“S. Carter, ghostwriter; and for the right price I can even make YO shit tighter!”
On the anniversary of the release of Dr. Dre’s Chronic 2001, let’s take a moment to remember that it was Brooklyn’s own Jay-Z who penned the album’s first single, the 4x Multi-Platinum “Still D.R.E."
At the time Jigga was coming off selling five million copies of his third studio album Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life, and had topped the Billboard Hot 100 alongside Mariah Carey on their hit single "Heartbreaker.” On the other hand, the West Coast producer wasn’t in a great place musically and needed 2001 to come out the gate hard.
So how did Hov come to write “Still D.R.E.”? At a listening session with Dre and Jimmy Iovine in Los Angeles, Steve Stoute heard Iovine tell Dre that he needed to lead the album off with a hit single. The Commissioner headed back to New York City with a beat CD, and played the five Dre beats for the King of New York. Jay would then write the entire track off the top, including Snoop Dogg’s contributions.
In an interview with Strong Arm Steady on GGN News in July 2012, Snoop had this to say about S. Carter the Ghostwriter: “[Ghostwriting] is about who can project the best for the artist that they’re writing for. [Jay] wrote all of that. When we was trying to write D.R.E., we all took a shot at it, but we all couldn’t come up with nothing as dope as Jay-Z. So we had to take a backseat and say ‘Okay, his shit is doper than everybody else’s [who had] done wrote something. So, he’s the winner, we gonna do what he say. He wrote it in the same vein as if we wrote it, because he understood what he was writing for. He took and embodied the whole situation as far as writing for Dr. Dre. So we couldn’t do nothing but take a backseat and acknowledge that, and say 'You know what? You a bad motherfucker!’ We didn’t dispute that.”
Yes sir
If you get tired, learn to rest, not to quit.

We often feel like giving up because it’s too hard or too tiring. Just take a break, maybe a small break, or a long break. Rest, get motivated again, do what you need to do so that you can come back and keep working hard. Make yourself proud.
