Restless King

“Sounds like I’ve company for lunch and a nap.” he hums happily, helping him set the table between them. “Hopefully he’s the sense enough in him to get something to eat and drink while the group of them all trains together; after all he’s the one that complains about not having a proper balance in diet for body building.” 

There. The table’s set, and Regis has a veritable waffle tower laden with fresh fruits. As for himself: prosciutto sandwich with greens, a cup of brewed coffee with a waiting pot for refill. Perfect. Antoine sits down.

“All this focus on fitness. I hope he doesn’t neglect his further education. If he becomes a thorough meathead, I don’t know what to do. I’ll throw Clarus out of the window, I suppose.”

Regis laughs at that. “I’ll help you. If he becomes a meathead he’ll become unbearable!” Sitting down, he waits for Antoine to join him before he allows himself to tuck into the meal; perhaps the only person he would wait to have join him before diving in.

When he realizes it’s being reported on his own home, Regis quiets, He understands the others view. “you needn’t read this one aloud, Ulrich.” he exhales, though Nyx reads on. 

“Are you alright?”

      He had to give himself a moment. Nyx could feel his body shaking but also feel a numbness spread through out his body. There was a pause before he finally answered the King. “Y-yeah…” He finally says letting out a sigh. Nyx placed the papers slowly to the side. In the pit of his stomach felt strange, as if a battle was going on in which left the male silent. As he sat there struggling, he finally snatched up the next report. “Almost done…” He finally says as he begins to read another report on how the king had left with the lone survivor of the house. It felt strange reading this part out loud. When a few hours back his family was still alive.

“Stop.” He waves his hand. “I hadn’t expected that report to come in until tomorrow... Usually the reports are a day or so behind when we are on the road, though I suppose it makes sense considering this would need to have been recorded for a campaign marker later...” he exhales. “I am sorry, Nyx. I wish I could say that this did not happen as often as it seems to feel; as it just happened to you- to your family- to the families here.”

He pauses some moments before he speaks again. 

“It’s unfair of me to have asked you to join me, but when there is a war on the horizon, fairness is a nicety that we can little afford. I’m thankful and grateful to you, and all of those that join us, in the movement against the Nifs to take back lands lost. I’ll understand if you need time to recover and grieve, but I’m afraid that too, time, isn’t an afforded luxury... not until we return behind the walls of Lucis and at the very least, turn back and away from lands they reach their filthy gloves to.”

The absence of fun is what Regis banked on for those nights he or others couldn’t sleep. He’s eating dessert by the time Nyx stops reading, his eyes shifting up to watch Nyxs eyes, gauging his emotions. 

“I am still awake- speak up, then.” he smiles softly. “I’m listening, still.” 

     “R-right…” He nods and takes a breathe as he reads on. It was painful at first but then his voice become robotic. Almost as if someone else was reading it. That this happened to someone else. Once he pushed passed that report. He began to finish the rest of the reports of the day. Then let out a weak sigh as he placed them in the right spots.

     “Right.” He says as paper work didn’t sound all that fun but he probably had to get used to it. Since he was in the service of the King now. Nyx headed on over to where the papers were and began doing his job. At first as he begins to read, it was boring but soon began to read the reports in what happened in different areas. It was like finding out the after math and before everything had gone down. Also read the report on his family but then he stopped. Nyx placed down the paper looking up at the King with eyes wide for a moment.

      He couldn’t help but look in awe at the tattoo. Since hadn’t even gotten his first one yet and now he wanted one. Everyone around them seemed in a lighter moon but not Nyx. Still it was hard to shake off the feelings of sorrow that he had just witnessed. The invite though had surprised his, brows raising. King Regis wasn’t wrong about that. Nyx nodded and had given the rest of the sandwich to the man next to him before getting up. His mouth felt a little bit dry as he followed him to his tent. 

“…Thanks, your majesty.” He said finally as they were finally out of ear shot with everyone else. Regis probably knew that sleep was probably the last thing on his mind, along with company with a group of people he had just met today. 

“Alright. Sometimes that man does overwork, and then complain when he gets hungry,” Antoine muses. “I could sit around for lunch, I think,” he continues. “And then sneak a power nap before I work for the afternoon.”
