Released in 1976, the KORG 770 was a monophonic synthesizer whose limitations in functionality and sound design were offset by its distinctive design and highly individual sound, earning it a lasting reputation among vintage synth enthusiasts. Its retro yet striking ring modulator is especially notable, capable of producing bizarre and otherworldly tones, while the external input allows for a wide range of experimental sound processing. Bass, string, and lead sounds are all surprisingly usable, and features such as fast envelopes, auto-bend, and LFO retriggering were considered uncommonly advanced for the time. Although undeniably limited compared to later synthesizers, those very imperfections are part of what gives the KORG 770 its enduring charm.
