Decorative Brushes: Set 04 — Tiny Text (111 total)

Adobe Photoshop CS6 .abr file + .jpg image to load the brushes manually if needed. Brushes are in a variety of sizes, from 21-768px, with most around 50-200px.

NOTE: The “image pack” is actually one large .jpg with all the individual brushes on it, as I figured it was easier to see everything at a glance and select what you want than to shuffle through 111 pictures. (If anyone doesn’t know how to pick/define individual brushes from a combined image, let me know and I’ll put up a quick tut or something!)

It’s been promised for a while, but I’ve changed up how I edit my gifs so much that it’s been hard to create. However I finally sucked it up and did it! If you do not know how to make gifs, go to my basic gif making tutorial here

Just like the first gif tutorial, this requires a basic understanding of photoshop, as I won’t explain where things are located most of the time. But if you’re a newbie a quick google search will usually do.

Now I’m going to show you load of different tools that can be used to create all sorts of gifs.

A REALLY important tip: Try to get the best quality download you can when making gifs. DVD rips don’t tend to take the beating of gif editing as well as blurays do. 

First I’m going to start out with a gif that is totally unedited of my baby Hermione/Emma Watson

defiantly NOT acceptable to post on tumblr right? But never fear~ photoshop is here!

Brightness

First off, it’s hella dark. To begin, I’ll click on Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Brightness/Contrast. Bump them both up to the right until you like what you see. It’ll be different for every gif, but for this one I’ve used +138 brightness and +57 contrast.

Next I’ve played around with Levels ( Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels) and Curves (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves) to make it look a bit better. There’s no rhyme or reason to these tools really. Just play with them. 

Now that I’ve got it brighter it already looks a lot better.

Colors~*~

Next I’ll start playing around with colors. First I’m gonna go to (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Color Balance). This is seriously the best tool when you want to have good colors in a gif. I think using reds and magenta look really great, especially when your original gif can look washed out.

For this one I used +71 -3 +60-something.

Quite a change, huh? 

To make some of the colors stand out more, go to (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Color). This tool will bring out which ever colors you want it too.

I used red and yellow to make the gif a bit warmer (I like warm toned gifs as you can tell) 

Gradients

Using gradient overlays gives gifs a really nice look to them. It’s subtle, but it works. First make a new layer and click the gradient tool, which is a square with a black to white gradient in it in the middle of your toolbar, for you photoshop newbies. Make sure you have black as your foreground color. Select the gradient that goes foreground color to transparent (PS newbies: the one that goes from black to grey and white squares)

Drag the gradient up from the bottom, but don’t go far.

After that, change the layer to Overlay (Newbies: you’ll find this in the layer square on the left. Where it says ‘normal’ change it to 'Overlay’

Then push down the opacity as desired (for this it’s gonna be around 65 percent)

Black overlays tend to not only make the gif look nicer, but makes the gif size smaller too. 

Sometimes having a gradient on the top looks good as well, but for this one not so much.

And I’m pretty much done with this gif! Not gonna lie, I played around a bit more with it. Added another Cruves and Color Balance that changed it a little bit, as well as added a white color overlay in the middle.

For colored gifs, that’s the basic run down and that’s really how I make my gifs. There’s no real secret to it, just a lot of colors and buttons to push and that’s it. It’s the funnest part, too.

But if you want to spice up your black and white gifs and play with some Channel Mixers, keep on keepin on.

Black and White

First to make your gif black and white, go to Layer > Adjustment Layer > Black & White. Even in Black and White, I’d still add all the bells and whistles that you would for a color gif under the black and white layer. It makes the gif really pop. 

If you’ve ever wondered how people get those cool gifs where it’s just one or two colors, you need to be introduced to channel mixers my friend

Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Channel Mixers

I hate to break it to you, but this really is another one of those tools that you just fool around with until you like it. You can get really unique looking gifs using Channel Mixers. You can even layer them over each other. 

I hope I’ve covered everything well! Now all my gif secrets are out in the open. I feel so naked. :c

Making a gif/edit is honestly not that hard and takes about 5 minutes, well, depending on the scene, how long you’ve been doing this and how you color but the steps are:

Getting your screencaps.

Importing them into Photoshop.

Cropping and putting them into the correct dimensions for tumblr.

Sharpening.

Color.

Save.

Six pretty easy steps. But this is not a tutorial post, this is a resource post.

New Dimensions for tumblr:

10 gifs: 268x145

9 gifs: 177x177/178x178/177x177

8 gifs: 268x160

6 gifs: 268x186-200 (whichever you prefer)

4 gifs (side by side): 268x268

4+ gifs: 540x220

2 gifs (side by side): 268x300

2/3 gifs: 540x240 

The width is the most important, that stays the same but the height can be different as long as the gif size is under 3MB

this is a really good tag too see different sizes

Sharpening for gifs: (these are the best ones)

This is probably the hardest part finding a good download, its a trial, I went through a couple before I found a good one (I forgot where I got it sorry.)

Photoshop CS5 is probably the best one for making gifs, makes them look smoother. 

Some tips:

Never use google to find images especially those found in pinterest, weheartit or other sites like that. Use the ones above or from official sites.

Never stretch an image more than it’s original size. If you already sized it down to 268px but now want it to be 540px, you need to just start over cause stretching it would make it really pixelated and gifs/edit that have pixels are ugly. 

Always download 1080p, 720p is fine but try to find 1080p. Never 480p. Never, just love yourself.

When it comes to sharpening gifs, keep it simple. If you do use gaussian blur, don’t make it too blurry. Simpler is better but again, everyone is different so its not my place to tell you what to do. *You know you oversharpen your gif when you get that weird line around an object.*

Always use the right dimensions! Only use widths of 268px or 540px, unless you are making 3 gifs side by side then its 177 x 178 x 177. If you are makings gifs that are side by side, example, keep it 268px never anything smaller or higher, it makes the gifs blurry.

The only time it’s okay to use a bigger size is when you make a graphic, infographic, or art. Never for gifs or edits.

A clear sign that someone is stealing/recoloring gifs is if the gifs in the post are all different sizes from each other and/or have different sharpening.

For text, keep the font size between 10.3-11px. The best front to use is Arial Rounded MT Bold with a stroke of 1px and if needed, a drop shadow at 50%, angle 30, distance 3, spread 0, and size 5. You can download my font psd here if you want.

INTRODUCING: MAGNIFICENT CENTURY SCREENCAP RESOURCE

As something to celebrate passing the 300 follower milestone awhile back, I have started a Magnificent Century screencap gallery. These may be used for personal reference and your own graphic editing projects.

All files are HD (1920x1080), sorted, and logofree – because network logos have been batch-removed digitally, artefacts may be visible on some images, but even these are for the most part inconspicuous. Likes and reblogs are highly-appreciated and encourage the continuation of this project.

I have uploaded the first six episodes of the first season. Other episodes, as well as stills, will be added gradually; a Kösem gallery is also forthcoming, and will probably take precedence once the series begins.
