβt want to see a real dragon or two? I must have bought a magic mirror or something at Uncleβs because now Iβm having an in-depth conversation with the dragons β me trying to gain knowledge of their family history, while they try to convince me to help them escape the Netherworld.
"The greatest victory is the battle not fought." - Jackie Chan, first episode. Considering Jackie's personality and mannerisms, I feel this is the best quote to describe him. I personally like this quote because sometimes not every battle needs to be fought and that's okay. Don't waste your energy fighting stuff in life that you don't need to be.
"I hate fish." - Tohru
So relatable. I'm not the biggest fan of fish either.
"We must do research." - Uncle
Whether you're in the academoic field or not, doig your research is always helpful.

That's easy. Call me the Flash. I don't even know if I'll ever need a car again as long as I hold that taliman or have it's ability.

Let me relax though, I can't go too crazy with it in public. Otherwise other people will be on to me. Next thing I'd know, the gov't would be knocking at me door asking me if what I know and threatening to hold my family hostage.

Armor of the Immortals - even thoughh it loks a little toy-like, I like the resemblance it has to something like a Power Ranger. I'm kinda disappointed there wasn't much lore dropped behind this one, especially when Jackie started using it. I would've loved to know the story behind which Immortal made it for which occasion.
Panku Box - probably one of the most confusing, yet the coolest artifacts in the show. I always get confused on how the trigrams determine which way you spin the item and how exactly it opens up. It's like a super complicated Rubix cube, and I already struggle trying to solve those. But I still think it's a cool thing
Talismans - The artifacts that kicked off the series, the MVPs in every season, the symbols of the Chinese Zodiac with immense power! Need I say more?
Hana Fuda cards - I kinda like the hana fuda cards, just because it's actually a real set (not like with oni or anything, of course). It's a Japanese set of playing cards that hold many different colorful designs on the face of each card and you can play many card games with them. The magical aspect of them showing up to give clues on which mask has which ingredient was like extra goodness.
So the wind demon chi itself isn't the issue here. The power of wind and air movement is actually really strong and really cool, like that part speaks to me.
It's the look that kinda freaks me out. I wouldn't be too thrilled about the idea of having a frog-like appearance and mannerisms, like burping out an entire wind storm with just your mouth. Good thing it's just that and not like your buttβ¦
Don't really have anything to add, because I completely agree, haha. I like Xiao Fung's toad-like appearance and the power of wind would be cool, but aesthetically it's just not for me!
Moon - the power of gravity is such an underrated ability. Makng things super light one moment, then creating a devastatin effect to make everything and everybody sink. The show didn't do enough to really demonstrate the important and strength of how much gravity can be a game changer is anything.
Water - Not only do I like the idea of looking like a demonic mermaid, I also like the fact that you can merge with the water to almost become one! Your body is a weapon in every way, shape, and form since that's what water does. The best attraction for me is the mermaid thing. At one point when I was young, I had an obsession with mermaids.
Earth - One thing I do like about this ability in the show is the way it was utilized through Dai Gui and the other users of the Earth demon chi. It didn't have to be like AtLA/LoK forms of devastation, but it was able to hold its own in terms of core strength.
Either fire (my element, being a Leo) or water. Water is so versatile, so it might take precedence, but turning into a dragon would be pretty darn awesome too.
Day 24 β Favorite Mythological Character/Creature
So many. I think my favorite thing is the fact that many of these mythological creatures aren't just something made for the sake of the show, but that they're from real mythos.
The Oni - the way the Oni look and are depicted in ancient Japanese mythos is so much different than in the show. I actually like this though, gives more of interesting takes on the Oni and how much of a threat they were in ancient times.
Shadowkhan - also get a special mention here because of how cool they are. Whether it's based off a human being or an animal
Eight Immortals - even though they never said a word in the show and were only shown through cameos, I always thought they were a really good group to adapt into the show from real Chinese mythology, from name down to the official symbol.
A lot of them are Uncle or Tohru-based, which makes sense considering how they are my favorite characters anyway.
The very first time the ''Yiu Mo Gwai Gwaai Fai Di Zao' chant was used in Project A for Astral when Jackie put his phone on speaker to put the Shadowkhan on blast. So iconic that you don't have to physically be present to banish some evil creatures.
A special mention for Jade using Uncle when he was struggling to understand modern-day technology while still being able to say his incantations over the phone in the Chan Who Knew Too Much
Uncle going all Matrix and destroying Razorkhan at Tokyo Station in Samurai Ratso.
Tso Lan using his darkness to take over the moon in Shanghai Noon. It may be a villainous moment that would've been really bad for the humans, but I thought it was cool to watch in real time. I wonder what the rest of the world thought about that moment.
That moment in The Chosen One when Jade's chi was awakened and she went crazy on the Dark Chi Warriors.
When the Oni broke out of their masks in Ninja Twilight after getting accidentally reunited, and the moment Tarakudo finally got reunited with his body.
Drago chanting that spell, taking all the Demon chi for himself after getting thrown off the Golden Gate Bridge in The Powers That Be Part I. Wish I knew what he was saying and where it came from...
Uncle and Section 13 dressing up like Shen Du's old subjects to seal him in stone in Re-Enter the Dragon. I love how much effort Uncle and an entire secret govt sector had to put in to stop that demon. They even dressed up too! And shout out to Lo Pei, since it was technically his spell Uncle was using.
AND honorable mention to the beginning of this ep when the Chans were trying to find who the noble dragon was. I thought the mysticism, animation, and overall vibe was very cool.

These are all great scenes. I think if I had to pick a single most epic magic scene, it would probably be when Uncle learned Lo Pei's spell. Along with the pageantry, it showed just how masterful Uncle was.

Hmm, I feel like maybe I donβt have one? All of them are cool, pretty powerful, and unique. Itβs hard for me to pinpoint one that I actually like the least for a reason like they were lame or something
Maybe Crabkhan? The one in the episode Half a Mask of Kung Fu where Valmont and Jade had to share them since they both had half a mask. It's not because of their look or anything about their abilities, but because their chance to shine got cut in half. Literally. So I feel we didn;t get to see them shine at their strongest like the others.
Same thing for Mantiskhan too. I just realized they got even less shine than Crab did, since the mask for it got discovered in the season finally where everything went down. I don't think there was anything to be said about which item was used to make an anti-spell for it.
Good olβ classic Ninjakhan will always be my favorite. Even though I like how all the Shadowkhan are made from different types of being and things, I just like the classicness of the ninjas. They were the first Shadowkhan we saw. I also like how the shadows and the dark kinda go with the theme that ninjas give, that theyβre sneaky and do things in the dark and such.
I like the classic Ninja-Kahn the most, but I also thought the Samurai-kahn were pretty cool. Though their concept wasn't the most impressive, I also liked how surprisingly threatening the Mini-kahn were.
Every episode has fight scenes in it, that's like 25% of the point of the show. But some of the fights stood out to me more than others. Maybe it's the characters in it, maybe it's the movesets and the stunts, maybe it's the high-level stakes happening at that moment. I don't exactly know the answer, only that I really am entertained by all the butt-kicking action in the show.
Edit: I forgot to finish this, so while the day is technically not over, I want to finish what I started and add on. So I may reblog this with extra additions I think of.
Tohru, Shadowkhan v Jackie - The Dark Hand
The first big fight scene of the show. The animation was like a chef's kiss too, from the way the Shadowkhan started advancing on Jackie to Jackie's quick thinking as he either threw a punch or dodged. And the jump flip on the balcony with the shield? So awesome
Shen Du v Jackie (ft Jade) - Day of the Dragon
I feel this was a truly deserved fight to end off the season. Even though Jackie was way under his league because he had to rely on Uncle's magic and sntaching the talismans out of Shen Du to use to his advantage, I admired Jackie's tenacity to still give it his all to defend the world. You can never knock Chan for trying.
Jackie v Dai Gui - Armor of the Gods
The Armor of the Gods wear was such an underrated suit, so sad it only had one appearance and was never mentioned again. Especially with the way Jackie used it to hold off against Dai Gui!
Jackie v Razorkhan - Samurai Ratso
I liked how intense the scene was for Jackie to have to fight off all the Shadowkhan in the car production line
Paco v El Toro - Fright Night Fight
Paco with a mask on was very swift. I enjoyed him calling out all the moves right before actually landing the blows, like Hak Fu does. I also liked the emotional backdrop of everything, like watching Paco's internal struggle with taking off the mask while the mask itself is telling him not to.
Future!Jade v Drago - J2
The speed of both Jade and Drago during this fight was insane. I like to so much because in these few seconds, we truly see how much Jade has grown from being just a kid to being a full-fledge ass-kicking adult. Even though Drago got the best of her, you could see she was truly going all-out to take him down.
Jackie vs Valmont in The Rock. Jackie vs Shendu in Day of the Dragon. Jackie vs Valmont/Shendu in And He Does His Own Stunts (How come everyone can do that?!). Jackie vs The Dark Chi Warrior Enforcers in The Powers Unleashed (it was the first time they were actually badass). Adult Jade vs Drago in J2: Rise of the Dragons. Jackie vs Drago in The Demon Beneath My Wings.

Hmm... I actually want to see more of Chi Master Fong, or what Uncle's training was like back in the day? How was Uncle's journey in being a chi wizard? I actually liked listening to Uncle's backstory every once in a while when it came around.
More episodes for season 4, maybe some fillers related to the arc.
Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I'd actually like to see more of Jade's parents. Like since the J-Team visited them in Hong Kong, they decide to come to America to see her and all hell breaks loose!
I'm curious to see more ideas of Captain Black working to expand Section 13 to develop stronger methods on taking on magic.
I'd add in Mama Tohru more to season 4. It'd be good for her to at least be a prominent player one time, especially because she's Japanese AND she was the one who told Tohru about tales of the Oni. Given that she didn't have a complete mental breakdown at the sight of the Dark Chi Warriors, being invisible, her son helping out Santa, etc., this season could've been a key moment for her.
You're telling me Uncle was struggling with Japanese and Tohru wouldn't have secretly went behind Uncle's back to ask his mom for help, much to Uncle's chagrin? Despite them near hating each other, they actually work really well with each other when they're focusing on the same goals. So if the goal was to find an Oni mask, take down Ratso and the Razorkhan, or even just to get more knowledge of the Oni and Tarakudo legends, she's literally your guide.
Change:
All of the Monkey King episodes would be more formulated towards the Journey of the West tale and/or characters. I'd change his introduction episode to explain his origins and WHY he was reduced to a puppet. Like either MK became too much of a menace, MK became corrupted by dark chi and this was Buddha's last resort to restrain him. There's a lot of opportunity here.
EVEN BETTER: He isn't the real Sun Wukong, but the Six-Eared Macaque, who's by Chinese legend SW's evil twin, whose more of a demon who wants to take the real SW's place and wreak havoc everywhere. This would prompt the real SW, along with Tang Monk Tang, Zhu the Pig, Sha the Sand, and the Dragon Horse to show up, team up with the Chans, and everyone saves the day.
The ending of the first J2. A part of me feels like I'd maybe have Drago escape from being captured, another part of me would have Drago be seen somewhere inbetween J2's ending and Ninja Twilight.
Season 4's finale. I'd make it into a 2-parter, the first episode where the last mask is discovered, someone puts it on, the Shadowkhan come out, you know the drill. By this episode's end, the mask is reclaimed by the Chans and saved in S.13 with the rest of the masks. At that point, then the masks break, the souls of the Oni generals come out. Then the following episode is wrapping stuff up while Tarakudo gets stronger since he's already in his full body form.
(also, Shen Du and Drago are IN SECTION 13 while that takeover was happening. So throw them in the mix a bit)
The show got me more interested in Chinese mythology, so I'd throw in more episodes, filler or not, about Lo Pei and the Eight Immortals.
Hmm, is it crazy if I'd say I'd change the Agent Tag episode and remake it into a more Rush Hour-based episode? The first 2 movies had already been out before the show premiered and were already super popular at this time. Would've been a great episode and an addition to the J-Team (ofc you make it for a fam-friendly audience)
Capt. Black pairs Jackie up with another agent (like a female black agent named Carter) to take down a magical threat. They both don't really like each other like that at first, but they learn later on that they're actually more similar and start getting along. Maybe Jade tags along in the mission and somehow complicates things, so now Jackie and Carter really gotta get down to stop the bad guys, save the day and the world, and now they're cool. Bonus if Carter gets initiated into the J-Team for her bravery and knowledge of magic.
J2 Revisited? Don't have much ideas for them.
Change Drago's introduction to maybe season 3's finale
Maybe tweaking a bit of Attack of the J-Clones, where instead Chang and Wong team up to destroy the J-Team and their reputation by manufactoring the J-Clones to do crimes. @artbyoddity mentioned it just recently and it gave me an idea to expand on
A lot of good suggestions here. In addition to adding some (slightly) darker elements to the show, I would have liked to have seen some more emotionally charged moments. Like when Jackie was enraged at Valmont's callous near-murder and mocking of Captain Black, or the devastation the Chans all felt when Jade got accidentally sucked into the nether world. I like to feel emotionally connected to the characters. More female characters is a given, I've mentioned (ranted about) it a few times. Drago had a lot of potential to be a more complex character for sure, so some backstory or more episodes focusing on his relationship with his father would have been welcome.
Changes? Hmm. Ah yes. I hate the way they drew the J-tots. On a more serious note, I wish they had explained Jimmy's transition to Iso better. I watched the episode and presumed that there was more to the story. Maybe Jimmy had a bad influence that was stronger than Tohru's (and Jade's) good influence. Maybe he had a rough home life. Maybe he accidentally got corrupted by dark chi while researching an artifact. Many fans watch the episode and are either confused or ticked off at Jimmy. As someone who went through many years of child-hood bullying, let me tell you, it would take something MUCH deeper to cause Jimmy to turn against his only friends. When you finally find real friends, you hold them close. So yeah, I really think they could have done a better job at least HINTING at something deeper going on with Jimmy. Because of the lack of explanation, it really gets lost on fans that by the end of the episode, Jimmy actually finds inner strength and renounces his dark side. I think this moment could also have been highlighted better.
The Dog - I've never been a fan of being immortal, especially since people mistakenly correspond immortality to being healthy. For me, being immortal doesn't mean much to me if you're beat up so bad you're in a coma forever.
Monkey - I'm not the most fond of animals, so I'm not don't care as much about animal shape-shifting.
I agree about the immortality granted by The Dog. As Finn illustrated, immortality can still hurt. The Sheep could also leave you extremely vulnerable. The Tiger isn't very useful though, unless your using it for it's true purpose: enabling the user to use multiple talismans at once without consequences. Honestly though, I think the one I would use the least would be Rat.

Dragon - the power of combustion is cool. I can be a fire bender!
Rooster - it'd be cool to fly, or even to be able to float and make other things float.
Sheep - this one is underrated to me, because it can be really useful if you want to spy on someone without anyone knowing you're there. The only downside with this is that you have to keep your body in a safe place so nothing physically happens to you.
Monkey Talisman for me. I'm probably somewhat partial, as it is my zodiac sign. I also love animals though, especially those of the feline variety. I would probably be like Tohru and turn anything unpleasant into cute kitties.
I think there are some hidden uses for the talisman. You could probably use it to help with the conservation of endangered species, for instance. There does seem to be some inconstancy in the depth of the transformations though, so this could create some potential problems (same thing if you tried to bring back an endangered species). Sometimes a transformed inanimate object would literally take on the life of the animal, whereas other times the object would just take on the shape of the animal. Sometimes transformed people (or humanoids) behaved like normal animals, whereas other times they maintained their human awareness. Transformed animals also seemed confused.
I wonder if same-species transformations would be more successful? Or would a colony of stray cats transformed into tigers still come running at the sound of a can-opener?
Day 16 β Any Criticisms, Dislikes About the Show?
cracks knuckles Okay, let's get to it. If you've been following me for some time on this blog, I'm sure you will know some of what I'm going to say since I've discussed it on here before.
There aren't as many prominent women/female characters around. Jade and Viper seem to make up like a majority of the girls and women on the main protagonist's side. Both Jade's mother and Tohru's mother only go by those terms in the show, they don't actually have real first names to go by. Simone, Abila, Xu Lin are other girl characters from some of the fillers. Then Bai Tza, Po Kong, Vanessa Barone are some of the more prominent female antagonists I can recall off the top of my head. I wish there were more female characters, especially for the villains. More female wizards/witches, more female demons, more female villains.
The shots of the Eight Immortals when they defeated the Demon Sorcerers in The J-Team are mostly incorrect. The only one I believe that looks to be right is the Hung Guolao (the old guy w/ the scroll wearing red and yellow) with Po Kong. All the other Immortals don't have the correct pairing. It's so confusing and it's kind of a nitpick of mine, since I now am able to recognize who's who since they are based off real Chinese mythological figures. Some of them are even holding their official symbols too, like Lu Dongbin holding the sword for Xiao Fung, even though the Immortal __ who defeated him is literally holding a fan for someone else.
I remember having a conversation with a Chinese fan who was able to explain to me how some Chinese cultural aspects of the show weren't correct, like the Yin/Yang simplification or Monkey King's flanderization were off. Sometimes, even names like Xiao Fung, Tchang Zu, Shen Du's treasure from Qin Shu Huang was mispronounced. The last bit may be more of a nitpick tho, but still.
I didn't like how seasons 3 and 5 felt like almost exact repeats of seasons 1 and 2, where the focus went from finding the talismans to finding the talisman-powered animals and from finding the DS portals to finding the DS chi. I would've liked the seasons more if extra information was added to what we knew already, which could raise the stakes of the seasons and/or make it worth engaging with. That's what made season 4 special. Like yes, we have seen the Shadowkhan so many times before, but did we know they have their own origin outside of just being shadow henchmen? Give us something more than just the animals having the talisman abilities or that a piece of the Demon Sorcerers' chis are left behind with the Immortal who defeated them. What about the Immortals themselves, did they know about this?
Season 4 was too short for comfort. There should have been some "fillers" where they're not quite so, but they're still important to the seasonal arc, ie. Queen of the Shadowkhan or Warrior Incarnate. Call me an instigator, but I want to see the Oni jumping Shen Du while he was in Section 13. Maybe Drago too, idk.
All the season finales should've been a two-parter type of thing, but Ninja Twilight deserved that the most since I feel the pacing of the episode was a bit fast for my liking. In the beginning of the episode, the last mask gets discovered and by the episode's end (which is also the season finale), everything gets wrapped up. How? There's no way you guys wrapped up the last Oni mask, a near world takeover, and wrapped up Tarakudo within 24 hours. We didn't even get to go over the last mask or any other details of the Oni, Shadowkhan, or anything.
I feel the show should've given some background for Jackie and maybe some development for him too. He was somewhat stagnant through the show. I guess a part of me is sort of okay with this, since Jackie's not usurping time away from the other characters. It's easier to expand on others like Jade, Tohru, Uncle since they are fictionally based on people JC knows in real life. But I feel outside of the action department, Jackie didn't have as many personal growth moments as I would've liked. Like most, if not, all of the protagonists had villainous/villain-like moments. Captain Black had a mask, Viper was a thief, Paco had an Oni mask, Jade had several, Uncle was a chi vampire, Tohru was a criminal. The deepest Jackie has gone to the dark side was his Yin self and him being briefly possesed by Shen Du, which doesn't count because that's a half of his real self. Give me some villainous Jackie!
Season 5's intro was criminally short since they used the outro song for also the intro. Like why?
Drago was introduced to the show a bit late. It almost feels like he was thrown in as a last-minute idea, which I feel kinda missed the mark on really making himself known in the show. Considering he is Shen Du's son and is a nephew to the other Demon Sorcerers and he came from the future, there are too many plotholes surrounding him and his being. Why wasn't he considered to be the noble dragon in season 3's finale? Where's Drago's mother? How old is he? Like if the Future!Jade left Drago in the past, where is that current Drago?
Seasons 4 and 5 deserved more episodes, maybe 16 or 17. I feel like what made season 1 shine the most is that adding those 3 out-of-place "fillers", there was more room to focus on the main season's plot while still having it's own episodal thing. I wouldn't loved that for the last 2 seasons as well, the villains deserved more screentime.
Much of the original poster's critiques match my own. I think I may have even mentioned some of them briefly in earlier prompts (like wishing for a more developed relationship and backstory between Shendu and Drago).
The biggest gripe for me is the lack of female characters for sure. There really isn't any valid excuse for it. Even if the target audience was young boys, the creators must have realized that some girls would be drawn in by the fantasy, or they would have given Jackie a nephew instead of a niece. Considering how many delightful male characters are in the series, they really missed out on an opportunity to create some memorable heroines.
Seriously, am I supposed to believe that Jade is the first and only female agent at Section 13?
