Tales of a Wraven

Kept the colors simple with just some flat tones. Wasn’t in the mood for any advanced blending or painting. 

I hate being sick...

Inks completed. Still playing with dynamic line widths and trying to figure out how extreme of lines I want to use/are appropriate for the depth I’m trying to communicate. Colors next?

Damn, it’s been a while. After moving across the country and playing lots of Pathfinder and DotA2, I realized that my art had suffered in the past few months. I’d do minor sketches on paper that’d I’d ink for practice, but I hadn’t done a full work to complete colors on my tablet in a long time. I hadn’t been giving it the time and focus that I used to (though Pathfinder and DotA2 are really fun). 

Anyway, this started as a sketch just to get back in the swing of things, and I liked it enough to take it to inks and colors. Tried some different tools for the coloring, and I like the result. Not a whole lot of planning went into this one, so the design is pretty rushed. Also I had fun comparing this to some old drawings I found from three years ago which is when I decided to take my art seriously. I hope to have a similar experience looking back on this work in three years.

After a bit of delay, here is afluffygoomba’s Dragonborn Paladin Revan Nalasar. I took this one on as a bit of a challenge, since heavy armor and anthropomorphic characters are two things I have little practice in drawing. I spent a lot of time just learning to draw a passable dragon face. I hope the design is well appreciated, and despite its challenge, I enjoyed working on this. 

A very quick piece of Log Horizon’s Akatsuki I did today. This started out as a sketch practice since I’m still trying to figure out the best way to sketch on my tablet (I don’t quite feel as comfortable sketching on it like I do on paper. It might simply be I still haven’t used it enough to reach that point of familiarity with it yet). Anyhow, the sketch turned out well enough I decided to quickly throw some heavier lines over it (obviously this is not the original sketch layer). I might return to this at a future date to actually ink it and maybe color it. 

Got another DnD/PFRPG character commission here to show. This time, it’s Foundgeek’s tattoo-adorned wood elf sorcerer Mordaeon Lassiter. I hope the design is to your liking, Foundgeek. Sorry not sorry about the pun, but with electric/storm/shock magic it was too easy.

Note that I have only watched 1-2 episodes of each of these, so these really are first impressions.

In no particular order:

Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju (Crunchyroll.com): Really glad to a have a show not about supernatural abilities/monsters/giant robots for once. Really curious to see where this slice of life drama goes.

BBK/BRNK (Crunchyroll.com): A show about supernatural abilities and giant robots. On the fence about this one, but episode 1 was intriguing. 

GATE Season 2 (Crunchyroll.com): Glad the gang is back. I quite enjoyed the first season. However, at times I feel the art is a bit too moe for the content. I mean it’s not that moe, but sometimes I feel there is disjoint between the material and the art. 

Prince of Stride: Alternative (Daisuki.net): Poor Shogi-club dude, lol. Anyway, I’m glad that there’s no shortage of random sports anime.

So here is thrbellevent’s character, Thia (née Shyla) Galanodel, a half-elf ranger. I hope you like the design! I reworked her armor a couple of times in the process of designing her. I haven’t done a work on this scale in a while (mostly just sketching lately), so admittedly this took longer than it should have since I had to rediscover how to color again.

First off, my apologizes for the complete absence of content from this blog in the past couple of months. My life got very busy and despite how much I enjoy posting here, maintaining regular content for this blog was not very high on the list of priorities. I can’t exactly promise frequent content in the near future either; however, I have a backlog of GMing tidbits, home-brew content, and funny Pathfinder adventure anecdotes I may post. 

For those of you who requested DnD/Pathfinder character art, my apologies as I obviously didn’t get around to most of them. I had less time than I thought I would. However, I’ve been working on one lately and hope to post it later this week. Honestly, I quite enjoy drawing your characters and would love to do more of these. So if you’d like to see your character drawn by me, please go ahead and submit a full description (visual/equipment/personality) to me through Tumblr’s messaging feature. Again, no promises that I’ll actually do it, especially if I receive more than I can handle, but your character prompts are fun to work on. Since it’s been so long, please resubmit your character description if you had previously submitted one just so I know that you are still interested. Thank you everyone for trusting me with your characters. 

For those who originally followed me for anime content/screen captures, know that I still watch a fair amount (e.g. currently trying to catch up on Durarara, and One Punch Man was hilarious last season). However, I mostly watch on my phone on the TV which is inconvenient for getting screenshots up on Tumblr. I will post stuff like that if the opportunity arises, but as you probably noticed, that isn’t my main content anymore. 

Anyway, thank you for sticking around all these months. I really appreciate your interest in my content and will make a better effort to keep this blog moving. 

PC: “I throw pocket sand in his face.”

Me (GM): “What?”

PC: “Yeah, I throw pocket sand. I have it written down in my inventory. See? Pocket sand.” [holds up character sheet and points to his equipment listing]

Also, one party member went off by himself at a certain point while everyone else discovered an important clue. They decided to lie to that one PC about what they found for the majority of the session. The guy was a good sport about it (he knew the truth, but role-played his character as if he believed them); it led to some really funny exchanges.  

We only got about two thirds though the adventure before we called it a night at 1 am. Thus, I can’t post my adventure notes yet since I don’t want to post spoilers for them. It’s a pirate themed mystery. This first part was mostly intrigue as they had to solve what happened to the captain of the ship they arrived on, so we actually went 5 hours without a single combat encounter (there was a legitimate poker game in the middle of that though, the ranger lost all his money. lol). However, it should escalate pretty quickly at the next meeting, and I have high hopes for this denouement. Stay tuned to my blog. I hope to have more content about all this soon.

So graduate school has really kept me busy this past month, and it doesn’t look to ease up any bit. This sadly has drastically limited the amount of time I have to draw and post. If you have a commission pending, I’ll finish when I can, but I am no longer taking new commissions. Also, you’ve probably noticed that I haven’t done A Wraven’s Wanderings in a while. I’ve got a lot going on.

The good news is, though, that I’ve got a PFRPG group to GM for again that’ll be starting up in a week or two, so I’ll have to content from that to post soon. I’m really excited about this first adventure that I’ve started drafting. It’s nice to have a group to write for again.
